Different Abbreviations !

Recommended Posts

I'd like the senior members to kindly shed light on the following.

What does the following mean

GPRS

EDGE

3G

1X

1XEV

1XEVDO

etc.

And also can anyone help me understand which is the suprioir technology in these and once 3G starts in India what technology will CDMA operators offer and will it be inventually better than the competing technology vis-a-vis GSm players.

I would like fellow members to shed some light on this by posting their views and opinions.

GPRS - data for GSM (slow!)

EDGE - data for GSM with better than GPRS speed

1X - data for CDMA (speed similar to EDGE)

3G - general term for high speed data applicable for both CDMA and GSM

1X EVDO - high speed data for CDMA (comes under 3G)

HSDPA - high speed data for GSM (comes under 3G)

Dear Arun,

Does that mean CDMA users are already getting 3G speeds as some Corby and BB sets in this forum has already confirmed the usage of 1X EVDO.

Also which one is better, 3G GSM OR 3G CDMA?

I am already a user of Reliance Netconnect Broadband +, Is that the speed you will get if we have 1X EVDO activated in CDMA handsets.

Regards

Jithesh

3G GSM has been launched by both BSNL and MTNL since 18 months. Infact, BSNL's coverage has become quite nice and many major cities have been covered. I am using it since 3 months and the data speeds are approx 1.5mbps DL though the voice quality is pathetic :(
