ASUS Announces Eee Pad Slider, Transformer

Both Tablets will run Android 3.0 powered by Nvidia Tegra 2 processor

It was predicted that this year would be the year of the tablets and Asus has kicked of 2011 in style with their latest Eee Pad announcement. The two tablets known as Slider and Transformer will be available sometime in April and May and will be powered by Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor running Google Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). The Transformer will cost somewhere between $400 (Rs. 18,179) and $700 (Rs..31,813) and the Slider will range between $500 (Rs. 22,724) and $800 (Rs. 36,538).

Both feature a screen size of 10.1" and sport an IPS panel like the iPad, but a higher HD resolution of 1280x800. For connectivity, you have mini-HDMI to hook up to your HDTV, a miniUSB and a microSD card slot for expansion. Both tablets pack in dual cameras -a 1.2MP front facing camera and a 5MP rear camera with LED flash. The tablet alone would weigh around 2.2pounds and is about 0.5" thick.

Both tablets will have an option of 512MB and 1GB of internal memory and storage capacities of 16GB/32GB internal flash memory (the Transformer will also get a 64GB flash memory option) along with the option of expanding it further through the microSD card slot. It will also have Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR (no Bluetooth 3.0), WiFi b/g/n, USB 2.0.

114056_2.jpg

Now the major difference between the two is the keyboard. The Eee Pad Slider will come with a sliding chiclet keyboard, so if you are going to be typing a lot and don't want to get the case/keyboard combo, ASUS has already taken care of that for you. The tablet pops open and rests on a hinge giving you a comfortable angle to type on.

114056_3.jpg

114056_4.jpg

The Eee Pad Transformer on the other hand is for people who would like the keyboard as an option and don't want to lug around that extra bulk. Since the keyboard doesn't have to be carried around, it's slightly bigger with a trackpad and also packs in a battery pack for extended battery life. Together the Transformer is said to last 16hrs on a single charge and the tablet by itself should last for 8hrs.

Motorola Officially Unveils the Xoom Tablet

Following multiple teases like Google’s Andy Rubin showing up with it, an aggressive teaser ad and much more, Motorola have finally unveiled their Android Honeycomb tablet, the Xoom.

img_286172_motorolaxoom_450x360.jpg

The Xoom was the first tablet to be showcased running Google’s tablet-optimized Operating System, Android 3.0 Honeycomb. It’s powered by a 1GHz nVidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, which will ensure it’s a lot faster than most of the tablets out in the market right now. It also features a 10.1-inch touchscreen at a resolution of 1280x800, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and a 5 megapixel rear-facing one that supports 720p video recording, 1080p FullHD video playback, an HDMI slot, Adobe Flash Player, 32GB of internal storage that can be upgraded via an SD card slot and much more. The device even boasts of an inbuilt gyroscope, accelerometer, barometer, e-compass and adaptive lighting for various apps. Oh and did we mention it will have access to the 3D version of Google Maps, Google e-Books and the Android Market?

All of this promises to make the Motorola Xoom one of the most powerful and feature-packed tablets yet. Motorola haven’t announced the pricing yet, but it’s likely to be high considering all those awesome features. Regardless, it’s expected to be out as a 3G/Wi-Fi device by the end of March, with a 4G (LTE) version out in the second quarter of the year. This means the Xoom will be the world’s first device to ship with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, because ASUS’ tablets aren’t expected to be out until May.

We absolutely cannot wait. Hope March comes around soon.

Simmtronics Announces 7" Tablets

IMG_1649.jpg

Simmtronics Semiconductors showcased its 7″ Android tablets at a press event in New Delhi, India. Earlier, we posted that Simmtronics would be launching its 10″ tablets, but it seems Simmtronics decided to stick to the 7″ display size. In fact, to our amusement, there were 3 different versions of the 7″ tablet on display!

Out of these three tablets only one was powered on and it was the same prototype unit displayed in CES 2011. The tablet that was officially announced is called the SIMM ST721 and runs on Android 2.2 with a custom UI on top. The tablet specification are -

7" WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) resistive touchscreen display

VT8505 ARM926EJ-S processor

256MB DDRII RAM

2GB flash memory expandable upto 16GB

WiFi (802.11 b/g)

SD card reader

Interestingly, the tablet has an SD card reader and even comes with 2 mini USB port on the side. The Menu, back and home buttons were placed on the side instead of the top bezel. From what we could figure out from the web, the processor mentioned here is a mere 300MHz!

