Alcatel mobiles have not been successful at all in India. It's a dead brand. Wish they had chosen a better Company.

I differ. If O2, Asus, i-Mate, HP, Acer,BenQ, Pantech, Toshiba, Sharp or Palm are not as successful as Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Micromax, hTc or ZTE in India, they can not be termed as bad companies at all. Success of handsets in India depends on many factors.

Alcatel is a successful brand in USA.

previous.gif +100 to that. Just because something sells more (in some part), it does not mean its necessarily the best for everyone. Thats like saying Airtel is the biggest operator, so it should be the best option for everyone in India. GirandoOjos.gif

I had an Alcatel handset in 2000 to 2004. It had awsome reception and voice clarity and also the option to use 3 AAA alkaline batteries in emergency when the battery is discharged.

Like a politician, i would say i was misquoted!! Lol

No actually what i meant to say was the following,

-Alcatel as of today has almost zero presence in india as far as handsets are concerned. So there will be associated problems like service etc. Secondly, if the product is very good, it is rarely the case that it will not succeed. It is not the case that Alcatel has never entered India. It did, tried and then wound up. When you are such a huge company worldwide but still are unable to succeed in a huge market like india, it says a lot about your products. Moreover Alcatel is very strong at enterprise level telecom products. It was never a significant company at the consumer level.

-I have used not 1 or 2 but more than 10 Alcatel handsets either personally or through my company to other people. Every one of them had issues within less than 6 months.

-I have also used more than one Alcated Cordless phones. One died within 2 months. Another within 3 months. After running around entire Mumbai and to their Service Center, it could not be repaired. This was officially purchased from Croma. Ultimately i gave this to my raddiwala for Rs.20 per piece as plastic bhangar.

-How is Asus not successful in India. It is the top motherboard brand. HP is in Top three for PC,Servers and Printers. Acer as of today is in top 2 for Laptops. Benq is very strong in Monitor which is the segment they focus. Toshiba is strong in enterprise notebooks and in consumer electronics like LCD TV which it started focussing seriously since last 6 months, it is making rapid strides. Sharp is doing good business in Copiers and MFD's. Pantech and Palm is not present in India. Moral of the story, if your product is good, you will succeed.

-Docomo is actually revered in Japan for the fantastic handsets they introduce carrying features which are introduced there first and then the world follows. Actually when Tata Docomo was launched, one of the first statement made by senior management was that they are looking forward to introduce Docomo's legendary handsets in India. It is in this context i am disappointed their launching a handset that too an Alcatel not different from many Chinese QWERT phones.

Just because a product is good, does not mean it will "succeed". Success, depending on how you define it depends on a LOT of other factors too. I have see a lot of good to excellent products not succeeding because they probably failed on other fronts (besides quality).

Rajan might have missed one important word 'handsets' which I uttered while commenting on the success or failure of brands in our country. Otherwise he wouldn't be required to take so much of pain in describing success of these brands in electronics industry. Asus, HP, BenQ, Acer, Sharp, Toshiba are no doubt leaders in their respective fields, but not at all successful handset sellers in India.

Rajan should know that Pantech and Palm are very much in India. Their presence can be checked from here and here. For Pantech there were some CDMA sets like PA 711 or PA 715SC also which were very much in TataIndicom's stable. Palm succumbed to Microsoft's popularity in smartphone's OS market and rolled out their Windows Mobile Palm Treo which was here being officially launched by AirTel (check it from here). Kyocera's 7135 which was a flagship CDMA smartphone launch by Dhirubhai Ambani ran on Palm OS (check it here). It didn't have many takers like TataIndicom's Windows 2003SE phone HTC Konquer.

One can have bitter experience with one particular product or brand, that doesn't necessarily generalize that brand's quality. Some of my friends have similar bad experience with even Nokia and Motorola.

So, no moral story please....
