RCom may sign Rs 200-cr mobile mail deal with Canadian firm

NEW DELHI: Reliance Communications is believed to be in advanced talks with Canadian firm Iseemedia Inc for mobile mail gateway agreement that will

provide email facilities to low-end handsets.

The deal is estimated to be around Rs 200 crore, RCom sources said.

As part of this agreement, RCom will launch SMS-enabled Email solution for both GSM and CDMA customers, sources added.

RCom has 82 million wireless subscribers. The service will be offered on pre-paid and post-paid platforms as a subscription service.

Sources said the company is expected to offer the service on a monthly subscription fee of Rs 30 and a usage tariff of Re 1 per email sent.

This solution will enable every mobile handset (including base level/entry handsets) to act as a smartphone enabling the user to check, download and retrieve email messages.

When contacted, an RCom spokesperson declined to comment. Iseemedia's mobile mail infrastructure will be integrated with Reliance Communication's main telecom infrastructure backbone. RCom's pan-India network spreads over 1.9 lakh kilometers of fibre optic cable systems.

Configuring Gmail on WM is easy and scheduling for auto-SEND/RECEIVE is also possible. I'm using it (I've scheduled it for connection after each 30minutes)on my ASUS P552W and getting new mail notification automatically if there is any new mail. Reading new mail (with attachment) is very easy and the mails get downloaded and get stored for future offline reading. However, could not configure rediffmail.

RCom too launches push mail VAS services

Reliance Communications announced the launch of a SMS-based email service for its subscribers in tie-up with Canada’s iseemedia.

Mr. Krishna Durbha, Head – VAS, Reliance Communications said, “iseemedia provides the ideal platform to deliver our next generation service to drive more email usage among our existing subscribers.” We believe our push email service can deliver substantial revenue upside over the years to RCOM.”

Anthony DeCristofaro, President and CEO of iseemedia said, “Mobile connectivity has become more important in everyday lives in India. With Reliance we have the opportunity to promote mobile email to its 92 million subscribers and as a mass market solution to provide full email functionality on nearly 100 per cent of devices used in India. This will allow RCOM to increase its customer base as well as drive the adoption of mobile email usage through new value-added services.”

As opposed to Tata Teleservices which is offering the service at Rs 15 monthly rental, RCom has priced it at Rs 30 rental and 50 paise per SMS.

This application is basically targeted for mass market mobile phones ( less than Rs. 5000) and certainly not for smart phone users.
