kesav 127 Report post Posted January 28, 2010 India all set to auction licences for mobile TV services; no bidding required for UASL holders In what could prove a big boost to India’s MVAS sector particularly pertaining to video content, the government has decided to hold a bidding process to auction licences for mobile TV services. The move follows regulator TRAI submitting its recommendations. Furthermore the successful bidders will be allowed to choose from any of the numerous technologies supporting mobile TV services. Existing Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) holders are not required to bid for the mobile TV licence. “The methodology for grant of licence through closed tender system on the basis of one-time entry fee quoted by the bidders should be broadly based on the bidding process followed for licensing of private FM radio stations. However, the reserve entry fee for a particular licence area should be 50 percent of the highest financial bid submitted for the particular area,” says a government note on the issue. The government has earmarked frequencies in the 585 MHz and 806 MHz band with each player allowed to have 8 MHz spectrum. The services will come under the purview of the Information & Broadcasting as well as DoT. In India only sate-run Doordarshan offers mobile TV services. The government has allowed private service providers to share infrastructure with Doordarshan or any other player which has the infrastructure in place. kesav 127 Report post Posted January 29, 2010 (edited) Dear Friends, Mobile TV services are entirely different from cellular services. They work independent of one another. Cellular services are 2-way communication between tower and cellphone in monocast mode(There is need for establishing separate channel for each and every cellphone which tower services) . Mobile TV services are mostly 1-way communication from tower to handheld device (cellphone/Mobile TV device) and works in broadcast mode(no need for establishing individual channel for individual devices). Mobile TV services are like FM radio broadcast and can work in independent device or can be integrated into cellular device. The technologies which can be used for mobile TV services are DVB-H (European), MediaFLO(American) , ISDB-Tmm (Japanese) and DMB (South Korea). We've to wait and see which technology gets traction in India. Live TV streaming which you’re getting in 2G/3G is a way of pulling broadcast services through cellular services. This method of pulling is not spectrum efficient and it can never match quality offered by direct broadcasting technologies of mobile TV services. (No, NOT the TV unit seen in CHEAP CHINESE HANDSETS.. That is Analog TV, with Analog receiver and antenna..) I think this technology is used in Nokia's N92 and N77... The handsets NEED NOT have high processor and much more RAM to handle (show+Record) Live TV.. For eg:- N92 uses 220MHz single processor and 128MB RAM only...
