Huawei Unveils MediaPad: world's first 7-inch Android 3.2 tablet, dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm CPU

Huawei just introduced a downright luscious new slate over in Singapore, with CommunicAsia being the launchpad for the 7-inch MediaPad. It's the first high-profile 7-inch tablet we've seen in quite some time, and somehow or another, it's managed to leapfrog most of the currently shipping Honeycomb tablets with a build of Android we've only ever joked about. Huawei tells us that Honeycomb 3.2 is essentially the same as 3.1, but specifically tailored to 7-inch tablets as opposed to 10-inch. Packed within the MediaPad's 10.5mm shell, there's a 217 pixels-per-inch IPS capacitive touchpanel, GPS, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, 802.11n WiFi, a battery good for around six hours of life and a bona fide racehorse as a processor: a dual-core 1.2GHz chip from Qualcomm. If all goes well, it'll ship in the United States in Q3 2011.

It's a fair bit chunkier than the newfangled Galaxy Tab 10.1 (8.6mm), but still slimmer than the original Tab, which clocked in at 11.98mm. It weighs in at 390g (0.86 pounds), supports full 1080p playback, includes HSPA+ (14.4Mbps) 3G support, offers 8GB of internal storage (as well as a microSD slot) and comes pre-loaded with Facebook, Twitter, Let's Golf and Documents To Go. There's also a Bluetooth module, an HDMI output for catching those high-def flicks on the go, and the Flash 10.3 player ensures that those websites won't be a problem. Unfortunately, the company's left a great deal to the imagination -- like pricing, which is being "sorted with retail partners and providers" -- and all we've got for system RAM is a promise that it's "working with partners on specifics." Oddly enough, the company has "no current plans" to produce a WiFi-only model, which definitely puts a damper on those who aren't interested in ponying for carrier data. You can bet we'll be digging for more, but even with the surrounding mystery, calling us "excited" would be a severe understatement.

Yes, this does look good if it has a capacitive screen.

Another not so well known alternative for the adventurous souls is the Nook Color, marketed by Barnes and Nobles as essentially a book reader. However, the hackers quickly found out that it was simple to modify the firmware and turn it into an android netbook. It can run experimental Honeycomb. Main advantage: a super display - comparable to that of ipad (though smaller at 7 inches). It should be about half the price of the cheapest ipad (if you can find it). Disadvantages: Hard to find, NO camera (it was meant to be a book reader) and no microphone (the hacking community has been able to activate limited bluetooth service so a bluetooth microphone may work if you really do need voice input). If you main purpose is to read a lot of documents, this is one nifty machine.

True Archos tablet is awesome price it blows everyone else out of the water, $349+$49 for 250 GB wifi 3G while ipad 2 retails for double the price with less than quarter storage.

I agree the nook color is hugely underrated but now B&N are improving the software ecosystem trying to make it more of a tablet than a reader. Google for details. There are many nook colors selling on XDA marketplace at cheap prices, ofcourse risk involved of online trade but buy through paypal.

The Android 3.1 Honeycomb update for the Acer Iconia Tab A500 has just been released internationally, but will be arriving in India only by the end of this month. According to company representative in India, the reason for the delayed arrival is one that we've heard before – most Indian service providers do not regularly support over-the-air (OTA) updates.

However, it must be noted, a direct download of Acer's update, or desktop-based update software should have been made available instead, quite simply over Wi-Fi, if OTA is so hard. Especially since not all customers would necessarily insert an operator-tied 3G SIM in their device, especially in India, where contract based deals are not so popular. The update, when it arrives, will probably be via a Wi-Fi based method.

Android 3.1 Honeycomb brings a number of improvements over v3.0, including resizable widgets, increased USB peripheral support, improved task manager and app launcher, and more. Refer to our previous coverage for more information. Do also check out our Acer Iconia Tab A500 review.

Hello all,

I wanted to ask people out here whether anyone has used / tried out the Olive Pad VT-100. How has the experience been? Is it worth the 17,000 which is the price at which it is available online? How is the Android OS on the pad? And how is the performance of the GPS and other software which is loaded? I have been given to understand that this is one of the best deals available in the market. Your kind opinions please.

I must say that when it comes to anything thats got to do with multimedia or touchscreen, be it portable media players or tablets, lets just hand this over to Archos. They have proved they are way ahead in this dept. I mean their gen 9 tablets beat both samsung & apple a run for their worth. Considering now you straightaway have a 1.5 GHZ dual core processors complimenting Honeycomb with 250GB (optional) models. Its the ultimate way of enjoying Android on any tablet. Needless to say if its HD movie watching that you are looking for then you got it with plethora of choice at 1080p. It doesnt just end here when you can use the 3g usb stick which seamlessly fits inside these tablets and yet can be taken out to use on your regular laptops. Wow all said, I dont think anybody should waste their precious money and time on any other tablet anymore.

Samsung Launches Galaxy Tab 750, 730 in India

Samsung India today announced the launch Galaxy Tab 750 and 730 in the country. These tablets are not something new but renamed Tab 10.1 and 8.9 respectively. Company has priced Galaxy Tab 730 at INR 33,990 and Galaxy Tab 750 at INR 36,200 for 16GB 3G+WiFi version.

Galaxy Tab 750 features a 1GHz Dual Core processor, 10.1 inch display, and 1GB RAM. Other specifications of the tablet include Touchwiz UI with Android 3.1, 3MP rear and 2MP front cameras, 16GB Internal Storage, Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi, GPS, and 3.5mm headset jack.

On the other hand Galaxy Tab 730 come with the almost the same features as of Tab 750 apart from the screen size which is 8.9 inch.

Data Offer: Samsung has also tied up with Vodafone to offer 3G data usage up to 2GB/month for six months at Rs 3,000 for GALAXY Tab 750/730 owners.

Company has announced that Galaxy Tab 750 will be available by the end of this month, while Tab 730 will come around mid-September.

until tablets reach netbook price points for a given screen size, they will not have any meaningful impact on the market in terms of volumes sold

so if a 10" netbook costs about rs. 15-16 k, that should be the target pricing for a 10" tablet

currently its about double that amount ...

i find them too expensive

despite owning a car and driver so i'm sure the rest of the middle class will also get 'sticker shock' !

rates are around rs. 3 k - 3.5 k per inch and need to reduce by half

rs. 1 k - 2k / inch for tabs

Beetel launches Magiq in India – INR 10K Android Tablet

Beetel has officially launched its Android tablet in India. It has been named “Magiq” and will be available in the market starting next week for a price of INR 9,999.

Beetel Magiq features a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Android 2.2, 7 inch display, 2 MP Rear/Front cameras, 8 GB of internal memory and a 2200 mAh battery. Tablet also offers 3G and WiFi connectivity along with the GSM calling support. Company has also announced that Magiq is upgradable to Android 2.3 in the future.

Data Offer: Airtel is providing bundles data plans with the tablet. Buyers will get free 2GB of 3G data on both prepaid and postpaid connections for 2 months.

If you haven’t noticed till now, Beetel Magiq is actually a rebranded Huawei Ideos S7 tablet with few upgrades.
