Gmail Offers Free Pop !

Recommended Posts

Google on Wednesday threw another bone to customers of Gmail, its free Web-based e-mail service. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company now allows people to download e-mail from any third-party account or forward their Gmail for free, or what's called POP (Post Office Protocol) access.

"The Gmail Team is excited to announce that, over the next several weeks, we are introducing POP access to all of our users. To make sure the feature is fully stable, we're giving users access to POP in phases. Once POP access is available to you, a 'New Features!' link appears at the top of your account, along with a 'Forwarding and POP' tab on your 'Settings' page."

They should have provided IMAP access instead of POP3.

But still it is great news

Think Gmail has fixed that. I am not able to use PGTGM since a few days. Gmail was also down for maintenance three days ago to fix some security concerns.

1 GB space may be hurting Google now... They want users to download the mails now so that they can save on disk space.... Nice idea

Also, I believe, one needs to have the dot-net software to get that program to run.

Gmail has no problems with space buddy...

Pop is just another feature they have implemented.

If you look closely, You'll find that, Even if you download your mail to your local pc,

theres a option to leave a copy in your mailbox. If gmail was short on space, they would not have given you this option.

Also, Gmail still offers this service, There is no question of "Fixing" it, EEPROM

Its a service they are providing, so why will they fix it. lol

Also, Why are you guys going for all these cheap softwares PGTG and stuff.

Use THUNDERBIRD which is supported as a mail client by gmail itself.

I've been using it and had no problems so far...

Good luck...

Leaving a copy on server is not a feature given by GMAIL.. Its a feature present on mail client like Outlook/Thunderbird you are using...

If GMail does have no space problems then why are they not offering IMAP protocol instead of POP3.

Can you tell me how to use Gmail with Thunderbird!!!

LinuxGuy: Its not just people with Phd who have brains. Does the guy who started google has PHd. Does Mr. Bill Gates has PHd. :D

Pretender, nothing is SERVICE. Gmail is commercial, and they have ads near your inbox. Its like a MNC, calling itself a NPO, but paying its Chairman (also read Owner) in crores, as salary.

I meant they fixed a security bug a few days ago, and since then I could not use PGTGM, dont know why?

Thanks for the tip about Thunderbird.

Yup..!! Works. Just remember to set the TIME OUT to five minutes, because it needs the time (to authenticate and begin downloading). This is a great one, few months ago, the pluggins had to be copied mannually and was a pain, now it is bundled. Great work.!

Here I am having the timeout to default level and it works fine for me. Perhaps because I am using office internet which is faster and doesn't need the time out to be increased..

Deepu, leaving a copy in your mailbox is a option provided by gmail.

Goto account settings -> "pop forwarding"

You'll find this setting there. Of course, the clients also have this option.

I wanted to point out that gmail also has it.

Also POP and IMAP are mail protocols. Whats it got to do with space? :quest:

And "Nothing is service ???" :confuse:

Whats that supposed to mean ?

A service can be free or paid. Googles "service" is "Free".

What they pay their chairman is of no concern to me.

They can have ads or any other means of gettting money.

But as long as i can "access my mail for free", Its a "free service".

oh, and thanx for the "tip" about outlook expresss.
