Lenovo Mobile Could Run On Android Platform !

Lenovo Mobile Could Run on Android Platform

This is the month of announcements and rumors, and here’s one more to get you in an anticipatory mood for more Android-powered handsets. It seems like Lenovo’s new touch screen handset being called the OPhone (hmm... that sounds familiar, a touch screen handset with a vowel and ‘Phone’ attached) will probably be running on the Android platform.

Word has it that it won’t be available for quite a while at least to the US customers but there could be a possibility it’ll be available a lot sooner on our continent with neighbors. It could be China Mobile’s offering of an Android handset but there’s not too much information on the specs this handset is empowered with. But not to deviate from what I’m presuming a lot of mobile maniacs are wondering – a Lenovo mobile phone? Sound’s interesting.

Pricing or availability is also anyone’s guess just now.

China Mobile, one of the founding members of OHA, has been working closely with Google to release phones based on Android, code-name 'OPhone'. OPhone will support China's homegrown 3G standard - TD-SCDMA, though Wifi will probably not make it.

This is not as interesting for those of us outside China, but if you look at it from a different perspective, China Mobile has been butting heads with Apple over iPhones's 3G and Wifi, but no conclusion has been reached so far and mainstream chinese users continue to use frivolous iPhone knock-offs. On the other hand, Google has jumped ahead of Apple and are well on their way to the chinese market of over 600 million mobile users.

China Mobile is moving fast with the phone's development, which means it could be out by year-end or early next year.

On a side note, Lenovo is reported to be working on several Android-y products.

The latest bit is, the phone is looking good and ready for testing. OPhone is a codename for phones that will be based on China Mobile's OMS(Open Mobile System) which is essentially Android + TD SCDMA (China's home-grown 3G standard).

China Mobile has been working on OMS for quite some time now. With the Apple deal going nowhere after multiple rounds of negotiations (because of China Mobile's refusal to share any of its profits), it needs an OS of it's own. A well placed source said,"Given these(iPhone, Android, Symbian) developments, it is becoming very clear that developing a proprietary handset operating system is essential for dominance of the mobile Internet market in China. At the moment, China Mobile is in a comparatively weak position without its own operating system. With its own operating system, China Mobile will be able to commission customized phones from handset makers and keep its hand strong in negotiations over profit sharing. There is even the possibility that China Mobile may move into manufacturing handsets itself."

No word on specs yet but the pic should give some feelers.

The Android fever is surely spreading quickly, and the latest manufacturer to unveil a handset that runs on Google’s open source OS is Lenovo – yes, the Taiwan-based company mainly known for its laptops and desktop PCs.

Well, Lenovo also makes mobile phones (take P960, for example), and right now it’s working on an Android one called Ophone. We’ve heard about it before, when reports about a collaboration between Lenovo and China Mobile appeared, but there were no details on the handset’s design.

Now an image with the Ophone leaked on the Web, via Mod my Gphone, unveiling a device that looks way better than the T-Mobile G1. And I dare say it also looks better than Apple’s iPhone, although I’m sure many of you will disagree. Anyway, here’s the Ophone:

There are no details about the handset’s features, save for the fact that its Android OS is somehow modified to work with China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA technology. This being said, it’s most likely that the Ophone will only be commercialized across China, unless a GSM or a regular CDMA version of it is also build.

What’s interesting is that a British company called O’WONDER says it owns the OPHONE trademark. Even more, the trademark seems to be for a handset that will be based on Android too.

This means that, most probably, Lenovo will have to change the official name of its first Android device. But regardless of how it will dub it, the handset has lots of chances to be a huge success in China.
