Nokia 1100 Security Flaw Discovered

Recommended Posts

Techtree News Staff, Apr 22, 2009 1402 hrs IST

Remember the Nokia 1100? One of the most basic handsets produced by Nokia ever. The phone was a hit amongst people who wanted a phone just for calling and basic texting - and that's pretty much it could do-except for that fancy torch facility which was available for users in India.

The phone was eventually phased out with newer and better low-end kings making their appearances. However, unconfirmed reports now claim that certain editions of the Nokia 1100 are vulnerable with a software flaw that will enable hackers to intercept text messages with some reprogramming -- especially the one-time passwords that are usually sent via SMS to complete and authorize online bank transactions. This has evoked a huge interest in the once dead phone with people offering huge amounts of money for "vulnerable" 1100s.

Not all 1100s are affected if the reports are to be believed. Only certain models from a certain German manufacturing batch can reprogrammed. These versions have been going on sale for extremely high prices - some even fetching an astronomical EUR 25,000 (Rs. 16,00,000). The average price for these affected handsets are in the range of EUR 5000 (Rs. 3,25,000). All this, for the same phone that cost less than EUR 100 at the time of its launch!

The reports are still unconfirmed and security analysts are yet to come across such a vulnerable handset which is why we will remain in standby and wait for the proceedings to run its full course. You might want to dig up your old 1100 in the meanwhile!
