I would like to know which parts in this old computer I should upgrade it to make it faster. First is my new dxdiag information of today as on 27/11/2009 of this old system in which XP is installed now and below that I have attached my old dxdiag information when I had windows 98 on this Old system Now my questions are as follows: 1. Which parts of this system can be upgraded and which should be kept? 2. If hard disc can be upgraded then which hard disc maximum can my motherboard and processor support say 50gb, 80 gb, 100 gb, 200gb or more then 500 gb bcoz the current hard disc that I have is just 20gb? 3. Do I need to upgrade my powersupply of this old system as at the back of my CPU its just written 230V? If yes then which how much watts powersupply should I buy? 4. When I had windows 98 sound used to come, now the sound does not come after installing windows XP and I do not have the main disc also which came with windows 98 and this was bought long time back I don know many years have passed out. Now I wanna ask do I need to buy a sound card for this or can I update the sound card drivers if internal sound is present? 5. The processor present is enough or does it need a bigger amount of processor? Guys I am sorry if I have asked too much but you know people say “Old is Gold” and I do not want to throw this system away as my grandpa used to use it and he expired long time back. So you can say it’s his 1 thing which I have as memory and I want to make this run faster. csmart 472 Report post Posted November 28, 2009 (edited) dear chandan, if its your grandpa thing, then dont touch this system means dont upgrade. i will say you need new PC. its like an old fiat (padmini), run by taxiwallas, where you dont get any parts, replace with parts from scrapped cars. its time to change pc.. i will usggest keep this PC as it and buy a new one.. your processor, OS, motherboard are not design to support hard disk more than 8GB max (98 dont support more than 8GB). ram support will be max 512, i guess. so upgrading is no point. you have sound card problem, whether sound card gone bad or not, you dont know. buying new is like you need to slog it out find compatible card. or you can get it from someone who has such old system and throwing away. otherwise even if you get, it will be costly. to make faster, when you compare with current PCs, it will never be faster. reason, processing power is slow, the current software, even firefox requires good amount of RAM and processing. so practicaly you dont have choice. yeah, if you are using office 2000 or Tally, then this sytem will work. otherwise i dont think so. with cost of abt 15,000 u can get decent pc... following to look for Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz 500 GB Hard disk 3 GB RAM Cabinet if you go for dual core and then price will be little less. the price difference between 500GB and 360GB is negligible about 500 or so.. go for interl original or gigabyte motherboard. RAM will be transcend/kingsotn/hynetic. cabinet ranges from 900 to 5000. i generaly go for abt 1500 from VIP or iBall.. apologies if i am harsh, but the fact is, u need new pc... i u need any help, can help you... pm me... just5fun 2 Report post Posted November 28, 2009 Wow... I need to agree that you aren't going to make that machine very much faster at all... OS: Go back to Win98 or try a Linux. Slax would be good to test with AFTER you upgrade. Linux is generally free and you can probably find a copy of win98 either cheap or free. CPU: You are maxed out. RAM: If you still have less than 128MB... Max that out, 512 or whatever. Display: Find a card with atleast 32MB of memory, more would be better. Also, drop your resolution down to 16b or 24b... bit-depth uses MEMORY and you only have 8MB on the card. Hard Drive: Buy two! Get two affordable drives, focus on their spin speed and access times... not their size. You could get one smaller drive that's very fast and one larger drive just to use for storage. Put Win98 on the faster drive. I think your sounds card issues are probably driver related since they started right after the upgrade... you may need to search around to find the right drivers, you can try the drivers from here --> http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=Winxp+CS4232&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 if you decide to go with XP... although I think Win98 would be faster if you can deal with Win98. Seriously though... If you just want to keep the device for the memories... just keep it. If you want to use the machine as part of your network or such, you'll need to hunt around to find the parts, but they should be CHEAP, but is it really worth it compared to spending that money on a different machine, that's your call. Also I have bought a new system 1 year back. The reason I had to take out my old computer out is due to my motherboard of my new system had some problems which my engineer came and checked and had to give it to Gigabyte office for repairing today. So today only i took out my old computer and always take it out for using it when suych time comes. So just want to know whats the minimum costs to be spend on it, Bcoz most of them told me that the processor is good and I just need to purchasea 80 gb harddisc and 330w powersupply and some good memory. Can you please let him know which drive you suggest for his computer, as he is on P-ATA. As I am related to computer sales and service i can say only few P-ATA models are available in India. you can get more option in SATA.
