anujit 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Yes its terrific I have been using it for quite a while. But dont install it on any shared machine! There are big privacy issues since this scans all your emails even secure web pages etc. so if you have any passwords in your emails, accessed secure banking etc sites and so forth another person using your pc can search and retrieve all that in 0.51 seconds! http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/conte...09032_mz006.htm I'm a very pro Google person! And actively support google's Ad Sense etc that they use in Gmail etc. But this is something that everyone should be aware of!
Chirag 5 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Its like a "search" utility for the PC? Something similar to what MS adds to its OS, right? As of now, Desktop searches thru only 4 types of File Types i.e. Word, Excel, PPT & Emails. So does that mean, it wudn't search other types like CDR, DWG? rEdshiFt 1 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 theres GOTTA be something basically different between the MS "search" we do our pc and the "search" we do on the web.... I mean, any websearch(not jus google) brings up millions of results in a second or two... WHEREAS,the pc's "search for files/folders" takes ~10 mins to search a 40GB HDD...ever wondered about that ? surely, different search technologies these...and i think google desktop kinda hybrids the two...and ijus LUV hybrids
Ashokjp 15 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Well google desktop search keeps a index of all the files. and searches in the index when we instruct. While in windows search, it starts a new search scanning each file, each time we give a new search. Guess Google desktop search also supports mp3 and exe files, as i was able to get such files in result. Its damn fast.
