Reliance Jio - Pan India 4G / LTE network

Recommended Posts

Well, launch date is still not publically notified. Speculated time period would be sept-oct 2014.

Also i happened to pass many towers in my area, could see many new type of Single RAN(radio access antenna) installed on exisiting viom and indus, reliance sites, while the jio own mono pole tower being vacant.

Well, new RAN could be from vodafone as they are awaiting letter of intent from DOT to start 4G service in 1800mhz band in circles where they bagged spectrum. Vodafone stores which i visited in last month says that 4g is getting launched in bangalore and work is assigned to nokia solution

So not sure which opearotr is going on?

Don't worry... On sept-oct 2014, they will definitely give some NEWS to Media about, this is going to change everything, sharing tower with Electricity Board, e-governance with e-bribe, e-wiping the bull, signing MoU with Maesapatoemia for under sea cable, Free WiFi on road-side dhaaba, selling data for as cheap as Rs20 per KiloGram, laying OFC on railway track, cheap 4G Lte tablet as well as tonic, testing 4G on 14th floor of Antilia or Uncilia, Phone numbers + PAN numbers alloted for RJio service, etc... But NO 4G LTE service... Then people will say that, RJio will launch on December in memory of his Dad, and hence 2014 will also be skipped...

Well, the ex-AirHell executives are doing their job well (like they have done in RCom). 4G Lte will never be launched without kicking them out, imho...

RIL plans to launch Jio products & services with 2,000 Digital Xpress Mini outlets

The Economic Times - 22 Apr, 2014, 04.00AM IST

Reliance Industries (RIL) plans to open 2,000 exclusive outlets, Digital Xpress Mini, in the current fiscal year to sell the company's telecom services, smartphones, tablets and also accessories of other brands.

These stores will be about 250 square feet and sell the upcoming services of Reliance Jio Infocomm. Reliance Jio plans to provide, later this year, all telecom services, including mobile phones and fourth generation high speed internet services.

India's largest telecom services provider Bharti Airtel operates 1,700 Airtel-branded stores with majority of them operated by franchisees. In the last 14 months, Airtel rolled-out 100 such companyowned company-operated or socalled COCO stores.

Reliance plans COCO format for all its upcoming stores to maintain uniformity in customer services, an official said on condition of anonymity.

Communication and mobility products category were growing at a faster pace within the technology retail segment of Reliance Digital, a company spokesperson said. "Driven by rapid technology advancements, this category is witnessing faster replacement cycles.

The new concept, Digital Xpress Mini, is aimed at providing a differentiated technology shopping experience to consumers and thereby reinforcing Reliance Digital's position as a front-runner in the emerging mobile retail segment," the spokesman said.

Reliance is the latest in a string of companies planning microstores. Apple, that had so far shied away from going directly to the neighbourhoods and restricted their stores to high street and malls, is now planning to aggressively push with smaller stores in large and tier-II cities in a renewed India-specific strategy.

4G auction: Supreme Court notice to Centre, Reliance Jio, Trai

Source: Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday sought responses from the Centre, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd on a PIL seeking CBI probe into allocation of broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum for 4G services to Jio which allegedly caused Rs 40,000 crore loss to the exchequer.

A bench of Justice HL Dattu and Justice SA Bobde issued notices to the three respondents on a PIL filed by NGO 'Common Cause', which had challenged the irregular allocation of 2G spectrum and 122 licences to mobile service providers in the apex court.

The SC had in February 2012 cancelled all 122 licences allocated during the tenure of A Raja as telecom minister and ordered their auction. It had ruled that spectrum was a national resource and it could not be allocated without taking the auction route. The court had later clarified that auction, though the best method to get the best price, might not be the thumb rule for allocation of other mineral resources.

For the petitioner, advocate Prashant Bhushan said the government violated the 2012 judgment by allowing "backdoor entry to Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd into voice telephony without auction at the price determined in 2001 (Rs 1,658 crore) for a pan-India licence."

The NGO said comptroller and auditor general (CAG) had conservatively assessed the loss to the exchequer from the BWA spectrum allocation to Jio at Rs 22,842 crore.

