Your Topic did convince my wife to give up NVeg !!

It been a month since i made her see those videos & she couldn't take NVeg any more !

Im now feeling guilty having it all by myself.. +1 to you for that..

But i still remain what i was, although im aware on the few harmful effects/risks of certain kinds of NVeg food..

Like i said, just dont keep it extreme.. else the motive will be lost.

There are ppl who eat NVeg for religious reasons so lets not hurt sentiments indirectly..

The videos are good enough, just that they're too many posted now.

I do care about my family's health being affected by Nveg & not anything else.. not planet/animals etc.

Therefore these talks on alternative milk/medicines/oils/leather dont make sense to me..

And yes, un-interested ppl should ignore the Topic instead of diverting members.. be it any Topic, else report it.

bro, i understand it.. atleast it will help to reduce animal cruelty..

also animal free products are possible. we have to bring awareness and raise voice against animal cruelty.

i am happy to do anything good for animals as well as humans..

i request everyone to try knowing the scene behind each and everything that happens atleast to you..

Sorry for bothering, but why this reducing cruelty for animals only.. For me plants are also living organisms and if we eat them then its equal to eating any other living organism.

We don't eat RAW plants/vegetables/cereals/pulses and all, we cook them before eating just like we cook non veg food.

i think keeping plants live in the field is better then keeping animals live in field.

why don't we leave plants/vegetables to live and die there own life and stop eating them?

We have studied food chain since we were kids and are taught that we humans are omnivorous and are meant to consume both veg and non veg food.

Consider the situation if all the human being go veg (which you and some other will like to) then is there sufficient food for all us humans to sustain life? won't we be disturbing the food chain?

Anyways i am liking this healthy discussion of veg and non veg stuff.

This categorization of veg. and non veg is in INDIA only and no where else in world.

These were my views on this topic and i back Dr. Muffadal on his views.

ENVIRONMENT: Load your plate with veggies. It could be a simple way to save the planet from global warming, according to some experts. HEMA VIJAY writes

Can the food that we load our plates with actually affect climate? Surprisingly, the answer is “Yes”. What this means is, it's time we did our bit to save the planet from global warming by simply going vegetarian!

Did you know that rearing livestock for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the fuel guzzling cars and trucks in the world put together? Consider this. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that direct emissions from meat production account for 18 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for global warming. Apparently, the livestock industry generates 37 per cent of the total methane (a gas which is 22 times more powerful than carbon-dioxide in warming the globe) in the air.

Besides this direct impact, much of the environmental damage that our planet is now reeling under can be attributed to the livestock industry. The World Watch issue (July/August 2004) concludes: The human appetite for animal flesh is a driving force behind virtually every major category of environmental damage now threatening the future of the globe — deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, social injustice, destabilisation of communities and the spread of disease.

How does this happen? Explains P. Sudhakar, joint director, CPR Environment Education Centre, “Ruminant animals like cattle produce methane (a powerful global warming gas) during their digestive process. Also, these animals require vast quantities of fodder for their growth, which in turn depletes the land and water resources available in the world”.

Besides, meat eating indirectly degrades the environment, because forests are destroyed for cattle ranching. “As of 2004, nearly three million acres of Amazonian rainforests have been converted into soy farms to feed chicken and other animals meant for Western markets,” Sudhakar informs. The Indian situation is more pathetic, considering that no such survey has been attempted so far. Further, more fossil fuel is consumed to produce and transport animal-based foods.

“Meanwhile, 15 of the world's 17 major ocean fisheries are either depleted or overexploited, which in turn jeopardises the oceanic ecosystems,” points out environmental consultant, K. Rangaswamy.

According to the American Dietetic Association, ‘a vegetarian diet can provide all the nutrients required by man, besides actively promoting health. Fruits, vegetables, greens, grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and lentils can make a healthy meal, the ADA states. And it is a myth that only meat eaters develop strength and stamina. Vegans include legions of greats in every field from scientists and statesmen to athletes — Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Alva Edison, Viswanathan Anand, Olympic swimmer Murray Rose, and tennis ace Peter Burwash to name a few. Then, of course, it is a medical fact that a vegan diet cuts the risk of heart disease, blood pressure, osteoporosis, obesity, constipation and even cancer (especially cancers of the breast, prostate and colon).

But forget the ethics and the health benefits of going veg. Leave out the meat from your plate, just so that we pass on a liveable planet to our kids.

* The livestock industry is a prime driver behind environmental damages like deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, etc.

* Drain on water: 3900 litres of water are required to produce one kilogram of chicken while 900 litres of water are sufficient for one kilogram of grain.

* It also takes far more fossil fuel to produce and transport animal based foods.

* Major ocean fisheries are now depleted or overexploited, which threatens the oceanic ecosystem.

Turn veggie, prevent chronic diseases - Zee News

Well planned vegetarian diets are healthy and nutritious for all age groups and help prevent heart diseases, cancer, obesity and diabetes.

Winston Craig, professor of nutrition and wellness at Andrews University, and Reed Mangels, nutrition advisor at the Vegetarian Resource Group, Baltimore, conducted the study on behalf of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

Vegetarian diets are often associated with health advantages, including lower blood cholesterol levels, lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure levels and lower risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

"Vegetarian diets tend to be lower in saturated fat and cholesterol and have higher levels of dietary fibre, magnesium and potassium, vitamins C and E, folate, carotenoids, flavonoids," the study said.

These nutritional differences may explain some of the health advantages of those following a varied, balanced vegetarian diet, said an ADA release.

The study draws on results from ADA's evidence analysis process to show vegetarian diets can be nutritionally adequate in pregnancy and result in positive maternal and infant health outcomes.

Besides, an evidence-based review showed a vegetarian diet is associated with a lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease.

