Motorola Skips Windows Mobile

Recommended Posts

Techtree News Staff, May 27, 2009 1732 hrs IST

In what is being seen as a move to cut costs, a Motorola handset, that was supposed to run Windows Mobile, has changed to an Android powered one, mid-development.

The handset, known as the "Iron Man" and "Heron" as per AT&T internal documents, is now expected to be released as an Android phone by the last quarter of this year. While Motorola and AT&T both have declined the comments, this has certainly raised questions about Motorola's handset division, which is mulling over a $1.2 billion cutback and restructuring program.

Even in the business segment, speculation is rife that Motorola is not adopting the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5. The company is reportedly not very keen on Windows Mobile 6.5 as it does not offer any incentives for businesses to upgrade. Motorola's enterprise division, almost exclusively, uses the Windows Mobile platform and the company, as of now, seems to be focused on Windows Mobile 7, rather than the stopgap 6.5.

For those of you who are fans of Motorola phones running Windows Mobile, there is no reason to panic as this only seems to be a temporary cost-cutting wave. Besides, there will always be something new to look forward to once Windows Mobile 7 is released next year.
