sajokj 8 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 Some updates: Google Dreams of Nexus One Lawsuits Daughter of author Philip K. **** is “shocked” by Google’s naming of Nexus One phone. The daughter of the late and great author Philip K. ****, writer of countless science fiction novels, says she was “shocked and dismayed” by Google’s choice to name its new phone the “Nexus One.” As many others have noted, the Nexus One is a reference to the futuristic cyborgs from Blade Runner which was based off of ****’s book “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” We understand that Google is going for a whole cyborg-themed Android phone collection—we get it—but the difference is that Motorola asked permission from writer and director George Lucas to refer to its latest smartphone as the “Droid,” those darling robots from the Star Wars movies. Engadget reported on Monday that the mysterious Google phone was to be named “Nexus One” due to the documents that HTC, the Taiwanese company that is manufacturing the phone, filed with the Federal Communications Commission. And to further confirm the suspicions, Google filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office last week Friday to claim the name “Nexus One.” Isa **** Hackett, ****’s daughter and the president of his Electric Shepherd Productions, says she is currently discussing the Nexus situation with her legal counsel. Hackett says she thinks her father would have been excited about the cell phone homage to his cyborg characters and that she would have been happy to discuss the naming with Google, but they never reached out to her. So far Google has denied it is selling any phone by that name, but did disclose that one is being tested. Source: RecentInside

savramesh 37 Report post Posted January 3, 2010 (edited) Google's new smartphone to come soon Source Google is now all set to launch its much awaited and discussed smart phone soon in the beginning of the year 2010. The smart phone by Google, Nexus One, will be unveiled on Jan 5 as per the informatiom, with the latest Android operating system known as Android 2.1; 3.7-inch AMOLED touch screen (active matrix organic light emitting diode), a technology which needs no backlighting for any of the device to function, 5-megapixel cameraand Wi-Fi connectivity are some of its other main features. The technology by Android is already being used in many other existing smart phones by vendors like including Motorola and Samsung. MVP 3 Report post Posted January 13, 2010 Google Nexus One Leaves Customers Sour Google’s Nexus One phone may have been one of the most anticipated devices of the last few weeks. But since the smartphone’s launch last Tuesday, it has left a string of unhappy customers in its wake. Nexus One has been plagued by consumer complaints including spotty 3G connectivity, a high early termination fee, poor customer support from Google and problems with the touchscreen. “There are some aspects of the experience that Google didn’t think through as carefully as they should have,” says Charles Golvin, an analyst with Forrester Research. “This has implications for the store they have launched and their future ambitions for it. Google, clearly, has a lot of work ahead of it.” Google introduced the Nexus One as the first device to be sold by the search company itself, rather than a manufacturing or carrier partner. The Nexus One, which runs Android 2.1, has been designed by HTC and works with T-Mobile’s network in the United States. But contrary to initial speculation, the device isn’t free or unlocked. It will retail for $180 with a 2-year contract with T-Mobile. An unlocked version is also available for $530 — a price similar to most other smartphones — and that version will work on other GSM phone networks worldwide as well as AT&T in the United States, although with some limitations. The difference, though, is the Nexus One is available only through Google’s online store. Unlike with a Motorola Cliq or a HTC G1, users can’t walk into a T-Mobile store and buy the Nexus One. They can’t even count on T-Mobile’s customer service representatives in store or the company’s phone support to solve their problems. Instead, Nexus One customers can only get e-mail support from Google. It’s a strategy that has backfired on Google. The company’s support forums are full of customer complaints around the Nexus and the company’s poor service. Google has yet to respond to Wired.com’s request for comment. “A lot of complaints and frustration that people are expressing would normally be handled by going back into the store or by calling the support help line,” says Golvin. “Having a physical location where you can take your phone back helps customers and Google seems to have underestimated that.” Many of the customer complaints are centered about the device’s inability to connect to T-Mobile’s 3G network. The Nexus One does not pick up the 3G network or keeps switching to the slower EDGE network, say some users. Add to all this Google’s decision to charge a separate early termination fee in addition to the one charged by T-Mobile. Nexus One customers who bought the subsidized, $180 version and then decide to cancel their contracts will have to pay $200 to T-Mobile. But Google also charges users a $350 “equipment recovery fee” if you give up on the contract within 120 days. Including all charges, Nexus One customers who want to bail early will end up paying $550. That’s significantly higher than the controversial $350 early termination fee imposed by Verizon last year. Despite the problems, Google can bounce back, says Golvin. Customer dissatisfaction is likely to be just a small speed bump in the road for Google’s mobile ambitions, he says. “Google tends to have a bit of a Teflon coating,” says Golvin. “People tend to cut them a lot more slack — as they do with Apple — than they do with their mobile operator.” Read More http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/01/google-nexus-customers-sour/#ixzz0cSn0gli2

Harshal 11 Report post Posted January 13, 2010 (edited) Interesting article on Cost of making the phone. A research firm that tears down electronics products says Google's Nexus One has "the most advanced features of any smartphone ever dissected" by it. iSuppli said it has examined several smartphones including Apple's iPhone. iSuppli estimates that the cost of hardware components in the Nexus One [its Bill of Materials (BOM)] totals $174.15. In addition to the Snapdragon, the Nexus One features Broadcom's BCM4329 chip, which integrates 802.11n, Wi-Fi- Bluetooth and FM technologies. The mobile phone also includes Synaptics Inc.'s ClearPad 2000 capacitive touch screen sensor. The teardown estimate did not include expenses beyond hardware, such as software, manufacturing cost, accessories or royalties. Unlocked, the Nexus One handset sells for $530. New T-Mobile customers can buy it for $179 when they commit to a data plan. Materials to build the Apple 3GS cost $179, iSuppli reported in June. The 3GS sells for $199 with a data plan or $599 unlocked. The Nexus One appears to be attracting new commitments from suppliers and from Google itself. Google's Andy Rubin, who leads the search company's mobile phone operation, said at the Consumer Electronics Show last week that the company's next handset will be aimed at enterprise users. According to media reports, it may have a physical keyboard. Also at the CES event, Qualcomm's chief executive Paul Jacobs said his firm expects to support Google's Chrome operating system. Chrome would likely be a good fit for the two firms, because Qualcomm's speedy 1 GHz Snapdragon processor is the hardware heart of the Nexus One. The Snapdragon, said iSupply, gives the Nexus One "processing muscle -- most notably high-definition 720p video playback." iSuppli noted that the Snapdragon is already being used in Toshiba's TGO1, but added that the Nexus One's 2.1 Android operating system is particularly well suited to use the processor's fast performance. The market research firm also cited the Nexus One for its "signature" 3.7-inch AM-OLED display. "With the Nexus One, Google has taken the most advanced features seen in recent smart phone designs and wrapped them up into a single sleek design," said iSuppli's Kevin Keller, in a statement. "This gives the Nexus One the most advanced features of any smart phone ever dissected by iSuppli's Teardown Analysis Service -- a remarkable feat given the product's BOM is similar to comparable products introduced during the past year."
