savramesh 37 Report post Posted February 7, 2010 MCD to finalise new mobile tower policy by Tuesday New Delhi, Feb 7 (PTI) The MCD today said it will finalise a new policy on mobile towers by Tuesday, under which service providers operating illegal towers are likely to be given 15 days to conform to revised norms to be brought in by the civic body. The policy is expected to get a proper shape after a committee headed by councillor Meera Agarwal, which is looking into ways to streamline the unregulated growth of cell towers in the city, submits its report to the MCD Standing Committee. A senior MCD official said after the finalisation of the new norms, those operating illegal towers will be asked to apply for regularisation and may be given a time of 15 days to one month for doing the needful. savramesh 37 Report post Posted February 8, 2010 Notices to cell cos over 200 'illegal' towers in Shahdara NOIDA/NEW DELHI: With various local bodies in the capital and NCR set to go on an overdrive and initiate action against illegal cell towers from Monday, mobile users may be in for more harassment. On Sunday, it became evident that the authorities in Delhi, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad had already `identified' the rogue towers. "Showcause notices have also been sent out,'' said a zonal engineer at the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA). Meanwhile, large parts of Noida continued to face communication breakdown. The only shining light 18 Idea towers have been desealed. According to sources in Greater Noida authority, 150 towers in the rural Noida area have also come under the scanner. "Two leading cellular operators have taken the requisite steps to `legalize' their towers. But others are yet to approach us,'' said an officer. Meanwhile, the survey for identifying illegal towers in Ghaziabad has already thrown up some startling facts. "A leading public school located in Vijay Nagar in Ghaziabad has let operators install four towers on top of the school. This has been going on for the past two years. We have already issued showcause notices to the violators. We will take legal action after getting their response", said a senior police officer. In the capital, northeast Delhi saw some heated action over the weekend with notices being issued to cellular operators for 200 illegal towers in Shahdara North and Shahdara South zones. Delhi has over 2,500 cellular towers of which 1600 applications are still pending with the corporation. Another 900 are estimated to be illegal. After what seemed like bowing down to pressure from cellular operators, the MCD has decided to hold a meeting on Monday evening to be attended by MCD's political brass, senior MCD officials and cellular operators. "We will be meeting all the cellular operators on Monday. We will take a decision on the norms to erect cell towers,'' mayor Kunwar Sain told Times City. Sources said the mayor will also discuss whether a 72-hour breather will be allowed to cellular operators so they might apply to MCD. This application will be necessary to change the status of celltowers from `illegal' to `legal'. In a significant decision, MCD is contemplating a hike in one-time application fees too. "We plan to hike the application money from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3-5 lakh depending on the number of providers who will be using a single tower. We are also mulling the idea of asking the owner of the property on which towers will be erected to become a co-applicant and also pay us Rs 1 lakh,'' added the mayor. The new policy that will be decided on Monday will be placed before the MCD standing committee for approval on Tuesday. The Cellular Operators Association Of India (COAI), however, refused to comment on the developments in NCR saying they will respond only after studying the norms that are decided by Monday evening. savramesh 37 Report post Posted February 9, 2010 Lucknow: HC orders desealing of mobile towers in Noida The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court ordered the Uttar Pradesh government and the Noida Development Authority to deseal the mobile towers within 24 hours. A bench comprising Justice Pradeep Kant and Rituraj Awasthi passed the order on a petition filed by Indira Tower. The court has asked the petitioner to approach the Noida Development Authority, which would provide them information about the lapses, if any, in the installation of the towers. The petitioner had alleged that 130 mobile towers, which were installed in Noida after compliance of all formalities and rules, had been sealed by the Noida Development Authority. The Authority had said the towers were against the rules as commercial activities could not be carried out in residential areas. The court has fixed the next hearing in the case after six weeks. The civic authorities in Noida had recently sealed illegal mobile towers, affecting telecom services in the NCR town which falls under Delhi telecom circle. savramesh 37 Report post Posted February 22, 2010 RMC cracks down on illegal mobile towers The civic authorities in Chhattisgarh capital have started cracking down on the telecom operators installing mobile service towers without valid permissions. In the last two days, the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) had sealed 23 towers that were installed without permission from the authorities. The officials hinted that the action will continue. The authorities have disconnected electricity supply to the towers while those running with generators have been sealed, RMC town planner Sandeep Bagade said. Of the operators who faced the axe included state-run telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and all major private operators. Sources said that about 350 mobile towers had been installed in Raipur by various mobile service providers. In December last, the RMC had served notices on the companies asking to regularise the 152 towers that were identified as illegally installed. As per the guidelines, the mobile service providers had to take certain clearances from the civic authorities before installing a tower. The RMC is reportedly charging Rs 50,000 fee per tower with all these clearances. Sources added that after receiving the notice, most of the towers were regularised after the companies paid the fee with penalty. Still, more than 50 illegal towers are there in the state capital, sources said, adding that the RMC had launched a special campaign to crack down on these towers.
