BSNL gears up for global 3G, prepaid and GPRS roaming

9 Oct, 2008, 1623 hrs IST, PTI

NEW DELHI: Ahead of its 3G services launch, state-run BSNL is getting ready to offer international roaming facility to its subscribers for prepaid, GPRS and 3G services.

Presently, international roaming facility for BSNL subscribers consists of having a triple solution in SIM Cards for postpaid users.

One solution is for the home network, other for international roaming through 'Direct International Roaming Agreements' with foreign operators and the third by piggy- backing on an existing international roaming service provider hub.

A senior BSNL official said, as of now BSNL has signed GSM international roaming agreements for 339 networks in 170 countries, out of which 164 networks in 94 countries have been commercially launched for postpaid customers only.

Connectivity has been established with a leading global GRX service provider for GPRS international roaming services. Testing with each of the operators is required for launching the GPRS international roaming services.

Prepaid and 3G international roaming services are in the process of being launched in the BSNL network and accordingly the testing and launching of these services would also be involved, he said.

The direct agreements of BSNL involves only one set of testing for whole of BSNL with the foreign operators for postpaid services. For GPRS, Prepaid and 3G services testing would involve the four zones of BSNL. All the testing would be carried out from BSNL's Kolkata office.

BSNL has invited proposals from companies for carrying out testing in regard to international roaming service with the foreign GSM mobile operators and subsequent commercial launch of the service.

BSNL to Launch 3G Service in Chennai in January

State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) Monday reaffirmed its decision to launch third generation (3G) mobile services in Chennai in January.

The public sector undertaking has already received a licence and spectrum rights to roll out 3G services in most parts of the country as it is one of the two state-run phone companies and is given preference over private firms in offering new technologies.

However, the telecom operator has to pay the same fees as private operators who eventually win the right to offer a service.

"We will start our rollout of 3G services from Chennai in January," BSNL director (finance) S.D. Saxena told IANS.

3G entails higher expenses for telecom operators, but Saxena said efforts would be taken not to burden the customer.

"Affordability is going to be a major concern but we will offer a number of schemes to ease the burden," he said.

Referring to the 93 million lines tender floated a few months back, he said, "We will take more time to announce the results as the evaluation is still going on."

While the slowdown has affected most parts of the economy, Saxena said the telecom sector, and "especially" BSNL, has been isolated from its repercussions.

BSNL is getting better and better by the day.... Lets see what they offer in January. Very wisely, no year has been mentioned and so, it may be 2009 or 2010 (jus jokin) I think a spanner will be thrown in by the private players in the form of some legal issues shortly to prevent BSNL from rolling out 3G services.

Press Trust of India l 15 Dec l Hyderabad

Chief general manager, AP telecom circle BSNL, T N Sudhindra Kumar said 3G Spectrum-- or radio bandwidth-- will pave way for several value added services mostly in entertainment and video conferencing.

He said that it will be a value added service and both BSNL and MTNL are likely to capture the market in the segment.

There are plans to provide 3G or thrid generation mobile phones in 29 cities of Andhra Pradesh, Kumar said.

The 3G spectrum, which is likely to be launched by March, will increase bandwidth and help in video screening in mobile in a better manner than televisions with a faster pace and better quality.

He said that presently AP telecom has 27.4 lakh mobile customers with a market share of 18.9 percent.

Presently the equipped capacity is 19.6 lakh connections. Additionally connectivity planned is 15 lakh new connections for the financial year, he added.

"Presently we have some excellent plans including power pack plan and were able to sell 1.5 lakh connections last month itself in the prepaid seg ments," said Kumar.

About the proposal to have a portable migration facility in mobile as earlier recommended by TRAI ,which facilitates a user to switch to any service provider of his choice with the same number, he said that providing such facility is still under consideration and yet to be introduced.

BSNL to start 3G services in Chennai

Press Trust of India l 31 Dec l New Delhi

State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) today said it plans to start next generation (3G) mobile services in Chennai and other circles next month.

"We plan to roll-out 3G services by next month," BSNL Chariman and Managing Director Kuldeep Goyal told reporters here. The services are likely to be started from Chennai and other circles.

While announcing the 3G policy, Communication and IT Minister A Raja had given an advantage to telecom PSUs - BSNL and MTNL - of allocating 3G spectrum ahead of others with a condition that both will pay the price equivalent to the highest bid.

This was done keeping in mind the cumbersome process to procure equipment by the PSUs vis-a-vis by the private players.

The government has deferred the 3G spectrum auction to January 30, delaying it by 15 days. As per the new revised timeline, the state-run operators might get lead lead over the private operators.
