Anupe 14 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 Could somebody suggest a laptop (NOT a Netbook) that gives 10+ hours battery usage, is extremely light( below 2 kgs) and can efficiently run MS Office 2007. Optical drive is not mandatory. Price range upto Rs.65,000.

aalok 442 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 (edited) Acer Timeline X series comes with all the features you are looking for except battery life.. as you would be requiring battery life of 10+ hours, acer timeline series is offering 8+ hours (claimed).. Greatest 55 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 I have bought Acer timeline 3810Tx, and enjoying it every bit. I had got this from Dubai and it costed me landed in my house for Rs. 26K (was brought from dubai by my friend) It has everything that u need, except for battery. It claims 8+ hours, but it generally gives me 7+ with lowest brightness and also normal work (word, excel, tally, internet browsing thru wifi, etc) Dj has also got an awesome lappy. Its asus. I forgot the model number. Ask him. Both our laptops have LED HD screen which uses very less power and crisp screen. Oh ya, the lappys that we have weigh less than 1.5 Kgs and screen size is 13.3" Happy buying..
djain1989 16 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 @Genuis: There's a laptop that will give you ~10 hours of battery life that too will not bee too bulky.. @Anupe: If your budget is 60K then get an Apple mac book.. It has all you need plus the advantage of Apple's own OS - Snow leopard. In case you wanna stick with Windows, then you can load windows OS on mac books too :-) Macbook is an awesome combination of Apple's own hardware and software. You need to see it to believe it! Anupe 14 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 Thanks guys. I saw one by Toshiba.. with acclaimed 11 hours backup.. its the Protege T130 - U3810 at Rs. 45000. The link to it is HERE Just not sure if its the right one so still checking around. Probably will have to finally compromise for a sub 10 hour model if I cant find one in my budget. I detest these Netbooks or I would probably have opted for one of those. I spend a helluva lot of time away & on the move and would rather not keep plugging it in for charging every few hours while working, hence the focus on a brand that can give me longest work time between each charge. Have made a note of Greatest's Acer model... will also check with Dj and finally decide on one of these, including the Toshiba. Thanks once again
Dj 25 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 @Anupe well firstly, i got this amazing lappy thanks to Kunal... i was hunting for a timeline 3810T when he brought me up to speed with the asus ul30a-x5 (link)... hua ulta... he ended up getting the acer 3810t and i got the asus... the only downside to the asus is its non-availability in India. i had to buy it from amazon and request my friends sister to get it for me. the laptop is a delight however. i had exact same needs as you Anupe... this one fit the bill best. it costed me 28k in all... build quality is pretty good with a nicely spaced out chiclet style keyboard. weighs just a notch over 1kg with 6 cell battery. the charger is pretty small too. lacks an optical drive and sports a c2d ULV processor... which is pretty zippy even with win7. data processing, surfing and media playing is a breeze with an awesome HD led screen and inbuilt altec lansing speakers. i have not gotten around to installing linux on it yet... but soon will... the claims of a 12hr battery however are ridiculous... with legible brightness, it easily packs 9 hours. i am having a great time with it... oh and yeah, the toshiba looks good too... similar specs but for the weight... Anupe 14 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 @djain: Thanks mate. In fact when in Mumbai I use my friend's Macbook and yes its awesome, but the hassle with it is that the built in support for MS office on Mac is absolute crap. If you try to run macro enabled Excel, it'll throw you into a total loop @Dj: Know what.. I was in fact browsing Amazon yesterday and I did see this particular model you mentioned from Asus. Its a rocking model. I just put it on standby since I dont have anybody coming down from the US in the near future, so sourcing one of these awesome models from vilaayat will postpone my laptop purchase We dont get the best of choices for the cutting edge ultra portables here in India, and that absolutely s**ks! Have to make do with what's offered here I was also looking up the HP EliteBook 2540p and the ThinkPadX210. Haven't got pricing for them as yet but I have a gut feeling they'll be beyond my budget lol
djain1989 16 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 ^^ Glad to know you've already experienced it. Well, why not use Win OS on a mac booK?
Dj 25 Report post Posted July 21, 2010 @djain macbook pro 13.3 was the top most on my list... after digging deep i found multiple reviews stating that loading up win os on it, causes the machine to work slower... heat up and yield lesser battery... though that was not the deal breaker for me... i was willing to work with OS X... just the price put me off... Anupe 14 Report post Posted July 24, 2010 (edited) Have finally come to the conclusion that I shall import the ASUS UL30Vt-A1. LINK Seems like an awesome config. Thanks for all the inputs guys. And a special thank you to Dj for helping me finalise on the Asus UL30 series. The one I have decided on ( the silver version) comes with a toggle-able option between the default integrated Intel graphics chipset and also an additional Nvdia chipset if more GPU power is reqd and runs off a 8 Cell 5600mAh Battery. It has a 4GB DDR3(maxed out)C2D processor & 500GB HDD. It weighs about 1.7kg with the 5600mAh battery which is pretty light I think. Just need to know one clarification from Dj on this since he had also sourced the Asus from the US. Do we need to use a 110 to 220 converter for the power supply that comes with the notebook ? Oh btw, it comes with a 2 year Global warranty! Sweeeet! Edited July 24, 2010 by Anupe
abhi.r 95 Report post Posted July 24, 2010 I do not trust on imported Laptops... Though you get better models which are not available in India.. But if these tiny delightful gadgets have a minor manufacturing defect or get some minor problem ... replacing a part is almost cost you same as a new laptop. Also international warranty have many limitations. My cousin got a new viao from US 3 yrs ago with 1yr international warranty. within weeks his window vista got corrutp for some or the other reason, and viao service center said that they cannot install new windows here. you need to purchase a new licence... dont know why they didt provided him a recovery disc which he accidently forgot to bring from US. So I prefer to purchase a laptop from India from a reliable company who provides excellent after sales services. Coz i belive more or less every laptop is the same if all you want to do is surf the net, watch movies and do work in MS office... its just the quality of product, service and reliability of the company you purchase it from. this is just an opinion though. Good luck with your new laptop..
Anupe 14 Report post Posted July 24, 2010 @ razortooth: Thanks for the thoughtful insight. Its true, if it malfunctions, you do tend to pay more to get it rectified if you have to ship it back. But then, I've heard people having extremely lousy experiences with under warranty products being serviced here in India itself. Best option would be to insure the product as soon as it arrives and it also helps if you have connections with folks who make frequent trips to the US. Then, sending it back is a breeze

Anupe... good choice... now the adapters universally ship with a 100-240V range... so you can use it around the globe with ease... another good choice to go with this is this attache bag from case logic... i got this too... its fantastic I do not trust on imported Laptops... dkaile 1,051 Report post Posted July 25, 2010 (edited) 1.3Ghz processor = same as our phone... LOL .... Just joking... but NO HDMI?? seriously... in today's day and age.... err Sorry, it has HDMI also.... edit: 1 x Mic-in, 1 x audio-out (S/PDIF), 1 x VGA, 3 x USB 2.0 ports, 1 x RJ45 LAN, 1 x HDMI as far as warranty goes, you dont need to worry as it has 2 years GLOBAL warranty... which is valid in India.... I am seriously tempted.... Shall we get it together? LOL... again just joking Edited July 25, 2010 by dkaile
