Honest 836 Report post Posted November 7, 2008 BSNL 'Mandi on Mobile' Service in UP Boon to illiterate farmers BSNL in collaboration with Uttar Pradesh Agricultural Marketing Board (Mandi Parishad) is planning to soft-launch a voice-based 'Mandi on Mobile' service. It will allow farmers to call up a Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) number and get the rate of commodities, like vegetables, grains, pulses or fruits in any mandi (market) across the state. BSNL has tied up with OnMobile to offer this service. The 'solely voice-based' service will allow farmers in UP to get to know the latest mandi rates of around 108 commodities by simply dialing a number and by following the simple voice command subsequently. The farmer has to just name the product and the district and he will be told the tehsil (administrative unit)-wise rates. The voice-based service is expected to be beneficial to farmers, especially to those who are illiterate (they will not have to type in various numbers for various commodities). The soft-launch of the Mandi on Mobile service is expected in 2 weeks. It is currently being cleansed of minor technical problems, say representatives. A similar effort by Reliance 'Mandi on Mobile' was initiated in 2004. The service was SMS-based and enables farmers to keep track of real-time prices of commodities. In 2007, Reliance Communications had introduced 'Live Mandi Prices' on Reliance Mobile World. Courtesy : Techtree
