coolboyashok 23 Report post Posted February 22, 2009 BSNL launches 3G services Press Trust of India / Chennai February 22, 2009, 19:07 IST State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) today launched next generation 3G mobile services in the country even as the private operators are still waiting to get spectrum through auction process. BSNL and another PSU MTNL (for Delhi and Mumbai) were given 3G spectrum last year ahead of auction for private players keeping in mind the cumbersome tendering process involved in the public sector procurement system. For the private operators, the government has referred the issue of 3G spectrum auction to a Group of Ministers in view of inter-ministerial differences over the reserve price. The Department of Telecom (DoT) had earlier announced a reserve price of Rs 2,020 crore for pan India 3G spectrum but later the Finance Ministry proposed doubling it. The DoT later took the matter to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), which referred it to the GoM, which is yet to meet for the first time. The 3G mobile services would be made available on commercial basis from April 20 this year in Tamil Nadu, BSNL CMD Kuldip Goyal said. Goyal said 3G services customers would have three monthly subscription options of Rs 350, Rs 650 and Rs 1,350. Apart from this, customers would also get the 3G services through a bundle offer. Arun 795 Report post Posted February 22, 2009 Economic Times 22 Feb 2009, 1639 hrs IST By the 27th of this month, mobile telephony will enter its third generation (3G) in 12 cities in India, courtesy the state owned telecom service provider BSNL. Union minister for communication and IT A Raja launched BSNL's 3G services pan India, from Chennai, on Sunday, by making the first video call to TN chief minister M Karunanidhi. The PSU was awarded one block of 2*5 MHz 3G spectrum in all telecom circles in the country, six months before, without participating in the auction, at a price equal to the winning bids in the respective circles, in the auctions to be held before March 31st. "Considering the need for faster penetration of 3G, and the need for telecom access to rual areas, the Government policy will allow telecom infrastructure sharing between commercial telcos as well as infrastructure providers," Mr.Raja said. DoT also plans enable mobile number portability (MNP) in major cities by August, and in other towns by end of this year. Bids have been invited of providing MNP switches. On the occasion, BSNL also launched its India Golden 50 tariff scheme, where, by increasing the pulse duration for all calls to 120 s, the tariffs have been have been reduced by 50-80%. Presently, a pulse is calculated at 90 s for national calls to other networks and 60 s within network. "Besides upgrading mobile data speeds to 2 mbps from the present 144 kbps, we will also offer video screening of calls, video on demand, mobile surveillance, Live TV, movie downloads etc on our 3G platform," BSNL CMD Kuldeep Goyal said. For this, the company will scale up tie-ups with its existing content providers. However, the telco will not be providing its previously launched IPTV service, which has garnered 5000 subscribers, on 3G. "We plan to operate 5 million lines spanning all district headquarters and important towns by end of this year at an investment of Rs.2700 crore," Mr Goyal said. "We expect 5% of our 2G subscribers to migrate to 3G." The company expects a revenue addition of Rs 500-1000 crore by this customer addition, and a 20% revenue augmentation by infrastructure sharing. BSNL has tied up with Nokia, Sony and Samsung for handset bundling, the cheapest of which is priced at Rs.7000. Voice tariff schemes begin from a fixed monthly charge of Rs.350 for prepaid, and Rs 500 for postpaid. Data subscriptions are available starting Rs 250. The company has tied up with Micromax and Huawei for offering laptop data cards at prices ranging form Rs 3800 to 6000. "Trials are on to launch mobile banking on our 2G and 3G platforms," Mr Goyal said.

savramesh 37 Report post Posted April 20, 2009 Times of India 20 Apr 2009, 0000 hrs IST BSNL puts 3G network plans on hold Ahmedabad : State-owned BSNL has put on hold its ambitious 3G network plans for Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The problem being that Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has mandated a fine of Rs 50,000 for mobile service providers who choose to erect towers on buildings that do not have Building Use permission. This permission happens to be absent for 65 per cent buildings in the city. BSNL being a government set-up cannot pay a "fine" as this will invite strictures from department of telecom of the Union ministry of communication and information technology. BSNL was to become the first mobile service provider in the city to provide broadband speeds on mobile phones in 3G technology. BSNL wanted to install 139 new towers and 3G installation on existing 180 towers for its technology. The total worth of the project is Rs 600 crore for Gujarat circle which also includes upgradation of 2G mobile service upgradation within Ahmedabad city and in the rural outskirts. BSNL had the announced its 3G plans for 12 cities in the country including Ahmedabad in early February. "BSNL officers have explained to us that private service providers have no hassles paying Rs 50,000 and legalising their towers on buildings without BU permission. As this is not possible for BSNL, we are working on an amiable way out of this rule," says a senior town planning officer. BSNL's woes don't end here. The fact that they will have to get stability reports from the three institutes too have axed their plans. "A letter by BSNL to AMC commissioner states that the stability tests for each building would take at least two months. This would only delay BSNL's plans of 3G installation," adds the officer.