"The government, while allowing voice telephony to Reliance, has not revised the spectrum usage charges (SUC) matching with what is being paid by existing operators providing voice telephony. They pay between 3% and 5% SUC depending on the quantum of spectrum they hold, but Reliance would pay just 1% of its revenue," the NGO said.

"This has not only disturbed the level-playing field and provided undue advantage to Reliance, but it has also caused huge loss of revenue to the government for the 20-year licence period. Together (with CAG estimate), these undue benefits to Reliance add up to about Rs 40,000 crore and corresponding loss to the exchequer," it added.

The NGO further said, "From the sequence of events narrated in the CAG's report, it is evident that it was a well planned strategic move of Reliance Industries Ltd in which initially Trai and later department of telecom and the telecom minister conspired to cheat the government to provide undue favour to a private party."

Reliance Jio to roll out broadband service on fibre across 900 cities
Press Trust of India | May 20, 2014, 07.36 PM IST

Telecom company Reliance Jio will provide broadband internet services in 900 cities and towns using optical fibre for which it has finalised agreements with partners required for the roll-out.

"In addition to 4G wireless services, RJIL (Reliance Jio Infocomm) is rolling out high speed internet services via FTTx in over 900 cities/towns. The high-speed fibre connectivity will enable RJIL to provide a wide gamut of digital services across various sectors," RJio said in a report.

The company has completed a detailed planning for pan-India implementation of the infrastructure needed for the project.

On 4G services, RJio said it is looking to provide advanced voice calling service using voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology and the company has already showcased technology successfully with Chinese telecom major China Mobile in Barcelona. "In addition to high speed data (internet) services, the 4G network will provide voice services from and to non-RJIL networks," RJio said.

It added that company has also finalised some vendors for 4G devices at affordable rates and is in process of selecting some more.

The company has already launched free wi-fi spots in eight locations at Ahmedabad and nine locations at Baroda and Surat. "High-speed internet trials have been provided to over 55,000 unique devices since the launch. Users are provided 72 hours of free usage which can be extended through reactivation," it said.

RJio recently won spectrum in 1800 Mhz, widely known as 2G spectrum, for Rs 11,054 crore in 14 service area. This spectrum can now be used for 4G services.

"RJIL plans to provide seamless 4G services using FDD LTE on 1800 Mhz and TDD LTE on 2300 Mhz through an integrated ecosystem," the company said.

Reliance Jio Infocomm may start its much-awaited 4G service from smaller cities like Coimbatore and Indore, before ramping it up to the metro cities in stages, industry sources and analysts said.

The telecom unit of Reliance Industries is fast putting up critical infrastructure and conducting trials to bring in affordable handsets and devices before the rollout. "The company wants to launch its network through a tier-II city like Coimbatore and Indore and come to the metros later," a person familiar with Jio's plans told ET, a view backed up by some analysts the paper spoke to.

Jio is likely to have readied its circle headquarters across all the 22 telecom circles with a chief technology officer at each place, people familiar with the matter said. As reported earlier by ET, Jio was looking to fill up to 500 senior positions. It isn't clear how many of them have been filled up so far.

Jio owns airwaves in the 2300 MHz band in all the 22 circles since May 2010. Under the licensing conditions, it must roll out services by May 2015 — that is within five years of getting the licences. The company also bought airwaves in the 1800 MHz band in a government auction in February this year.

It plans to launch fourth-generation (4G) data services using the 2300 MHz band, or TD-LTE that allows high-speed data at much cheaper costs, along with voice over LTE (VoLTE) on the 1800 MHz band, or FDD LTE.

It is widely expected to launch initial services later this year, with some expecting as early as September, and ramp up the operations over the following months. However, Jio never commented on a timeline for its launch. It has been busy stitching up deals to share telecom infrastructure, including towers and optic fibre, with companies such as Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Viom and American Tower Corp, besides setting up its own infrastructure.

Meanwhile, parent Reliance Industries said it would take control of media group Network18, which has a bouquet of news and general entertainment television channels, apart from an ecommerce website. Jio plans to leverage Network18 for its 4G offerings.

