12" and below are categorized normally under ultra-portables. They don't usually have an optical drive, is that OK for you? Else go for a 13"+ laptop though it will have a weight of atleast 2 kg.

though even without optical drive will suit .. but if 13 gives price advantage then can go for that also

Well, my thoughts may not be relevant to your needs BUT why dont you give the Atom based ultraportable Netbooks a try.... Because I am using both, i.e. a Core2Duo 1.73gHz 14.1" 1Gb RAM 160GB DVD Writer Laptop and also the 160GB 1GB RAM 8.9" Atom based Netbook and I can safely say that the Netbook is nowehere slower in speeds and any tasks that the core2duo machine is doing and its more portable, has wifi, better battery life than the laptop and all in all does almost all jobs.... I am running Photoshop, CorelDRAW and AutoCAD on the netbook and all run absolutely smoothly... There are many models you can choose from - Acer, Dell, Samsung, HP etc... and best of all the acer one is available only 15K now.... no sense wasting your money...

But if u want something classy then u can go for the new sony vaio's for around 75K, but in that amount you can get the One for all the members of ur family and even some close friends (like me)...LOL

^^^^

Atom is the new (now nearly a year old) processor from Intel which is less power hungry and specifically designed for Internet PC's... but is starting to tread into the mainframe pc's territory...

well this a misconception among many people that atom powered laptops are inferior as compared to core 2 duo machines ...even on many blogs and forums i have seen people publicizing this theory whereas the truth is atom powered chipsets can do most tasks very well and are very cost effective comparitively

Atom is offshoot of US $ 100 laptop development. And its really good processor. Now a days processor speed do not matters much for regular usage as very few apps uses true power of modern processors. I have compared my Athlon 64 bit (Single core - 3 years old) 1.6 GHZ with modern Core 2 Duo 1.6 GHZ and both runs almost at same speed unless you rander movie or use software where huge data processing is required like 3 D rendering, movie making etc.

Photoshop, Autocad, office apps and most other apps runs more or less at same speed on single core / dula core / atom based / via processors.

i am having acer aspire one 8.9 dispaly atom processor . its good machine . not having any processor or spped problem . but only its screen size is too small for me for working continuosly for hours .

Now ordered dell inspiron mini 12 for rs 28600 including taxes . will be getting today . though it seems overpriced compared with caer aspire one but then you don't have any choice . may be prices falls in 1-2 months

Dell Mini is a good machine with a display size of 1280x800 but the HDD is only 80GB which is too small in today's day and age...

There is none cheaper than 14,999/- which the Acer Aspire One is offering for 160GB, 8.9", 1GB RAM, 945 Chipset, WiFi, Webcam, etc.... I think it is the most reasonably priced fully working Netbook till date...

Do post a detailed review, as you have both the machines with you (Acer and Dell). A comparison would be most knowledgeable for all...

Just to be on safer side Donot buy ATOM less than 1.6MHz if browsing/music is not the primary task for you.
