Recommended Posts

I am looking for a water purifier system for my home. Have seen ads on tv but have no idea about the mechanisms and the pros and cons of each. Can someone help based on their personal experiences?

First check ur TDS % in water.

If it was more than 300 than go for RO purifier otherwise go for normal purifier.

You don't need to find out TDS Content. High TDS content will be typically in hard water which will not be the case with you since you are living at Delhi.

All mineral RO Water purifiers are an overkill especially for people living in metro cities and who do not receive hard water for the following reasons,

-They are costliest compared to normal water purifiers.

-In the process of eliminating high mineral content from hard water they also remove healthy naturally occuring minerals in water. This natural minerals not only provide a good taste to the water but are also essential for some vital healthy functions of the body.

-They are trypically extremely slow compared to other water purifying mechanisms.

-It wastes a lot of water. Typically 2 to 3 litre for every litre purified.

If the water you receive is not hard, don't go for Mineral RO which is also called Reverse Osmosis.

Any UV Technology Water Purifier having Sediment Filter, Carbon Filter and UV Chamber is more than enough.

One Model is Kent Ultra which i have personal experience as the refillable items are priced economically.

You can also look for other models. Do not go for those Rs. 1500 to 2000 models launched by many companies including Hindustan Lever which work without electricity but are totally useless.

Hope you got enough information for your buying decision.

I am certain that some of you might have seen that advert about the 1 crore challenge (I guess it is pureit water purifiers).

@rajan What do you think about such products? I am unaware of the operational procedures of this water purifier. Are they included in the "1500/- to 2000/- models" mentioned in your earlier post? In fact, I am searching for viable options. The Philips water purifiers seem interesting, likewise. What is your take on them?

Yes. Basically 1500 to 2000 models are pureit and other competing products launched by some companies. As far as Pureit was concerned it was targetted mainly at the lowest strata of society who cannot afford products in the above 5000 range. It had a limited purpose of introducing such segment to atleast some purity of water as compared to none.

Unfortunately they failed massively on the service front. Pureit has a battery which should work for 1500 liters but it actually does not. Also people had to wait for 2 months or more for battery replacement and so the whole purpose of water purifier is lost. Just do a google search for Pureit review and see the horrible experiences. Also visit mouthshut for pureit reviews.

As far as Philips in concerned, their products are always of a certain quality and you are assured on that front. But the problem with Philips is that is is exiting all consumer segments in India. Already they have sold of LCD TV facility and rights to Videocon. Their share in Water Purifier segment is negligible. So you are bound to face service issues later on when they exit Water Purifiers also.

It always makes sense to go for a company which specialises in Water Purifier and whose main business is water purifier. This is a product which you will use for many years and will need regular replacement parts as well as service parts.

So choose from the following which are mainly into Water Purifier Business.

-Kent

-Aqua Guard

-ION Exchange

There may be others which i am not aware of but stick to companies specialising in Water Purifier Business.

I am using 2 units of Kent RO systems; TDS at my residence in Meerut is as high as 6-700 and 1 at my Delhi Res (TDS is about 250 in municipal supply), so its necessity for me; High TDS is the prime cause of all types of Stone problem whether Gall Bladder or Kidney Stones; These Kent systems are little costly and cost about 12-15K

Recently I had to install 1 at my mom-in-laws house at Faridabad; There I experimented; TDS was around 600; The Aquaguard guy there offered to make me an assembled system with all parts same as being used by the top model of Aquaguard (costing about 14K); initially I was sceptical; he offered me the same system for 8K (after exchanging old Aquaguard for 1-1.5K); I found that a value proposition but was hesitant for the quality part; So I instructed him to get me all part checked; The most important part is the RO Membrane Filter (which I used of a good US make company); The 2nd most important part was the Peristaltic Pump (again US make); rest all pre and carbon filters were of Aquaguard; After using since last 3 months my mom-in-law is very satisfied with the quality of water and the overall build and product quality which looks and feel same as any high end system; so I found it a better proposition than my Kent systems or the original Aquaguard.... and all at just 8K with same 1 year warranty and at future home service...

Remember that RO systems should reduce 90%+ of the TDS; so if TDS of untreated water is say 700 then treated water should be 60-70; though most systems reduce it to around 40. The ideal drinking water TDS should be around 100 but that can be compensated by the minerals in your diet specially having a lot of curd which compensates the natural minerals needed by the body. Risking not using RO just because it reduces minerals too much is just not worth taking...

Go for RO without giving it a 2nd thought... Its the future and we use it regularly in all stages of washing and preparation in our pharmaceutical industry also...

Even I am using the HLL pureit 2000 rs model which is going strong. in terms of service i didn't faced any problem in delhi. i got the replacement battery sameday. only problem with these type of product is that plastic quality is not very good so one can easily damage it. otherwise HLL pureit is good.

Philips has India as one of the main targets for water purifier. LCD TV facility is in collaboration with Videocon only for manufacturing and not R&D.

I got a Philips 3890 purifier recently and am happy with the product and customer service. I get corporation water which is not hard and my reason was simple, i wanted No Water if filter runs down.

I am using this purifier for last 10 months. Needs absolutely no zigzig, just you need to clean the filter once a month or so. I live in Pune, where water is bit hard as well as contaminated. This purifier is doing its job wonderfully, and each time I get surprised by the amount of dust it catches. Fully worth its price of Rs.3000.

Specifications as per the site:

_________________________________________________________________

Ultra Filtration Membrane Cartridge (0.01 Micron) manufactured using Patent Technology of BARC Mumbai

Electricity Not Required

Is almost Maintenance free except occasional cleaning of superfine solids deposited on the surface. This doesn’t take more than 5 minutes.

Membrane life approx 3-5 years (Though are warranty stands for 1 year)

Removes Complete Turbidity to produce Crystal Clear Water

Acid wash Activated Carbon Removes foul odor from the water

Acts as dead end device and so not even a single drop of water is wasted

Uses 5 Micron Pre filter to remove Coarser impurities

Removes 99.99% Bacteria

Foul Odor and Polish the Water

Removes Bacteria and Suspended Materials (Turbidity)

One Year Warranty

"Removes 99.99% Bacteria". But what about viruses? Not good enough if it can't deal with that.

In my opinion too "Eureka Forbes" is the best. Having no problems with their services also. Each time we call them and their person visits us within 48 hours normally and within 24 hours if need to rectify the problem urgently. Eureka Forbes seems to be number one in water purifying systems. :)

Same situation, similar product..

We get Cauveri (Corporation water) so this line of Philips purifiers does the job..

They look classy & not very expensive.. http://www.purewater...uct_wp3892.aspx

Im using 3892 with intellifill pre-set water so you dont need to stand there on one leg for minutes together while filling a medium/big vessel.

The 3893 model comes with additional battery backup - may not be very important.

Second advantage is that Filter changing in these models are surprisingly easy & cheaper compared to Aquaguard where you will pay for labour.. good one from philips.

And as always, i would advise ppl to buy this from CROMA with 2 yrs extended warranty for Rs. 300-400 extra !

Usually Croma loots, but this one comes at a reasonable price in their showrooms..

So min. 4 yrs peace of mind..
