Chirag 5 Report post Posted December 9, 2004 RAD Bags Major Indian Order Telecomweb.com Israel's RAD Data Communications landed an order for thousands of fiber-optic modems in what is described as "one of the largest nationwide telecommunications projects that has ever been undertaken in India." The order, from an unidentified carrier, is for about $1.5 million worth of modems to build a massive cellular backhaul network. RAD said its FOM-E1 fiber-optic modems will be used to connect approximately 5,000 outdoor base transceiver stations and base station controllers. The E1, which converts an electrical signal into optical signal, has a range of as far as 100 kilometers. The order also covers several hundred of RAD's ASMi-52 SHDSL modems for backhaul over copper links. The unit delivers as much as 2.3 Mb/s over two-wire and 4.6 Mb/s over four-wire links. Delivery of the modems begins immediately, with the entire order scheduled to be delivered by April 2005. The win extends RAD's dominance of the Indian baseband and HDSL market, in which it holds a 70-percent market share. It won that share in good part by its partnership with MRO-TEK, a local company that is both RAD's exclusive distributor in India and its partner in a joint venture in Bangalore's "Electronics City," where RAD makes versions of its products tailored specifically to the requirements of the Indian market.
