shanuboy 11 Report post Posted May 27, 2010 Hi All, This is a new scam.... best to be aware about it.....let your family Members know about this. This msg has been sent to me by someone known to me... This is a forwarded Msg. Dear all I cannot stop myself from sharing this with all of you. Its all started when I received a call from someone claiming that he was from my mobile service provider and he asked me to shutdown my phone for 2 hours for 3G update to take place. As I was rushing for a meeting, I did not question and shutdown my cell phone. After 45 minutes I felt very suspicious since the caller did not even introduce his name. I quickly turned on my cell phone and I received several calls from my family members and the others were from the number that had called me earlier - 3954380. I called my parents and I was shocked that they sounded very worried asking me whether I am safe. My parents told me that they had received a call from someone claiming that they had me with them and asking for money to let me free. The call was so real and my parents even heard 'my voice' crying out loud asking for help. My parent was at the bank waiting for next call to proceed for money transfer. I told my parents that I am safe and asked them to lodge a police report. Right after that I received another call from the guy asking me to shutdown my cell phone for another 1 hour which I refused to do and hung up. They keep calling my cell phone until the battery had run down. I myself lodged a police report and I was informed by the officer that there were many such scams reported. MOST of the cases reported that the victim had already transferred the money! And it is impossible to get back the money. Be careful as this kind of scam might happened to any of us!!! Those guys are so professional and very convincing during calls. If you are asked to shut down your cell phone for updates by the service provider, ASK AROUND! Your family or friends might receive the same call. Be Safe and Stay Alert! Please pass around to your family and friends!

raccoon 53 Report post Posted May 27, 2010 (edited) Nice... scamsters are becoming creative. But anybody giving it a second thought and with a tech inclination would immediately know its scam... What I'm wondering is how did they manage to get your folks to hear your voice crying for help?? Couple of times in the past I received calls allegedly from customer care. IIRC it was Airtel. He asked me for my name and address for verification. I flatly refused saying I cannot verify if you are really from Airtel. In any case, if you are, my details would be on your records. Even otherwise, what is the point of such verbal confirmation? He said I have a point and hung up... lol! Edited May 27, 2010 by raccoon

Sadik 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2010 Well, one of my colleagues at office, a girl, received a phone call from someone claiming to be from our office HR. The person on phone was asking her to give the names and phone numbers of those people she works with, meaning rest of us, stating it was some sort of HR procedure. My colleague got very suspicious and asked that person to call later. She asked me and I said, if this person is from HR, already everyone's details is in company database so why ask? So i told her not to give anyone's no. and hang up if that person calls again. Surely she received the call and she this time forcefully said, she cannot give details of anyone else and hung up. The whole episode was bizarre because i am sure it was not anyone from our company calling her.
