But, did you know that it is actually Series 40, Nokia's own proprietary OS, that actually has the largest number of users? S40 was always "sidelined" and found being used mostly on the lower-end handsets from Nokia. The OS, which is quite capable in itself was given an update just over an year ago - giving it better multitasking and multimedia abilities. This made the OS quite contemporary - but still had a shortcoming of sorts. Samsung and LG, over the course of the last year, showed how to make a non-smartphone with a capable OS a runaway success. The likes of the Corby and the LG Cookie have users a near smartphone experience, touchscreen at a price that was affordable. Nokia had nothing on offer in this segment. S40 was not touchscreen optimized and probably had one S40 device that was touchscreen, the 6208c. This is probably why Nokia has decided to bring in touch and QWERTY optimized S40 version in the near future. Nothing is official yet! The news about this new S40 version was as per a leaked document sourced by folks over at Cellularmania. The document also mentions Nokia's forthcoming dual-SIM phones and an enhanced browsing experience on S40 devices. Nokia also promises to improve S40's Internet capabilities although details as to how exactly this will happen are sketchy.
