Nokia's Future Smartphone UI Leaked

96189_matter.jpg

No confirmation from Nokia

The picture you see below is believed to be a version of Nokia's "on the cards" UI. While the phone itself is drool-worthy, folks at Nokia seem to have confirmed that no such handset is about to see the light of day. Sigh!

The good news, however, is that the UI you see in the simulated image is a preview of things to come. While it seems to be a thoroughly revamped version of the S60 Fifth edition that is currently a component of the XpressMusic 5800 and the soon to be out N97, the caption alongside the image seems to point towards a possible multitouch interface (missing on S60 as of now).

There is also a buzz about the possibility of Nokia adopting the patented "touchless" interface that it was working on.

So far, there has been no official word from Nokia regarding the future of this UI. However, recent reports did point out that Nokia will be concentrating on implementing Linux on its high-end smartphones. So, where does that leave this UI? Additionally, with the open source OS expected in 2010, we remain a confused lot as to where this UI/OS would stand in the general scheme of things. We'd love it if this really happens to be a thoroughly revamped S60! It's high time the good ol' S60 got a cosmetic makeover.

We should thank Apple for this I-phone revolution.

Iphone or Winmob are no where near nokia in case of handsets and OS.

Yes i know iphone give real competition to other cellphone makers, but u cant compete with giant like nokia with just one phone, where nokia have whole lot of profile.

Nokia first N series QWERTY KB + Touch UI will take over the market like anything. ( N97)

I dont think WIN-MOB or others can even stand in front of nokia.

I am hoping so much for Palm new OS also. But even they have hardly 0.4% Market share till now where nokia hold 72% of market share.

Interesting to see all this happening in near future.

as per 3 rd quarter results of 2008 nokia has around 40% market share

also win mob devices have fallen behind iphone in terms of market share,. For the first time Symbian has fallen bellow 50% market share possibly because of the rise in popularity of touch-screen devices

though winmob 6.1 cant compete with either iphone or nokia....the user interface is just too dull and non user freindly

as far as iphone goes it is beating nokia .......though nokia is a celphone giant with lots of devices in its portfolio but this is what is astonishing that apple with just one product the iphone , is making other companies go head over heels with their R&d and come up with sumthin that cud compete with iphone

also abt nokia n97 though it is sort of nokia answer to iphone craze but let us also remember one thing that it will b launched in mid 2009 and by that time iphone3.0 will aslo come ...who knows it might having a qwerty keyboard

believe me iphone is an innovation not revolution........it is the best thing ever happend to mobile world .....it started the craze for all touchscreen non stylus devices......and the power it packs under its hood is amazing ......it showed the world how imp user freindliness is for an os .

also till today whatever full touchscreen devices i have seen it is difficult to type using the on screen keyboard but apple got it right their on screen keyborad with auto correction works flawleesly ....u can type very fast (thanks to capacitative screen) i love messagin from iphone coz it just too fast

also lets not forget the revolutionary app store .....before app store how many cell phone manufactueres used to sell their apps like this ( nokia had download application features but it was just bull sh##t)...today google/microsoft all r just upto getting their applications store

as far as n97 is concerned the early reviews have been out ....as usual nokia has used a resistive screen as compared to a capaciative of iphone.....also nokia used arm11 cpu clocked at 369 mhz with less 3d accleration clock rate ...whereas iphone runs on 624 mhz processor with power vbx engine .....the hardware of n97 is still no match for iphone except for qwerty keypad ....

.i m blown by the capabilities of iphone it has replaced my psp is gaming area

i love nokia devices and i know they have a gr8 r&d but i wish to see sum powerful device from them .....in 2008 all i saw was revamped n95s ( n96/n85/n82/n78/n79)....

Also Nokia is not too big in the US where most of the new cell fones are tied to the network and other handset manufacturers surely must provide better deals to networks to push their handsets.

Personally I am happy that Nokia is getting some great competition from WinMo / Android against Symbian and HTC / Apple against the handsets. This should keep them in check and help us get better products at better prices.

very correct.....many people in US dont even know that nokia is a phone manufacturer......

to give an example last yr when i had gone to boston i was using my n95 on t mobile and one of my colleague in hosp asked me that which mobile is this...is it made by at&t .....and i had to tell him that this is nokia handset ...and he was just amazed with the features but he still cudnt believe that nokia makes handsets ......

this is the main reason why nokia is now psuhing its handsets hard into US territory to get some recognition in that part of the world

That is because nokia belongs to europe, where locked handsets are not norm and in US Unlocked handsets are unknown to users.

As far as OS are concerned, I will rate OS - MAC OSX, SYMBIA, PALM and WM (Usability and stability are main consideration)

I find symbian as very robust and stable OS. I have not used MAC OSX for longer but certainly far ahead of WM and better than PALM.

Just Watch for Android Based Phone in Future. it is facinating looking at how Google have Made API, SDK and how they are on daily basis Updateing and taking Submited Patches to Android.

Infact Nokia is also feeling to move Forward to Linux based Security and Sandboxing Model on Virtual Machine Concept the Android did it.

Android is the Most Safest OS with Dalvik Virtual Machine, Sanbox Aproch to OS, Intent based Event triggering. and Linux Security Model with more then 15 file type Supports like yaffs yaffs2 FAT FAT32 etc. it also have Power to Map Any Directory anywhere and Mount Virtual File Drive as Actual Drive in OS making Impossible to bypass Encryption and Security. (The power of Linux)

seeing this Windows Mob 6 and Symbian is become years behind in comparision with iPhone OSx and Google Android. Apple have very Orthodox view in Opening up the OS but you know Android is Open Source OS take it Build your Hardware, Port it and Sell the Device.
