Droid 2 coming next month, first to get native Android 2.2

Source...

Just a few weeks after the Droid X raked in huge sales, selling out all over the country, the Droid 2 will be hitting stores even though we still don't have that many official details on the newest Verizon device.

It may be confusing to some, but Motorola was working on two successors to its successful Droid phone - the Droid X, which launched earlier this month, and the Droid 2.

According to PC World, the Droid 2 is likely to be the first Android handset to come pre-installed with Android 2.2, the latest version of the mobile operating system that still has not been made available to the vast majority of Android phone owners.

Leaked pictures online, like the one above from Droid Life, show that the Droid 2 looks very similar to the original Droid, unlike the X which has a completely different form factor. However, the technical specs are souped up, with a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, a 5-megapixel camera, and 8 GB of internal memory. That gives it the correct specifications to be eligible for the next-gen version of Android, 3.0, which should be available next year.

Other features of the new Droid include Motorola's MotoBlur "skin," which replaces the standard look of Android with a customized interface designed to easily get the latest news from Facebook, recent text messages, and local information from the main menu.

Meanwhile, the original Droid and the Droid X should be getting their upgrades to Android 2.2 next month as well, in addition to HTC's Evo 4G, Samsung's Galaxy S series of phones, and other handsets.

The Droid 2 will cost around $200 with a new service agreement, according to media reports.
