Need Help From Kolkata Friends

Recommended Posts

I am visiting Kolkata on next sunday 03 May 2009, reaching on Saturday eve, and leaving monday morning. I am staying at Youth Hostel, Dumdum. I am thinking about taking the one day city tour by WB tourism:

PACKAGE TOUR FOR Kolkata SIGHT-SEEING

Tourist Centre, Government of West Bengal, 3/2 Benoy Badal Dinesh Bagh (East), operate full day guided sight-seeing tours daily in luxury coaches. Fare Rs. 150/-. The tour covers B. B. D. Bagh, Jain Temple, Dakshineswar Kali and Shiva Temples, Belur Math, Indian Museum, Victoria Memorial Hall & Museum, St. Paul's Cathedral, Zoo, National Library, Birla Industrial Museum, Nicco Park, Vidyasagar Setu, Botanical Gardens.

This being my first time to visit Kolkata, I need some guidance from RIMWEBians in Kolkata.

1. Metro trains are not running on Sunday morning, right? So how can I reach BBD bagh from Dumdum hotel ( I have attached a map of the YHA hotel)? Are there any taxis available at 7am? What will be the cost?

2. While coming back from the day tour, is it comfortable for me to get down to some metro station after last point Botanical Gardens, to come back to Dumdum, or should I go back to BBD bagh?

3. How can I get ticket for the one day sight seeing? In Pune, you have to be physically present to buy the tickets. I will be reaching Kolkata just a day before, so no way I myself can go and book the ticket. On sunday, the bus will be mostly full. So is there any way of advance booking? If there is no online booking, will someone from Kolkata who stays/operates nearby the above address buy and mail the tickets to youth hostel, dumdum?

4. Lastly, where can I taste the famous rasgullas of Bengal :) ?

Awaiting answers from Kolkata ppl, and also others who are experienced.