The people said Jio is likely to have successfully completed trials on Samsung Galaxy S4 mini handsets, which can be used for providing voice over LTE on 1800 MHz. Jio didn't respond to an email seeking comment. Samsung declined to comment.

In a report, Sunil Tirumalai, an analyst at brokerage firm Credit Suisse, said Jio and Samsung are working together to having a "range of handsets starting at $150 (Rs 8,900) at the time of launch".

The people familiar with the matter said Jio won't be subsidising the handsets through bundled offers, but wants to make sure affordable handsets are available in the market at the time that its services are launched. Handsets that support 4G are currently very expensive.

China's TCL Communication recently said it was preparing to launch its Alcatel-branded affordable 4G phablets in a tie up with Jio, but a deal hadn't been finalised. It said Alcatel-branded 4G dongles and smartphones are already in the testing phase with Jio.

Jio is also likely to have completed the installation of base stations across 11,000 towers, and the number is expected to go up to 40,000 by the year-end. A base station, or a cell site, sends and receives radio signals from a mobile phone. A large number of them put together form a cellular network. These cell sites are typically mounted on towers.

"The company has already connected the optic-fibre network to these 11,000 towers and another 35,000 units of base station units are ready for installation," one of the people said. He added that connecting these base stations to optical fibre is critical to the company's strategy of providing "fiber-to-home connectivity".

The telecom unit of Reliance Industries is trying to ready over 1,00,000 towers for a faster rollout of its services. It plans to lease around 70,000 of those and put up the rest on of its own. "RJIO is going with a full LTE network (with voice on VoLTE). The base stations are dual mode FDD+TD LTE base stations (ie, two parallel networks in terms of capacity)," Tirumalai of Credit Suisse wrote in the note.

It’s been close to four years since Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance has had pan-India spectrum for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) in the 2300 MHz bands. However, it is yet to roll out 4G LTE services using the spectrum even when rival Bharti Airtel has launched the services in a few select cities. The recent news crumbs that Reliance Jio Infocomm could choose cities like Coimbatore and Indore for the initial launch also indicate that the Indian telecom’s new giant-in-making may not yet be ready to take big-bang strides. Why so, even after the haul of frequencies in 2300 MHz and 1800 MHz bands? Why did RJio seemed bothered about keeping the 800 MHz clean? (See Why RJio Wants A Clean 800 MHz?) Well, it is now commonly understood that RJio, which earlier seemed to enjoy an unmatched head-start through a pan-India 2300 MHz spectrum win, is still busy stitching the other pieces together. While it has firmed up a series of infrastructure sharing deals for its LTE offerings, gaps remain all over. In fact, the technological developments in the area of LTE also mean that an erstwhile 2300 MHz asset could have turned a strategic disadvantage that RJio must figure out to handle tactically. Most likely, it has already has, and would likely be using those frequencies for backhauling purposes. RJio’s recent participation in the 1800 MHz auctions only validates that likelihood. That brings one to the assumption that for the access part of its LTE network, Reliance Jio could be using 1800 MHz, the liberalization of which is also a big reason behind changing the course for LTE operators in India away from TD-LTE and in favor of FD-LTE. In fact, ever since the telecom service licenses were delinked from the spectrum, the pan-India LTE presence potential that RJio originally enjoyed has been under real threat. So that should remove the disadvantages that technological and policy changes had effected for RJio, isn’t it? Probably not! Simply because while the 78 MHz of frequencies that Reliance Jio won in the February 2014 auctions for 1800 MHz bands would be good to begin with, there could be crunching pressures as the number of subscribers and network usage rises down the line. The 1800 MHz bands are already crowded and large chunks of contiguous frequencies would be hard to realize. So it’s important to secure contiguous bands of spectrum elsewhere and preferably so in a more efficient band. A long-term option for that would be to participate in a 700 MHz auction when it comes up. (900 MHz is already more scarce and pricier than 1800 MHz, so that’s obviously not a good option and no wonder RJio stayed away from that auction.) But if Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman Rahul Khullar’s statement earlier this year is to be considered then a 700 MHz auction may not be round the corner. Khullar was reported saying that such an auction would be unlikely before 2015-16. That smells of an uncertainty, especially given the history of previously delayed auctions, and RJio strategists should certainly feel alarmed and scout for alternatives. The 800 MHz bands, presently used by the CDMA players in India, could offer an alternative. Given that there only are a handful of CDMA players in the country and even the CDMA subscriber base is small, the bands are relatively uncrowded. However, if both CDMA and LTE airwaves are to populate the bands then it raises the possibility of interferences. So when RJio complained that 4G could interfere with 800 MHz band, RJio’s interests in 800 MHz became quite evident. A positive outcome for RJio was that the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) responded favorably, stating that use of appropriate filters and guard bands would help in mitigating the problem. The 800 MHz is a future-proofing that RJio would like to have in place before going for a big-bang launch of its LTE services. It remains to be seen if that happens through an auction or an acquisition.

