savramesh 37 Report post Posted February 21, 2010 Google Can Now Buy And Sell Electricity! Thought Google was big enough as it is? Well, it just got bigger – and not on the internets. Google has been granted the right to buy and sell electricity! Yes, electricity. Google formed a subsidiary called Google Energy last December, with the sole purpose of buying and selling electricity in bulk. And now, they’ve just been given the go-ahead by FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission). “Right now, we can’t buy affordable, utility-scale, renewable energy in our markets. We want to buy the highest quality, most affordable renewable energy wherever we can and use the green credits,” Google representative Niki Fenwick told CNET News. What does that mean? Well, Google isn’t going to become a power company just as yet, at any rate. Right now, their main concern is to have greater control over their extremely high energy costs for their large number of data centres, and to become carbon neutral. But don’t give up hope of having Google become your power company just as yet. The Google spokesman also told CNET – “We don’t have any concrete plans. We want the ability to buy and sell electricity in case it becomes part of our portfolio.”
