MUMBAI: After the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, the young ’uns can look forward to a career in telecom. Reliance Infocomm has big plans to catch ’em young.

The company is attempting to build a pool of telecom talent by providing training to about one-lakh college students and housewives beginning September. The company plans to dip into the pool when it embarks on hiring spree.

Reliance Infocomm has ambitious plans to recruit about 25,000 personnel over the next 6-12 months for its planned expansion.

Initially, the company plans to focus on entry-level training for telecom. This will be provided through a 15-day certification course where the students will be given general training in telecom services.

These students could be hired for service and back-office jobs like data entry and bill-related work. After this, further and specialised training will be offered to selected persons who are being absorbed into the company.

The company also has ambitious plans of hiring house wives and other freelancers to work as call centre executives from their homes or work part-time at the Reliance Web World centres. Reliance plans to train housewives to respond to calls from their homes.

“We will pay them on per-call basis. This will result in huge savings in electricity bills for air-conditioners and other costs,” said Reliance group group president (corporate services) V Bhatt.

The company is writing to 100 colleges inviting their students for the training course. The training will be imparted by NIS Sparta that was acquired by Reliance recently.

“Our experience has showed that the telecom industry does not have trained personnel. We decided to start training programmes. This is part of our corporate commitment,” said Mr Bhatt.

While Reliance has not finalised whether it plans to charge students for the course, it is clear that this is a not-for-profit enterprise. “We may charge just to ensure that serious and committed people are doing the course, but may return the monies later, or when they are absorbed into the company. We have yet to finalise these details,” said Mr Bhatt.