Reliance Jio May Start 4G Service With About 45,000 Towers

Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd is expected to use between 30,000 and 45,000 mobile towers when it starts offering 4G services in the third or fourth quarter of this financial year, according to Credit Suisse.

"Our recent channel checks suggest that RJio has completed about 11,000 base station installations nationwide and is possibly targeting 30,000-45,000 base stations by launch. We expect this target to be met by December 2014 or March 2015," Credit Suisse analysts Sunil Tirumalai and Chunky Shah said in a recent report.

RJio's rollout of networks is progressing at 2,500-3,000 base stations a month and the pace is accelerating, according to the report. The rollout is well spread out across the country and will continue after the launch, the analysts said.

The company has signed deals with various tower companies through which it has access to about 1,92,500 sites.

Credit Suisse estimates that RJio's network at launch will be three times larger than that of all the companies that started operations in 2009-10 and disrupted India's telecom market with their price wars.

In a report in May, Credit Suisse said almost 60 per cent of RJio's nationwide fibre project appears to have been completed, making its fibre network quite comparable to those of the top telcos in at least the top cities and circles.

In the same report, the Zurich-headquartered financial services firm had said, "With quick strides in the LTE ecosystem and the expected launch of operations by RJio by December 2014, we remain cautious on the telecom sector."

The Credit Suisse analysts said RJio is in talks with Samsung which may offer 4G smartphones starting at about $150 per unit and as the launch nears, other lower-end handset makers could get involved.

"Our channel checks suggest that the companies have completed trials on Galaxy S4/S4 mini (including VoLTE), and are working towards having a range of handsets starting at $150 by the time of launch," Credit Suisse said in its report in June.

Don't worry DOT is about to finalize rollout obligations for 3G and 4G spectrum which ideally they should have done before auctioning the spectrum. Though RJIO is slow mover but still I would say they are working. However, there are no updates from operators like Augere and Tikona whether they will launch their services or sell off. Meanwhile, I would like to appreciate efforts of Airtel which seems to be serious in providing in services. They have already launched 4G services in couple of service areas when 4G ecosystem is yet to evolve. They have 4G spectrum in Delhi by virtue of buying Qualcomm's license but still they are launching first in non metro areas.

R Jio will start service from next year as per Mukesh Ambani. He informed this at shareholders' meeting.

Source: NDTV Profit

Mukesh Ambani Bets on Telecom, Retail for Reliance Industries' Growth

Reliance Industries will invest Rs. 1.8 lakh crore over three years and its telecom business will begin services next year, chairman Mukesh Ambani told shareholders at its 40th Annual General Meeting (AGM) today. India's third largest company (by market capitalisation) is closely tracked by investors because its shares are widely owned.

Outlining the company's investment plans, Mr Ambani said its expansion plans in petrochem, retail and telecom business will make it one of the global Fortune 50 companies.

The next three years will be transformational for Reliance Industries, he said. The petrochem business will benefit from highest allocation of capital among our energy business, Mr Ambani added.

On telecom business, he said that Reliance Jio has already started limited trials and will begin expanded trials from August. The services will be launched next year, he added.

Reliance Jio will be one of the biggest wealth and job creator in next few years with an investment of Rs. 70,000 crore, Mr Ambani said.
