rEdshiFt 1 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 hi has anyone tried installing/running the new windows OS - Microsoft Codename Longhorn ? (Yes of course, its beta) what was ur experience ?
Vishal Gupta 4 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 i didnt tri it. but i heard a lot about it. its all over different from recent versions. it has new File system WinFS. but it requires a lot of system resources. U must have at least 256 or 512 MB RAM. There r so many themes r available on net for Win XP, that converts Win XP look into Longhorn.
rEdshiFt 1 Report post Posted October 29, 2004 s vishal, theres a lotta stuff available out there... i have somethin called Longorn_Transformation_pack6 currently installed ... looks pretty good...it changes the looks of a lot more stuff on the pc than the usual 'themes' do...(there are stand-alone longorn themes available also) infact, i have the actual longhorn build 4074 iso...750mb...its been sittin there for a month..dont wanna install it yet... as u said, they say the optimum is 512RAM(i have 256)...and they also say its better to have 2GB free in the installation drive !! thats some heavy demand...its gotta wait till my next upgrade...(hopefuly soon) SO -thats MY experience...i thought someone might have got it going succesfully...im sure somebody has... harsh 1 Report post Posted October 30, 2004 i had tried Longhorn PDC , full os, beta version, 6 months back. since then there has been no newer version. it was under development stage, so that version didnt have much new stuff. waiting for a newer beta... rEdshiFt 1 Report post Posted October 30, 2004 Oh wow...so how is it harsh ? to start with, what r the noticible differences? its supposed to be more 'stable' than XP...can v like actually feel this?
harsh 1 Report post Posted October 30, 2004 boss, its a pre-release. so never expect a beta os to be stable. minor interface changes are there, but not noticable. more or less, similar to xp only. nothing much to get excited as it's too early version. final release it expected in 2006. so we need to wait till 2nd half of 2005 to see what exactly they are going to put in final release. so as of now, enjoy xp sp2, which is the so called safest and fastest os so far... rEdshiFt 1 Report post Posted October 30, 2004 ok buddy...I'll take that piece of advise...will stick to sp2..it IS actually quite stable...never had any "crash" r anything (ups failures dont count right?) let longhorn sit idle for coupla more months... RSumit 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2004 Have u tried this software called Talisman Desktop. http://www.lighttek.com) It has similar thems which let u change the entire look of xp. Infact theres a theme exactly like the 1st screenshot in redshifts post. And you can edit any aspect of the theme in any parameter. You can even add links, buttons, menu etc dirctly on the desktop... and do everything visually. But its a shareware. Editing is allowed for first few weeks.