A section in ADA's paper on vegetarian diets and cancer has been significantly expanded to provide details on cancer-protective factors in vegetarian diets.

An expanded section on osteoporosis includes roles of fruits, vegetables, soy products, protein, calcium, vitamins D and K and potassium in bone health.

Scientist Develops Low-Cost Soy Chicken

COLUMBIA, Mo.—A University of Missouri food scientist has developed a process that makes soy products simulate the fibrous qualities of a chicken breast, providing a low-cost, tasty way to add soy to the diet.

“Early tests provided some of the fibrous texture to the final product, but it tasted more like turkey,” said Fu-Hung Hsieh, an MU professor of biological engineering and food science in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and the College of Engineering. “In order to produce a more realistic product, we had to tweak the process and add extra fiber to give the soy a stringy feeling that tears into irregular, coarse fibers similar to chicken.”

To create the soy chicken, Hsieh starts with a soy protein extracted from soy flour. The soy then goes through an extrusion cooking process that uses water, heat and pressure while pushing the mixture through a cylinder with two augers.

“This particular soy substitute is different because we are working with a higher moisture content, which is up to 75 percent,” he said. “The high moisture content is what gives the soy a very similar texture to chicken in addition to the appearance.”

Diet influences survival rates among ovarian cancer patients - The Hindu

Researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago determined that there is a strong relationship between healthy eating and prolonged survival among ovarian cancer patients.

The boffins reported the finding in the March 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

The subjects included 351 women diagnosed with incident epithelial ovarian cancer who participated in a previous case-control study. The original study collected demographic, clinico-pathologic, and lifestyle-related variables including diet. Each subject completed a food frequency questionnaire where they were asked to report their usual dietary intake over the three to five years prior to their diagnosis.

To translate the diet estimates into a meaningful way, the FFQ items were assigned to the major food groups reflected in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 (DGA) including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, dairy, fats and oils, sweets, and alcohol. Grains, meats, and dairy were further subdivided to “suggested” and “other” groups. The “suggested” subdivisions included healthier food choices, whereas the “other” subdivisions contained less desirable selections.

The authors found that higher total fruit and vegetable consumption, and higher vegetable consumption alone led to a survival advantage. Likewise, a statistically significant improvement in survival was observed for the healthier grains. Higher intakes of less-healthy meats were associated with a survival time disadvantage.

Writing in the article, Therese A. Dolecek, PhD, MS, RD, Research Associate Professor of Epidemiology, Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Institute for Health Research and Policy, School of Public Health and Member, Cancer Control and Population Science Research Program, UIC Cancer Center, University of Illinois at Chicago, and colleagues state, “The study findings suggest that food patterns three to five years prior to a diagnosis of epithelial ovarian cancer have the potential to influence survival time. The pre-diagnosis food patterns observed to afford a survival advantage after an epithelial ovarian cancer diagnosis reflect characteristics commonly found in plant-based or low fat diets. These diets generally contain high levels of constituents that would be expected to protect against cancer and minimize ingestion of known carcinogens found in foods.”

please do not throw food leftovers tied up in plastic bags as many animals including cows eat the plastic and die. use open paperbags instead.

PETA urges people to avoid fish-eating in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, March 10 (ANI): Activists of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have appealed people in Tamil Nadu to desist from the habit of eating fish, as it is a risk to human health for the chemical toxins, besides suffering of the animal.

Talking to media here on Wednesday, PETA activists said eating fish also poses danger to human beings’ lives.

PETA activists said that by this protest they wanted to urge the people to adopt an animal friendly policy.

‘There are many reasons why PETA is running this campaign asking people not to eat fish. The major reason why we are running this is the cruelty aspect how fish are being killed. As we have shown in this video how the sharks and dolphins are killed and their meat is sold openly in the market for 22 US Dollars to 44 US Dollars,’ said Nikunj Sharma, an activist.

India is the world’s third largest producer of fish.

Founded in 2000, PETA India is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of animals.

The forum operates under the simple principle that animals are not for eating, wearing, experimenting on, or using for entertainment.

PETA India educates policy-makers and the public about animal abuse and promotes an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect. (ANI)

Eating meat contributes to global warming..

Vitamin B12 is exclusively synthesised by bacteria and all fortified breakfast cereals, fortified soya milk, vitamin B12 supplements are a particularly valuable source of vitamin B12 for vegetarians and vegans..

Healthy life is very much possible in Veg..

Humans can digest cooked meat.. that does not mean we are meant to eat meat naturally.. bcoz cooked meat is not naturally available.. Human physical body was not designed to attack animals for food..

I agree, to live we have to kill another living thing.. by going veg we can reduce plant cruelty too..

many little drops make an ocean.. Go Veg..

I appreciate your effort and though am an omnivore eat mostly vegetarian food now but humans are omnivores and our digestive tract is not like a herbivore. Eating meat does not contribute to global warming, in fact there is nothing called man made global warming. There is climate change true but not warming, more cooling, and it has not been linked to anthropogenic reasons. It has been conclusively proved global warming is myth. There might be a valid point that rearing the animals require grain which could be used for consumption but that could also easily be countered because the amount of grain left to rot so that prices remain stable/used for generating fuel is significant. Infact industrialized farming is one of the big reasons of losing forest cover, if the human population only depended on non meat food then farming would need to increase manifold and forests would vanish. Most food processing industries in the developed world use humane processes like stunning before execution. Sadly in third world countries that is not priority.

Regarding the video above.

This is what is called battery farming wherein animals live in very enclosed space and are ill treated during their life, this is cruelty. In the west battery chickens are no longer encouraged and whereever possible organic food products are used. The video is extremely disturbing and most likely from an undeveloped country.
