Anupe 14 Report post Posted July 24, 2010 One of my friends ( not a CDMA user) is looking to buy a new GSM handset and he was kind of zeroing in on the ... iPhone .. I have put his purchasing plans on hold by telling him that the Android OS is the way to go (though I am not on Android as yet) He prefers to source his phones from the UAE or India ( US is not an option for the chap) so looking at these 2 regions as his probable purchase zones, could somebody suggest a really good GSM handset running on Android OS? Price can be at par with iPhone or even higher if the specs are really impressive. Thanks
Greatest 55 Report post Posted July 25, 2010 Ask him to look out for HTC Desire or Legend... they are one of the best android phones in GSM around presently.. I might be bad at knowing the latest news about GSM, but no harm in telling you this.. Alternatively, if you are not able to convince him to go for Android (your power determines this... ), and if he is ready to settle in for a pristine condition used iPhone 3G, then you can look at this sell post of mine.. LINK I am just being nicer to your friend rather than you.. But trust me, Android is the best in the CDMA platform... It can beat any OS for the cdma platform hands down.. SumitVerma 187 Report post Posted July 25, 2010 I feel unbiasedly Android can beat any Mobile OS on whatever network.

abhi.r 95 Report post Posted July 28, 2010 Best Android GSM phones available officially in India are.. Samsung Galaxy > Sonyericsons Xperia X10 > HTC Legend > Sonyericsons Xperia X10 mini Other android phones which is not officially available in India are .. HTC Desire > Nexus One I've heard that HTC Desire cost like 35~40k if imported from Hongkong. As on today iPhone 4 (unofficial) is available in Delhi @ 42k I wonder if Andriod is FREE of cost OS, then why phones running on android are so expensive
abhi.r 95 Report post Posted July 28, 2010 Even I do agree as far as built quality is concerned.. iPhone>>HTC>>Nokia>>Sonyericsons = Samsung But if u work on a construction site where tehre are lots of dusts, and you tend to drop your phone every now and then from your pocket or your hand... go for NOKIA, that too only cheap handsets.. they are really stable. I use PPC 6700 since 3 yrs which once flew off my hand when i meet an accident on my fren's bike(that was the first scratch on my phone, but sad it wasant the last ) and many times the phone fell from my hand... never ever had any problem with my PPC 6700 untill recently when my phone fell while it was being charged, so the USB port connection broke from inside, and I got a new USB port in it in a local mobile repair shop. So I guess HTC phones are also very sturdy.
vvinayakpai 26 Report post Posted March 2, 2011 This is a general query about android phones in general. I happened to see a Galaxy 3 phone recently and noticed that it has a preloaded SKYPE app. So does this mean that we can make skype calls through the phone??????? Also is it permitted to make calls within India through Skype????? I remember readinf somewhere that it is not yet allowed or something like that!!!!!!! If that is possible then I plan to wait for the LG Optimus 2x which comes with dual core processor!!!!!!
rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted March 2, 2011 Use of VoIP for domestic long distance in INDIA is somewhat restricted because voice calls are not permitted to cross from the regular phone network over to the internet or vice versa. That means that the only kinds of NLD VoIP calls that are permitted are calls between VoIP devices. 1. VoIP voice call originates and terminates on VoIP-enabled device. This is the only type of VoIP NLD call that is permitted in India. At least 3 types of devices can be VoIP-enabled: a PC, a smartphone, or a VoIP digital phone. Enabling a PC or a laptop involves downloading and installing a 'VoIP softphone' (aka 'VoIP client') to the device. This is done just as you would install any software on your computer. 2. Voice call originates on a regular India landline or mobile phone, but terminates on a VoIP-enabled device. This type of 'VoIP dial in' calling is not allowed in India. VoIP dial-in services are offered in many countries around the world, but as yet are not legal in India. Note, if you are using a VoIP-enabled smartphone, then this rule doesn't apply and you should read #1 above. 3. VoIP call originates on a VoIP-enabled device, but terminates on a regular India landline or mobile phone. As with #2, this type of VoIP calling, called 'VoIP dial-out' service, is not permitted in India. VoIP dial-out services are offered in many countries, but as yet are not legal in India. Note, if you dialing to a VoIP-enabled smartphone, then this rule doesn't apply and you should read #1 above. Yes Skype is available for Androids and you can use it on any Android.... It won't need Dual Core Processors...

vvinayakpai 26 Report post Posted March 2, 2011 (edited) @rajanmehta - +1 to you. Thanks for the detailed explanation. So that means if I am using an android phone which supports Voip I can make a Voip call to another user who also has a similar android phone, right? Also, is it enough for me to load the skype software in the android phone and then use it for Voip calls or do i have to buy an android phone which Says VOIP as a feature????? Does LG Optimus 1 support Voip? Edited March 2, 2011 by vvinayakpai
rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted March 2, 2011 Yes...You can make Voip Calls from one android to another....Just install Skype in Android...Nothing like any phone having Voip as a Feature....Skype is a software....And should run on all androids meeting it's system requirements...Some Caveats though....Requirements to run Skype...As Per Skype Website... If your phone is running Android OS version 2.1 and above, you can download the application. You will need at least 27MB of free memory space on your handset, and the handset should have 600Mhz or more processing power. The supported screen resolutions are 320x240, 240x400, 320x480, 800x480 and 850x480. The application currently runs on some Samsung Android handsets, but not all. If your Samsung Galaxy S is running with the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update, then Skype is supported, but if you're still running Android 2.1 then you will not be able to sign in to Skype. We're working on a solution that will run on more Samsung devices. LG Optimus 1 should support Skype based on the above..
