kshah 452 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 (edited) Till now I have been AMD processor fans. But since last couple of years, AMD processors are performing poorer on power consumption front. So since I have to change my AMD Athlon 64 bit - 1.8 Ghz (about 4.5 years - I love it but battery life is now just 30 mins and dont get battery or 12 cells for cheap. 6 cell battery last hardly 70 mins) old laptop. I am confused between processor performance and battery performance. My usage mainly is for E mail, browsing, Autocad 2008 for 2D (Drafting for new product etc, I dont know 3D or dont do 3D or rendering) and just checking dox and accounts (Tally ERP, max 1 hour per week) in my office. I want to know which is better processor to buy: Intel Atom (I dont like much, but has good battery life) Intel Core 2 Solo, just 5.5W (USed in acer time line http://www.acer.co.i...wrAjaxHistory=1 8 hours battery life) Has 3 MB L2 cache, so I think it may offset lower processor speed and single core for routine work. Intel T6400 (This is fastest of all with Core2 Duo but battery life is limited to 3 hours.) My basic requirement is Minimum 14" screen size 2 GB RAM, Miinimum 250 GB HDD Wifi and BT Memory card reader and all other standard specs. LED backlit display for better battery life Good battery life Please suggest Edited August 18, 2009 by kshah
dkaile 1,051 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 (edited) try some of these - http://cgi.ebay.in/A...id=p3286.c0.m14 http://cgi.ebay.in/A...id=p3286.c0.m14 Core2Duo 3GB 320GB HDD 34K - http://cgi.ebay.in/A...id=p3286.c0.m14 http://cgi.ebay.in/A...id=p3286.c0.m14 You may also consider a Atom One Acer Aspire One 250 - http://cgi.ebay.in/A...id=p3286.c0.m14 Do also consider Acer Aspire One 751H, beautiful, 11.6" screen (1366x768), 8 Hour (actual usage) Battery Life, 160GB HDD, 1GB Ram, WiFi, BT, 1.35kg, It can run normal AutoCAD, about 27-28K (so, a little pricey), but its newer chipset is capable of playing HI-DEF CONTENT - http://www.acer.co.i...wrAjaxHistory=0 And Yes, The Acer Timeline Series is also worth considering.... but since its newer, it will be pricey... Install Windows 7 on them and enjoy for a year... Remember Street Prices are at least 1-2K lower than these on ebay... kshah 452 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 thanks for suggestions. Smaller screens are not very convenient. I want larger than 14" These days some how AMD processors are giving poor battery performance than intel.

aeroamit 18 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 I would recommend DELL Notebooks. You can check out DELL Vostro series.I am using DELL notebooks from past 4 years and very satisfied by its products and services provided.Their service cannot be matched by any other notebook brand in India.Officially I have Lenovo but still my personal favorite is DELL for cost, Product quality and service. Do have a check on DELL notebooks before finalizing.Check their Indian website and customize notebook as per your requirement.

dkaile 1,051 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 The Basic Dell is Inspiron 15 for about 37K, Core2Duo T6500, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 2USB and no HDMI (removed now) - http://www1.ap.dell.com/in/en/home/notebooks/laptop-inspiron-1545/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-inspiron-1545&s=dhs&cs=indhs1 But I would Suggest the Studio 14 or 15 (about 41K to 45K) because it comes with an additional 512MB ATI HD4530 Graphics Card, 4GB RAM, HDMI, eSATA, 3USB and the 15" model has additionally 500GB HDD and choice of 256 or 512 MB Graphics Card and also a sub-woofer - http://www1.ap.dell.com/in/en/home/notebooks/laptop-studio-1450/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-studio-1450&s=dhs&cs=indhs1 http://www1.ap.dell.com/in/en/home/notebooks/laptop-studio-1555/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-studio-1555&s=dhs&cs=indhs1 I personally will be upgrading to the Dell Studio Soon after disposing of my Acer Aspire 4710 on ebay/this forum soon.... kshah 452 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 see i dont see movie or listen to music, never ever. Netbooks are surely not for me due to screen size. I spend enough on cells so have to save on laptops. Acer range seems to ne too good. dell has good customizable models but turning out to be expensive than acer. Will have to do home work to save money
dkaile 1,051 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 @kshah then dont think twice and go with Acer; I have 4 Acer laptops in the family and all running very good... Am very happy with the performance of my Aspire One 150 and 4710.....

Genius 817 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 (edited) i have used 10 laptops till date since Jan 2001 --- 1 acer > 2 Toshiba > 1 Compaq > 3 HP > 1 Asus > 1 Sony > 1 Dell (current). best one what i find considering all points is HP and Toshiba, my 2nd laptop Toshiba in 2002 is still with my friend so are 2 HP's. Dell is Superb value specially Vostro plus they give 24X7 support as its a business model, my problem was solved (DVD drive replacement) within 2 days bet its faster than many many local shop owners. Sony Fijitsu overpriced, compaq - better not to think, acer had poor build quality Plastic (balti(bucket) look) but recent launched Timeline models are superb with value for money and all ++++++, its one of the notebook whose processor has support for CPU level Hardware virtualization, that means you can run Windows 7 as well as run Windows XP in XPM mode. It even has option of win7 upgrade in oct mean while you can use win7 RTM from torrents, its priced @ 35500/- (14 inch - 4810T) What ever you buy look for WIN 7 support along with Win XP driver so you can live both lives. Hope this helps Edited August 18, 2009 by Genius
Dj 25 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 Acer timeline sure looks like a neat package but i have reasons to be sceptical about its heating issues... Personally, i am sold on the macbook pro 13.3" but dell xps and lenovo thinkpad x series are good buys... I still am using a four year old thinkpad z60m with a centrino processor and 2gb ram... It works way snappier than my wife's hp dv2112 c2d qnd my brother's dell c2d both with 2gb ram... Stay away from the sonys and hp compaqs etc

kshah 452 Report post Posted August 19, 2009 Acer are agreed delicately built but certainly hardware goes inside is superior for given price - but then who uses it more than 3-4 years. I am very happy with the performance of my lappy right now but I am not getting original battery. One seller is giving original battery for 5.5K. Which I do not want to spend. Else old matte screens are very comfortable. I am trying to sell my lappy. Mostly I will settle on ACER Timeline 4810 or 5810 I lost very good offer in Croma (Buy Acer time line and get 10 MP, samsung DIgi Cam free , this scheme was only till 16th Aug.) ACS 130 Report post Posted August 19, 2009 (edited) ^^^^ Croma i feel has the best deal.. not just on special occassions. But they are the only guys having an optional Extended warranty on almost all products. This Optional Extended warranty (no tension for 3 yrs) works out to be very cheap overall compared to final discounted rates in other showrooms. kshah 452 Report post Posted August 19, 2009 ^^ Yes, but during peak festival times, they do have some times mind blowing offers. Before about 6 months, I bought samsung solid state cam corder (My partner is using and forgot model number with 4 GB onboard memory + Expandable upto another 8 GB) for just 9K against 14K retail other places.
