@ksh@T 20 Report post Posted October 12, 2008 (edited) We heard about the upcoming Firefox Mozilla Alpha launch earlier and as the Firefox Mobile team mentioned in the very beginning, Firefox Mobile will be definitely released for Windows Mobile as well. So far, everything was theoretical only but now we have the first screenshots of Firefox Mobile, running on a Windows Mobile Professional touchscreen smartphone. These screenhots are giving a good impression how the final version of Fennec might look/most likely look like but even more important, the developers managed to run the Acid3 Test with a score of 88/100 - which is impressive for a mobile browser! Fennec aka Firefox Mobile isn't yet available for public download but a first Alpha is expected to hit the Web before end of this year. Honest 836 Report post Posted October 17, 2008 No Firefox Mobile for iPhone and Android It's a straight no from Mozilla Yeah, you read it right. In an interview with Silicon Republic, Christian Sejersen, mobile director of engineering for Mozilla spilled the beans about the much-awaited Firefox Mobile (codenamed Fennec) not coming to the iPhone or Android platform. He cleared the speculation by saying that Firefox on Android is not the thing the developers are looking at in the near future and even for iPhone - it was a straight no. He cited couple of reasons for not developing the browser for iPhone. Firstly, Apple's policy does not allow a developer to replicate the functionality of an application which Apple already provides and secondly, the license terms restrict any apps to run a code in the background. The alpha version of Firefox Mobile is due to hit sometime this week for Nokia's N810 device which runs on Linux. Choosing a Linux-based device comes with its own advantages. The Nokia N810 is open to APIs and Mozilla can fully utilize its touchscreen interface for their product. After the N810 launch, Fennec is expected to be available for Windows Mobile 6 and QT 4.4 platform. Courtesy : Techtree
@ksh@T 20 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 Mozilla Fennec aka Firefox Mobile Alpha 1 released for Nokia Tablets Well lookie what we have here. It looks like Mozilla stepped it up and decided to release a shiny new tablet version of the Fennec (Firefox Mobile) browser. N810 and N800 owners running Chinook or Diablo can now enjoy the fresh new 1.0 alpha 1 version of Fennec, complete with a laundry list of changes: Easy navigation to Web content: Bookmarks, including tags Smart URL bar ("awesome bar") Tabbed browsing with thumbnail images Integrated Web search - built into the URL bar Easy access to multiple search engines Web content: Maximize content by auto-hiding controls and URL bar Zoom in and out Security: Instant Web site ID ("Larry") Password manager Popup blocker Clear private data Devices services integration: Click on a phone number to initiate a call JavaScript API to get device location Popup blocker Clear private data Also: Searchable download manager Preferences pane We’ve played with it for a while and while the look and functionality are fantastic, it’s still slow. When we say slow, we mean sloooooow. The tabbed browsing (pictured above on the left) implementation and navigation controls are awesome - swipe right with your finger or stylus right to open the tabs bar or left to open the navigation menu. Tablet owners can hit the read link to install Fennec or if you’re reading this on your N800 / N810 just click here for the .install file. @ksh@T 20 Report post Posted November 10, 2008 The future of Fennec may make it a serious mobile browser contender The mobile browser wars are on. The competition is between Opera, Mobile IE, Safari, Chrome, and the Blackberry Browser. So far, even iPhone haters would agree, Safari has yet to be touched. It only makes sense that one of the most popular browsers out there, Firefox, and their creator, Mozilla, would want to jump in on the mobile browser battle. A few weeks ago, Fennec, Mozilla’s upcoming mobile browser, was released to some beta testers but was only available for the Nokia N810 Internet tablet. While the programmers testing it out found a lot of bugs, they also felt there is a lot of promise for Mozilla’s latest browser offering. Jay Sullivan, vice president of the mobile division at Mozilla, says the reports from testers were positive and that JavaScript performance was on par with the browsers on Android and the iPhone’s Safari. If anyone knows how to make a browser powerful, but user-friendly, it’s Mozilla. Fennec is going to be no different in terms of their end goal for the mobile browser. First, they intend to use every last bit of screen real-estate to the browser, removing all controls, tabs, and buttons that would take away from the body of the page. Sullivan says they want to “give over the entire screen of the device to the Web content, removing all user-interface controls entirely.” How will a user navigate, you ask? Certain screen controls and finger swipes (for touchscreens) will activate the UI controls in a snap. If that isn’t cool enough for you, future versions may also include support for haptic feedback. While this is all cool and snazzy, Fennec has its work cut out because the others (Safari, Opera, Blackberry, Symbian) have established themselves and are still making progress. savramesh 37 Report post Posted July 2, 2009 Mozilla rolls out Fennec Alpha 2 for Windows Mobile Source Recently, Mozilla introduced Fennec Alpha 2, the mobile version of Firefox . However this release is offered just for testing purposes. The primary focus of Fennec development was to design an innovative user experience that reveals Firefox’s design principles. It aims to include touchscreen support and other interactions suitable for mobile phones and other handheld devices. Fennec retains prominent functionalities like the Smart URL bar and support for add-ons. This release seeks to get extensive feedback on the company’s move towards the user experience. The company focuses to engage Mozilla community teams, including localizers and testers. It also wishes to get opinions from the Web developers. Moreover, it serves as an encouragement for the add-on developers to port existing add-ons and formulate new ones for mobile. This Windows Mobile alpha release persistently concentrates on stability, performance, and amalgamation with the Windows Mobile OS. Additionally, this version also comes with several fixes and a novel glossy theme. This application can be used by anyone operating on Windows Mobile 6.
