Parallel Exch:grey Mkt Calls Use Illegal Phone Rts

A grey market call refers to a call that is routed through ‘illegal’ channels. In India, the grey market mainly refers to the ‘illegal’ international incoming calls.

What is a legal call?

A legal call is one that travels over the network of the authorised ILD and STD operators. Take for instance, a call made by an AT&T subscriber in US to your mobile or landline phone in India.

The call will travel on the network of the US operator and will be handed over to one of the Indian ILD operators like VSNL, Bharti or Reliance Infocomm at the gateways (a switch). The ILD operator then carries the call either through undersea cable or satellites.

Once the call reaches India, they are handed over to the STD operator, possibly BSNL, MTNL, Bharti, Reliance Info or VSNL who then carry the call on their network.

The STD operator then hands over the call to the access provider — either your landline operator like BSNL/MTNL or your mobile operator.
