Modding Htc Dream /g1 To Dev Phone G1

Recommended Posts

Fortunately for G1 owners, Google mistakenly shipped an Android Dev Phone 1 as a warranty replacement to an intrepid Android hacker. With a little help from those in the know, dream_kill managed to extract the Android Dev Phone 1's unlocked bootloader and has posted the file online for all.

The G1-to-DevPhone1 conversion is easier than you think. The conversion requires little more than applying the update.zip file and rebooting the G1. In the end, you'll have an unlocked G1 capable of running unsigned code. Unfortunately, this hack doesn't endow your G1 with the Android Dev Phone 1's cool battery-cover graphics

  • You'll need an Android-powered T-Mobile G1 running RC30 with root access - that means you updated your G1 to RC30 BUT preserving root access.
  • You must have root access!
  • Download the unlocked bootloader here.

  1. Rename the unlocked bootloader file to "update.zip"
  2. Move the newly renamed "update.zip" file to a microSD card.
  3. Insert microSD card into G1.
  4. Restart the handset by holding down the "Power" and "Home" buttons simultaneously
  5. When you see the triangle logo (you'll know it when you see it), hold press "Alt" and "L" simultaneously
  6. Ensure that you see "using test keys" along the top
  7. Press "Alt" and "S" simultaneously
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions
  9. Press "Home" and "Back" buttons simultaneously when you're done and ready to reboot
  10. The G1 will reboot as it does its thing - let it do so

THIS HACK ONLY RENDRES YOUR G1 UNLOCKED TO CUSTOM FIRMWARES.......SIM UNLOCK IS YET TO BE WORKED OUT

Yes by this method one can unlock tmobile g1 to any network .also there is one added advantage in this method since u flash device with dev phone 1 bootloader so there won't b any certificate limitations as it I'd meant to b for developers so it device remians very much hackable. ....it would b just like having jailbroken G1. Also this method requires root acess which google have disabled in their update so to get root acess one has to do a force upgrade using custom firmware file which retains the root access....so the only problem is that from next time one cant get updates over the air ..u will have to manually update ur device . Also I saw a few videos of this procedure it us quite simple and takes less than 5mins...the flashing procedure itself takes less than a minute

This is Unlocking to Zero Security it has nothing to do with SIM Unlocking

Remember Muffadals Unlocking is to Making it flashed to Engineering Boot loader to which will open door for Possibly Flash Custom Android Firmware which could be Developed in Future.

But Remember as RC30 have Closed Door to Root Access for 95% or more Devices, which can not be Engineering Unlocked with This Method.

i think most of the people who surf net frequently wud understand "jailbroken" .....neways let it b left to others to understand

dont u think iphone 3g at this moment is overpriced......infact without 3g

but as i said before also iphone eats a lot of data while surfing so its better to have an unlimited plan ( like me so that u can nicely do all ur forum things from ur iphone with ease )

well at present this method seems to b bit ambigous .....just waiting for more feedbacks from g1 owners ......

also thiis is not my method all thanks to diy and dream kill for sending me this

though there r claims that flashing with dev phone bootloader will overcome all seuirity checks at boot up much like superciding .....but lets see what feedbacks come whether or not it can sim unlock ......

also this method is goin to b futher developed as i was been informed .....

as far as rc 30 is concerned google has closed the root access with their security patch ....but one who buys phone from tmobile gets it with rc 29 ....so one who has rc 29 can update with custom rc 30 to maintain root access......also work is been done to patch rc30 1.2 to get root access.....

but one thing is for sure this trick is gonna help developers/power users who have htc g1 as there wont b any need to upgarde to dev phone g1.....

i will keep this thread updatd

Unlocking Boot loader will not Actually Sim Unlock your Phone

so if you have Bought Unlocked T Mobile G1 and Upgraded it to Fast Boot Linux Bootl oader still you are Required to Shell out $30 to Unlock it using Remote Unlock Code

BEAWARE OF VODAFONE for data. Their data services are not EDGE. Its GPRS almost 90% of network.

^^^^ In bombay its EDGE everywhere, and airtel data sux big time here. ( Though they have very competitive data rate on EDGE)

Vodafone is costly but very fast comparing to airtel and even Reliance CDMA.

also unlimited is must when u using this kind device like iphopne and G1.

also it is faster as compared to airtel .....but sumhow i find it to b more or less similar to reliance in speed .....(may b subjective view)
