Greatest 55 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 (edited) Hello Friends, The topic says it all.. I am planning to buy one integrated DVDplater/STB of the Videocon d2h service. Advantages that I think of Videocon d2h are as below, a ) Low monthly plans as compared to others (in the maximum channels category) b ) Only 2 plans, as compared to a zillion plans from others (I like to be given only 2 choices, and select one out of it, as it does not create confusion in my mind) c ) Has integrated dvd/stb, and also a universal remote, which means, ONLY ONE remote for dvd/stb/lcd. So free of clutter from 3 remotes Disadvantages (what I think, since I have only seen and felt the product in showrooms, but not used one) a ) Very very bad build quality (of the plastics, basically truely INDIAN) b ) NO HDMI PORT (this should be a very big disappointment, considering they have a MPEG4 quality of video/audio) Though not even the others have it in their portfolio, but still. Videocon should have had this since the start c ) The remote when i used was not very user-friendly, but this could be overcome after using the device for a week/month Now I need your assistance. If someone is already using videocon services, kindly provide your experiences. Also, I have heard that during monsoons, the connection gives problems? is this true? how is the customer service? if any issues in the stb, are they able to solve it on the phone? are the technical staff capable enough to understand our problem and rectify it in record time? Any other input will be highly appreciated. Cheers people Edited May 6, 2010 by Greatest
KumaarShah 143 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 Any DTH service will pose problems when it rains - the outages will be only for a max of 2 to 5 minutes - again it depends on how thick the clouds will remain. All other services are the same across all operators - even the monthly charges are more or less the same. But Tata Sky is the most sought after brand in DTH followed by Dish and then others... This is my personal opinion and not based on any facts.
raccoon 53 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 We have been using Tata Sky for well over a year. I have till date not noticed any issues when it is raining.
amitnsonu 72 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 I am using d2h since 3 months DVD 5002 Model following is my observation: 1. cheapest plan, they simply have two plans for hindi viewers GOLD (Rs. 150) and DIAMOND (Rs. 275) unlike airtel which have several plans and highly priced. 2. No problem till in hardware 3. in rain all dth show disturbance even in tata sky 4. remote of dvd is not user friendly, very confused 5. most important, it take about 50 sec to startup, very slow 6. if you take gold pack and want any sports pack, it has to be taken for min. 6 months. 7. built quality is average not very bad. Greatest 55 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 @amitsonu, Thanks man for sharing... We are planning to take the diamond pack, so no issues.. and yes, since they have only like 2 plans, it is not confusing at all.. so thts the best part... No problem in hardware... hmm.. for 3 months, must be ok... remote function is not user friendly in wat way?? do u have a universal remote (DVD and TV) ?? 50 SECS TO START UP.... my god, this is really bad... the BIGTV which I have takes atleast 10 secs to start and its a nuisance... Can someone else confirm for other DTH service providers?? Tatasky/airtel?? Does it really take so much time to start?? Also Amit, if you have used other dth service providers before d2h, could you please compare the easiness of moving around channels?? like from one channel to the other, and vice-versa?? Is it easy and fast to change channels??
SumitVerma 187 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 (edited) ^ Bhai, I would any day suggest Tata Sky! Sky has been around globe from quite a long time. I dont think choosing the package will be a problem as you have to do it just once and it continues till you want it. Its better as you could really choose what exactly you wanna see and thats what you paying for. No HDMI for DVD is no no for sure. Wait for sometime, Tata coming up with HDMI output (Component output already available in tata sky+) just like sun direct and then you will be able to upgrade the digicomp with the new one. Discovery has already started HD signals on sun direct. The future is HD Rain can effect any dish irrespective of your service provider. Tata sky installing a new connection for 1600/= incl. everything plus you get 3 months subscription free with life style gold pack. Tata sky takes anywhere around 5-10 secs. to start up depending on the time it has been left turned off. Hope that could help you take good decision. Is it easy and fast to change channels?? Our T Sky box takes around a minute to start up from cold. Now I'v not timed this with a stop watch... maybe next time I will. The program schedule takes even longer to download fully. Till then you won't be able to tell whats going on on the channels. It is quite irritating. As for the software, I found even the Hathway box's software (which we were using earlier) to be better than T Sky. But its not like its terrible... and I'd not say its a deal breaker. Actually in my busy life I couldnt find out whether the remote with d2h dvd is universal or not and even I didnt felt the need of same because my sony lcd automatically startup in AV mode if set once. I have also used tata sky, Remote buttons are not comfortable in pressing like TS. also some functions are very confusing like changing channel language (available only in some channels). moving around channels is more better in TS but if d2h can provide all channels for 275 why airtel and Tata sky are charging so high, this is the reason I went for D2H..