No word on pricing as yet.

HTC Flyer Due for March Launch

Will come pre-loaded with Android 2.3 Gingerbread

HTC has been rumored to be working on Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS based tablet since last year. Taiwanese news daily DigiTimes reported that according to the sources at the handset component suppliers, HTC plans to start shipping its tablet dubbed The Flyer by March. However, HTC Flyer would run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and would appear as an enlarged version of the HTC Desire. Oh boy, HTC might just do what Samsung did with Galaxy Tab - an enlarged version of the Galaxy S.

The tablet will be able to run Android 3.0 Honeycomb once it has been passed on to HTC by Google. So Flyer will come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and would be upgradeable to Honeycomb.

As per the sources, HTC will partner with an unannounced U.S. telecom carrier and introduce the Flyer tablet in March. The company will introduce two more tablets running Android 3.0 in June this year. Flyer is expected to get some lead before RIM PlayBook and Motorola XOOM which are expected to be launched in March-April timeframe.

Acer to launch Honeycomb tablets in India this March

acer-tablets-india.jpg

Acer India today said the company will be launching five Android tablets in the country by March. These tablets will feature different display sizes varying from 4.8 inches to 10 inches.

However, Acer showed off only three tablets at the launch event last year in New York. So we presume that two of these tablets will have a WiFi and a 3G version each, whereas the smaller tablet (with a display size of 4.8 inches) will only have a single 3G version.

Company also added that all of them will be running on Honeycomb, reported Times of India.

"Tablets are doing well in India. By December 2011, when the associated services like 3G stabilise, we expect the overall sales of tablets in India to reach the figure of 6,000-8,000 per month," said S Rajendran, chief marketing officer of Acer India.

He also ducked out the price of 7 inch Acer tablet, which will be sold for around Rs 24,000. Acer is also expected to launch 4-5 Android phones in the second half of the year in India.

HP Palm 'Think Beyond' Teaser Shows New Device

The company is expected to unveil new Topaz tablet at the webOS event on February 9

Techtree Feb 03, 2011 1141 hrs IST

HP Palm is all charged up for the February 9 webOS Event for which the company has reportedly sent out invites early last month. At this event, everyone anticipates to get the sneak peak of the next generation webOS, new phone/portable music player and the Topaz tablet. On the HP Palm blog, a teaser video giving a glimpse of upcoming device was posted just a few hours ago.

Last week, details with internal render images of HP Palm's webOS based Topaz tablet was leaked on the web by PreCentral and Engadget. According to the specification details leaked, Palm will unveil two tablets with different screen sizes - 7-inch codenamed Opal and 9.7-inch codenamed Topaz. However, HP Palm will unveil Topaz tablet first by this summer while the Opal tablet in three versions: Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi+3G and Wi-Fi+LTE is scheduled to arrive later this year.

114359_tablets.jpg

HP Palm's Topaz has 9.7-inch multi-touch capacitive display with Gorilla Glass that is big enough to compete with Apple iPad (even iPad 2) and Motorola XOOM. Topaz houses a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8660 processor coupled with Adreno 220 GPU, thereby packing good enough computing and graphics punch to run HD video (maybe), bit heavy applications, and 3D games. Wireless connectivity features include Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth, ambient light sensor, notification lights, and accelerometer.

In terms of software, we believe HP will unveil a tablet-version of the webOS just like Google introduced Android 3.0 Honeycomb last month at CES 2011.

Archos Arnova 8 and 10 tablets hit the bargain bin

Cheapest Android Tablets...

