Having telecom trouble? Go knock at TDSAT door

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2004 11:50:21 PM ]

MUMBAI: There's good news for harassed telecom consumers. They can now seek redressal from the Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal . But there is a rider. The TDSAT will adjudicate only on complaints between a group of consumers and a service provider. Individual complaints will not be entertained by TDSAT.

This was revealed at a seminar on "Dispute Resolution Mechanism in Telecom Sector in India" organised by TDSAT in Mumbai on Saturday. While this provision has always existed, it is not known commonly among consumers. PR Dasgupta, former member of TDSAT said that there was no alternative to clarity on enunciation of policies which should be free of "fashionable jargons".

He suggested that a development council including representatives from persons associated with the telecom sector should be formed which should meet from time to time and discuss various related issues. The solicitor general of India, Goolam Vahanvati, spoke of the need to appreciate that the time of a specialised body like TDSAT is very valuable. "Increasingly, adjournments are sought since counsel is not available," he said.

RL Dube, executive director, MTNL said: "Due to the confusion about rate plans, the operator with the simplest rates will find more takers." He also added that there is enough demand in the market place and operators do not need to worry about competition. There is a demand of 20 crore telephone lines. As of date, we have only 8 crore lines," he said.

Others stressed for speedy resolution of disputes between service providers and the government or among service providers by TDSAT.

Consumer complaints too need to be resolved quickly because the amount of time required to resolve a complaint was not worth the amount of money involved, pointed out Rajyalakshmi Rao, member, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Committee.

Technically even TWO persons may be called a Group.

Loose association of people with some common interests could also be called a Group.

To me even RIM.WEB is also a Group.

We the RIM users can join hands and form a Group.

If all/some of us apporach TDAST on any particular issue, it may be taken as a Group.

So the possibilities are endless..................!

I think we GTRAN users should form a group and complain, what say saurav? Can TRAI/ TDSAT be approached via the net cause we al may be from different places, so going together with a representation wil be a tough thing to do.

I suggest Saurav draft a mail to TDSAT/TRAI with CC to Reliance Infocomm and all of us will send the same individually. A copy of the same could be kept here in Forum. After sending we may keep following the same till its logical conclusion.

We may also send copies to Rajyalakshmi Rao, Member, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Committee.

Agree?
