post-8210-0-88073400-1315651239_thumb.jp

The budget tablet market seems to be getting hotter day-by-day. Computer peripherals maker iBall has launched its first Android tablet Slide in the Indian market priced at Rs 13,995.

Sporting a 7-inch capacitive multi-touch display, Slide has a 2 megapixel front camera, USB host and HDMI output.

As for the memory, the tablet will pack 8GB built-in memory which can be expanded up to 32GB.

Powered by 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, the tablet will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. For connectivity, iBall Slide will come with Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G (via Dongle, not built-in).

With 4400 mAh battery, the company claims iBall Slide will offer up to 6.5 hours of music and up to 5 hours of video.

The company has roped in Hrithik Roshan as brand ambassador.

Over the past few weeks, the Indian market witnessed a slew of budget tablet launches. Mercury launched its first Android tablet mTab priced at Rs 9,499. Measuring 19.3 X 11.7 X 1.4 cm, mTab sports a 7-inch WVGA TFT LCD touch display, G sensor screen rotation for 3D G-games and weighs mere 400 grams. GIT Media Group Inc enters the Tablet market with two-mega storage, developer friendly 10-inch Tablets

Many of you are probably saying “Who on earth is GIT Media Group?†I’d probably be in the same position if I didn’t know the guys running the tablet end of this company. GIT have their fingers dipped into many pie’s and not wanting to be outdone by the competition, they decided to get into the hardware game.

A few sites have posted this news today and been skeptic about GIT. In fact, GIT (Graphic Imaging Technology) Media Group is not a new company by any means. They are a private company headquartered in Brooklyn, NY and categorized under Microfilming Service Equipment and Supplies. The information I found show the company was established in 1996 and incorporated in New York. Current estimates show this company has an annual revenue of $1 to 2.5 million and employs a staff of approximately 5 to 9. I’m not sure how old this information is, but it gives a little background to GIT and their potential stability entering this market.

GIT officially informed the world that they have two new Tablets ready for launch and will start pre-selling these devices starting today on the GIT Web Site. People who pre-order will receive a special bonus in the form of a leather case and wireless Bluetooth keyboard or an extended warranty (total 3 years), both valued at $100. This is a limited time offer and ends 10/15/2011.

One BIG bonus, if all things work out as expected, is that GIT is going to try and release the entire source code for these tablets. Obviously there may be some components that may contain proprietary drivers, but they are going to do their best to release everything. Who knows, we might see custom ROMs before the tablets are even hitting the streets!

The two tablets are called the Surge and the Pro. Not the most dynamic names I’ve ever heard before, but as long as the tablets live up the specs, who really cares. One incredibly nice adition to these tablets is the inclusion of a 250GB Seagate internal HD. Yes, that’s right, you’ll never have to worry about running out of storage with these devices.

Here’s what you get for your money! The pictures we’ve been provided with are the same ones shown on the web site and are renders of the actual product. They say that the Renders can hardly be distinguished form the actual products. Both products are identical in almost everyday except for the processor inside. The Surge features a nVidia Tegra 2 and the Pro features the new Samsung Dual Core Exynos 4210 processor found inside the Samsung Galaxy S II. Which according to recent tests, is the fastest processor to date for any device or tablet currently one the market.

The GIT Surge

The specifications for the GIT Surge:

NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core 1GHz Processor

10.1″ 16:9 Touch Screen (1280X768)

Android OS 3.0 (Honeycomb)

250GB Internal HDD

1GB RAM

2MP Front-facing Camera & 5MP Rear Camera

Wi-Fi

GPS

Bluetooth

Built-In Speakers and Microphone

3.5mm Port

USB Port, Micro SD, and Mini USB Port

The GIT Pro

The specifications for the GIT Pro:

Samsung dual-core 1GHz Processor

10.1″ 16:9 Touch Screen (1280X768)

Android OS 3.0 (Honeycomb)

250GB Internal HDD

1GB RAM

2MP Front-facing Camera & 5MP Rear Camera

Wi-Fi

GPS

Bluetooth

Built-In Speakers and Microphone

3.5mm Port

USB Port, Micro SD, and Mini USB Port

Both tablets are priced at $479.99 according to the web site, which is a pretty good deal considering what’s inside these bad boys. When you think that you currently pay about $399 for a 32GB ASUS Transformer and your getting an additional 218gb worth of storage.

On a side note, I have studied the pictures quite extensively and have seen, what appears to be, a mini HDMI port as well. Although it is not mentioned in the specs on the site. There is a possibility that I am incorrect and it is just a micro USB port. Why add a mini USB and a Micro USB side by side though? We will have to wait and see what we can find out about that next time we can get a hold of our friends.

For more information, head over to the GIT Media Group Homepage, get your pre-orders in so you can take advantage of the pre-order special and patiently wait.

Huawei MediaPad Coming to India Next Month, Chetan Bhagat To Promote

Source

huawei-mediapad.jpg

Waiting for Huawei’s first Honeycomb tablet “MediaPad” in India, well the good news is that it will be releasing next month in the country. Huawei has also roped in popular Indian writer Chetan Bhagat to promote it along with other upcoming launches like Android smartphone “Vision”.

“They offered a brand-association in which I had no pressure to say nice things as such, unless I actually liked the product. I liked that concept,” Bhagat told ET.

This association is not limited to just promotion, MediaPad will also come pre-loaded with e-books of Chetan’s books. It is not sure whether we will see his upcoming “Revolution 2020” in the device, but considering the fact that Huawei is the launch partner for Revolution 2020, we might actually see it on MediaPad.

Coming to Huawei MediaPad, it features Android 3.2, 7 inch IPS display, 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor, 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera and 4100mAh battery.

Kindle Fire costs $210 To Make, $199 To Buy, Where is Amazon’s Profit?

Source

The most important question that remained unanswered till now was the cost of manufacturing of Kindle Fire tablet. Companies never reveal such details, but research companies like iSuppli estimate the spending and in this case according to the preliminary figure, Kindle Fire’s bill of materials (BOM) cost at $191.65. With the addition of manufacturing expenses, the total cost to produce the Kindle Fire rises to $209.63.

Kindle_fire_bill.jpg

So, with a spending of around $210, how will Amazon make money when it is going to sell Kindle Fire for just $199. The initial profit or even recovering the cost of manufacturing will come directly from the sale of digital content – e-books, videos, apps and music. Company will also look to sell its Prime membership to its users by first giving a free taste of it along with Fire and then charging $79 of a year’s worth.

According to IHS, the expected sales of digital contents will give Amazon a marginal profit of just $10, but the real money is going to come from the sale of physical goods.

This business model is unique to Amazon. No other tablet brand or e-book reader operates such a broad retail service, which generated $34 billion in revenue in 2010. Conversely no other retailer can offer a tablet specifically designed to promote sales of its goods.

It is similar to the razor-blade model followed by Gillette that sells razors at a loss and makes up the difference from profitable sales of blades later, explained IHS iSuppli Analyst Wayne Lam to Reuters.

But, this is a lot if Amazon is looking to make a profit in these lines and these are some really big expectations as there is no other company that has been able to sell more than the digital content with the help of tablets. Amazon has a big road in front of it and it has what is needed to change the scenario.