We know, Archos already makes fairly cheap tablets, but believe it or not, the company's going after an even cheaper segment with its new Arnova 8 and 10. The two have been popping up all around the web -- they stopped by the FCC earlier this week and there was an early spec leak from a Russian site -- but now we're finally getting some real details and hands-on impressions courtesy of Charbax, who is quite possibly the biggest Archos fan in the world. The $199 10.1-inch Arnova 10, which we have to say looks a lot like the Archos 101, packs a 600MHz Rockchip RK2818 processor, resistive touchscreen, 8GB of storage, and Android 2.1 -- but before you gag, know that there should also be a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 Rockchip RK 2918 / capacitive touchscreen version coming in April. Meanwhile, the 8-inch Arnova 8 rings up at $150 with the same processor and resistive touchscreen, but only 4GB of storage. If the cut corners don't faze you and you're in the mood for a closer look, we suggest you hit the break for some Charbax video originals.

iPad in iPad Alternatives? Yes.... It's Worth It... Sorprendido.gif

Apple iPad 2 Launched with Dual-core 1GHz CPU

Slimmer, lighter, carries two cameras, and the launch cost is same as its predecessor

After months of speculations and rumors, the moment has finally arrived. Apple has unveiled the second generation Apple iPad 2 tablet at an event held in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. New Apple iPad 2 is mere 8.8mm thin and sports dual-core 1GHz Apple A5 processor but carries the same 9.7-inch display. Apple announced that the iPad 2 would be also be available in White color.

The Apple iPad 2 retains the screen size with 9.7-inch LED-backlit display and the company clearly rubbished the possibility of any 7-inch tablet. It is said to be 33 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter compared to its predecessor.

Design

Although Apple CEO Steve Jobs couldn't stop emphasizing on the new design, the iPad 2 looks nothing different from the iPad from the front. However, when looked from the side, it certainly has shed a lot of weight and got the iPod touch 3G like slimmer back panel. Weighing a mere 1.3 pounds, the new iPad 2 measures 8.8mm slim which is just a hair thicker than the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2011.

114667_apple2.jpg

Processor

Apple has used in-house designed dual-core 1GHz A5 System-on-Chip processor inside the second generation tablet. It's capable enough for multi-tasking, video recording, FaceTime video calls and loads apps faster. The Graphics core boosts nine times better visual performance compared to the first generation iPad.

Cameras

Back camera: Video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still camera with 5x digital zoom

Front camera: Video recording, VGA up to 30 frames per second with audio; VGA-quality still camera.

Connectivity

The iPad 2 will have 3G network support along with Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n) and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. Apple has shelled out a new HDMI cable connector that promises 1080p HD video output when connected to the proprietary 30-pin dock connector port on the iPad 2.

Other Features

Apple has added three-axis gyrometer along with accelerometer in the iPad 2 that can be used in several innovative apps and mostly gaming. The side switch will now offer users two options - Mute or Rotation lock. Several users were unhappy when Apple had changed this function via a software update for the first generation iPad. At the back panel lies the speak mesh that seems to promise a decent audio out put.

Battery life

The battery life remains the same - 10 hours when in use and a month long stand by time.

114667_apple1.jpg

Pricing

16GB iPad 2 WiFi - $499

32GB iPad 2 WiFi - $599

64GB iPad 2 WiFi - $699

16GB iPad 2 WiFi+3G - $629

32GB iPad 2 WiFi+3G - $729

64GB iPad 2 WiFi+3G - $829

HDMI Connector Cable - $39

Poly Smart Cover in 5 colors - $39

Leather Smart Cover in 5 colors - $69

Availability

The iPad 2 would be available from Apple Stores, AT&T and Verizon. 26 more countries will get Apple iPad 2 from March 25 onwards. It is not surprising that India isn't listed amongst those 26 countries.

Apple iPad 2 will be available from March 11 in U.S and in some 24 other countries from March 25th.

99.7% Of People Still Haven't Bought A Tablet Yet

Business Insider

Apple's iPad tablet is probably the fastest-selling new consumer electronics device ever, but the potential for growth in the tablet market for Apple, Google, RIM and others is still massive.

Only 0.3% of the Earth's inhabitants owned a tablet at the end of 2010, RBC analyst Mike Abramsky notes today in a detailed, 88-page report about the future of the tablet market. That means 99.7% of the people on Earth still haven't bought a tablet yet!

In this chart, Abramsky plots the tiny smartphone and tablet user base (394 million worldwide) versus other market, such as TV subscriptions (600 million), total PCs (1.3 billion), and mobile subscribers (5.1 billion).

