How Net2phone Or Calling Cards Work ?

Recommended Posts

I want to know about how the calling cards or the websites allows paid calling - works. In other words those who provide Net2Phone service or provide calling cards to phone service, how they do it ?

For example in US,UK,Canada and in many places people buy calling cards. The cards have a pin number. They have to dial a toll-free number and then they have to dial the PIN printed on the calling card. Then they can dial the destination number. Similarly, there are thousands of websites allow you to call from web from which you can dial PSTN Landline or mobile number. The sites charge you some amount and the call is terminated at the destination end properly.

I guess, all these require a switching device or may be PBX system. Some softwares along with hardware. So that such service provider can accept multiple incoming calls and then those calls are switched to a different international numbers. What are these software, hardwares ? I know that there are thousand of third party calling cards available worldwide which offer such service so I think that for this a full fledged telephone exchange is not required.

There are hardwares available which can do this. But since in India IP to PSTN & vice versa is not allowed, same are not available. Many mutinationals connect IP calls from their overseas offices to the epabx installed in India. Call centers also use similar hardwares. Asterisk the lynx based opensource software also supports such hardware.

For a personel use VOIP adapters are available on ebay ( not on ebay.co.in) which can perform this. If one has a full duplex voice modem then there are some softwares like from twlightutilities & teleonnetworks which can transfer a skype call to PSTN ot vice versa. Now SIP to Skype is also possible.
