The Application Store space in India is all set to become fiercer as traditional challenger to incumbent GSM operators, Reliance Communications is in the process of completion of a potential competitive advantage in the form of an alliance with world’s number 2 application store company, USA-based GetJar.

Reliance Communications earlier launched its App Store offerings in February this year. It claims that the tie-up with GetJar will enable the company to offer over 50,000 mobile applications to its subscribers making it the largest offering in India under the App Store concept.

The App Store offerings can be availed by RCom’s GSM and CDMA subscribers. The offerings will be addressed to mass market and not be restricted only to users with smartphones. These will be offered as part of RWorld.

When contacted an RCOM Spokesperson confirmed that the company is entering into an alliance with GetJar as part of its overall Apps Store strategy.

The tie-up with GetJar may also help Reliance Communications in pushing uptake for mobile data services as well as mobile data usage.

GetJar is world’s largest pure-play App Store player as it is not aligned to any operator or any handset manufacturer. It claims to be registering a yoy growth of more than 300% with an average of over one million downloads per day recorded daily across the world. The company caters to consumers in over 200 countries and has alliances with Sony Ericsson, Sprint, Opera, Vodafone, 3UK, Virgin Mobile.

GetJar allows third party developers to use the medium as a distribution channel for free applications. While initially the medium offers fixed promotions for such developers to use the medium, the business model gradually encourages developers to shift to a ‘pay-per-download’ promotional module.