Abramsky predicts more than 400 million tablet users worldwide by 2014, including 185 million tablets sold in 2014. But he thinks Google Android, not Apple, will come to lead the market, representing 40% of the 2014 tablet market, versus 34% for Apple, 13% for Microsoft, 8% for BlackBerry, and 5% for HP WebOS.

Apple knocks £100 off iPads as iPad 2 launch approaches

Apple fans who don’t want an iPad 2 will be able to snap up a bargain after the company cut prices on the first generation iPad.

Apple has reduced the price of the first generation of its tablet computer by £100 in preparation for the launch of the new version on March 25. The cheapest iPad now costs £329.

Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/8361093/Apple-knocks-100-off-iPads-as-iPad-2-launch-approaches.html#

The new ipad has a case which

The technology company has also developed a new “smart” case for the iPad 2 which, as well as protecting the large screen, doubles as a stand so people can watch movies with greater ease. The new case hooks on to the hinges of the iPad 2 and folds up into a stand. Users will have to purchase the case separately.
and
18.29/10.29 PST Accessories include a cable that can connect to HDMI and 'smart covers'. Jobs says the original case added weight and thickness so instead there's a colour that covers the screen but also rolls up into a stand. The case is magnetic and puts the iPad to sleep when you put it on and wakes the iPad when you take it off. Nifty.

ODROID-A tablet fits 1366 x 768 res on a 10-inch screen, dual-core Exynos inside transparent shell

Engadget

11x030776f72bf.jpg

Samsung might not have quite enough Exynos 4210 processors to sell a tablet of its own based on that Cortex-A9 dual-core beastie, but it's found a few to hand over to Korean partner Hardkernel for this here ODROID-A reference platform. It's strictly a dev kit, and as such is unlikely to find its way to your local Best Buy any time soon, but we have to admire the specs on offer. First up is the delightfully dense 1366 x 768 resolution, a rare sight on a 10-inch display, followed by a transparent rear panel that bests anything out on the market right now in terms of sheer sex appeal, and then there are also two MicroSD slots, a HSPA+ modem, HDMI output, a USB 2.0 port, cameras on the front and rear, and a crazy 9000mAh battery. How all this is supposed to only cost $750, we don't know, but then we also don't know how to qualify to get one when it becomes available later this month.

Olivepad 2

Android 3.0 Honeycomb Tablet

Olivepad 2 by month end

Nilabh Jha, The Mobile Indian, New Delhi, March 17, 2011

The new Olivepad will be bigger at 10.1 inches; will feature the latest Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS, and a customised user interface. It will be more expensive than the current model.

Olive Telecom, which was the first company to introduce a tablet computer in India, is bringing out a new version of its Olivepad in a bigger, better avatar.

The tablet, the name of which is not known yet (though it may be called Olivepad 2,) will be available in India within the next 15 days.

According to sources it is expected to use a 10.1 inch screen, and the latest Android, version 3.0.

It comes on the heels of the launch of iPad 2 by Apple, which, however, is yet to arrive in India.

Olive is also working on a new user interface, which will give the tablet a distinct look and feel. This is a new move as the current Olivepad uses standard Android with no tweaks.

On the pricing front, while iPad 2 costs the same price as iPad 1, the new Olivepad will be about Rs 5,000 more expensive than the original edition.

Going by the market trend, the new tablet is expected to have a 1 GHz processor. 3G, front and rear cameras, and Wifi connectivity are given, as even the current model has these features.

Olive's products have always been feature rich and since Samsung Galaxy Tab is only slightly more expensive than the new Olivepad, Olive will definitely ensure that its tablet has better specifications than GalaxyTab.

Samsung is also ready to announce the upgrade of Galaxy Tab and it will be interesting to watch how Samsung prices it.

The other reason that should cause Olive some worry is that iPad is now available in the market and prices start at just above Rs 30,000. Though for similar specifications to Olivepad you will need to shell out almost Rs 40,000.

Leaked screen shot indicates that a 16GB version of the Motorola XOOM is on the way

Glancing over a recently leaked screen shot from Verizon’s Device Management system, it indicates that the carrier will be selling a 16GB version of the XOOM – of course, it’ll be enabled for 3G right now, but it’ll get 4G whenever that happens.
