manivannan 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2004 I have not faced this dormancy problem yet (since I haven't installed RConnect successfully yet!). But I strongly feel that pinging some server is not an ethical solution to this dormancy problem (which is caused due to net inactivity I understand from your discussion). Many users pinging a server puts a heavy load on it and affects the purpose of that server. Especially the ones like mail.yahoo.com and messenger.yahoo.com should not be used for such activities since they are doing us a lot of good for free. Even if you don't care for ethics you should refrain from doing such things because sooner or later you will face legal action. No server will sit and watch its resources being exploited to keep someone's net connection up and running.

Pinging by lot people at a time will cause problem for server . They may consider it as an attack / way of hacking . Not legal / ethical . Deepu , your idea is great but as manivannan said , this involves ethical / legal issues . Edited January 1, 2005 by Din

alam 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2005 I got the freedom plan, so didnt feel need to keep pinging to avoid pulse change/dormancy. Then one day I got bugged by the beeping sound and started pinging. Guess what, after like 15 minutes, the connection went DEAD. Thats food for thought... any ideas as to what caused that (apart from my idea that the pinging was to blame).
dacodecz 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2005 (edited) Hello, If you're having LG Phones then just use AT+CTA=240 in the modem extra initialization string this will give ya 4 mins of inactivity period before phone getting dormant... The maximum value of +CTA can be 255..... Cheers...... Edited February 2, 2005 by dacodecz

dacodecz 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2005 Dacodez where do I use these commands in Run or Ping program Or Hyperterminal are they to be run in a cycle or once only be specific please 25875[/snapback] Dear imvikky, You can type this command in the modem extra initialization string section of the modem configuration dialog of ms OS, and can send it direct to the chat program script in linux OS. These commands will get executed each time when your modem get initialized for the r-connect connection. [From the qualcomm datasheet] +CTA ==> Um Packet Data inactivity timer. Description: This command is used to Set, Read, and Test the Um packets data inactivity timer. Values: 1. 0 : Traffic channel not released during inactivity periods. 2. 20-255 : Release the traffic channel after <values> 1-second intervals have elapsed, since last sending or receiving RLP data frames on the Um interface. Command Syntax. AT+CTA=<val> 1. AT+CTA ? ===> Display the current setting. 2. AT+CTA=? ===> Display valid parameter range. 3. AT+CTA=1 ===> Set to 1 second. Cheers......... alam 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2005 ONCE AGAIN it happened that I got bugged by the beeping sound and pinged a particular site. The connection went dead after a couple of minutes. Pinging the server address (variable for every time you connect) does not seem to give this problem, not as yet though.

Well I dont think apart from pinging there is any persistent solution for dormancy problem. Being dormant is an inherent feature of CDMA 2000 / 1x RTT specification after the ideal time, here ideal times definition is imposed by the network operator. BTW why are you pinging www.ril.com anyway, ping ur gateway machine at the reliance end, this way you can improve the latency and reliability of your ping's request. Cheers ............ Hemanth 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2005 (edited) Just right-click on the Desktop and select 'New Shortcut' in the resulting dialog box paste the below line. C:\WINDOWS\PING.EXE -t xyz.com and save. start(double click) it as soon as you connect. u can change the server by right-clicking the shortcut and changing the server name in the command line field. Any server would do. As long it exists or the nameserver can resolve it. you can also set the window state to minimised. If you find a slow server which takes a long time to reply tell me. Slower the better. Ping waits for a reply then pings again. during the wait no bandwidth is used. If the address doesnt reply or is very slow to reply. ping waits till time our and pings again. cool for me. please mail the slowest server u can find to my email mvhemanth@gmail.com Edited February 21, 2005 by Hemanth

deepu 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2005 This small utility works like this... First it does a tracert on mail.yahoo.com Then it gets the first hop which will be a reliance server First window just does this much only... Then it will start a second window and start pinging the first hop continuosuly with 1 byte of datasize.. This will make sure that the bandwidth used up is very minimal !! It worked fine for me....
