rsalecha 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2010 Dell has just launched its smartphone-tablet device Streak in India. Arriving with a bang, the Dell Streak would be sold in India for a whooping Rs. 34,990. This device is available with Tata DoCoMo post paid connection with 500MB Free data connection usage for the first six months. This tablet-smartphone has a 5-inch multi-touch supporting capacitive display. Running Android 1.6 mobile op, the Dell Streak is expected to get Android 2.2 Froyo update before the end of this year. Streak's surprise arrival might shake Samsung Galaxy Tab's launch which is due any time this month. Amongst the hustle of Apple iPad and the freshly announced Samsung Galaxy Tab, the new Dell Streak makes an early official entry to lure the Indian consumers. A blend of tablet with smartphone, Streak can actually make and receive voice calls. The 5-inch capacitive multi-touch supporting Gorilla glass screen offers 800x480 pixel resolution. Its Gorilla glass screen offers high-quality crystal clear image and is scratch-resistant. Dell has added ultra-intelligent facial proximity and ambient light sensors that auto-adjust the screen brightness and also save the battery life accordingly. The Dell Streak houses 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 processor along with 512MB ROM and 512MB SDRAM. For the shutterbugs, Streak carries a 5 megapixel auto focus camera with dual LED flash and a VGA front facing camera. A video chat function, to make the best of front facing VGA video camera, is on the anvil. The tablet will also have 2GB internal storage that is meant only for file system and OS. Yes, Dell Streak runs Android 1.6 which is a bit surprising but the company promises to release Android 2.2 Froyo for it soon. Last month, UK based Dell Streak owners received Android 2.1 update. Take a look at basic specifications of the Dell Streak: Sharp 5-inch capacitive multi-touch Gorilla glass WVGA (800 480) display 1GHz Snapdragon ARM-based mobile processor from Qualcomm UMTS / GPRS / EDGE class 12 GSM radio with link speeds of HSDPA 7.2 Mbps / HSUPA 5 MP auto focus camera with dual LED flash VGA front-facing camera enables video chat functionality down the road User-removable (and replaceable) battery 3.5mm headphone jack Integrated 3G + Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) + Bluetooth 2.1 (think headsets, external keyboards, stereo headsets, etc.) Micro SD slot expandable up to 32GB. The one thing we aren't sure about is whether the Streak will offer turn-by-turn directions with Street View through Google Maps app in India. Tata DoCoMo Post Paid account holders will get 500MB free per month data usage for the first six months. Hopefully, when 3G is launched in India, more users would be able to enjoy faster mobile web on the tablet. Dell is considering 7-inch and 10-inch tablet computers as well. The Dell Streak would be available for pre-booking at Dell Exclusive Stores, Tata DoCoMo Dive In Centers and authorized retailers. With the arrival of Dell Streak, all eyes are now set on Samsung Galaxy Tab and Apple iPad tablets to be launched here officially. As of now, we know that the price of 7-inch display bearing Galaxy Tab would be somewhere around Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 40,000. It is speculated that the Apple iPad might be launched officially for a higher price than that in India. Even though, there are no signals of Apple iPad's official launch in India, it is available for about Rs. 32,000 to Rs. 36,000 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model. In the coming weeks, we'll see that the competition between tablets will get fierce. If you are confused about which one is the best for you, check out our detailed comparison here. sougatadc 358 Report post Posted October 5, 2010 Affordable compared to HP Slate or Ipad but costly compared to Binatone HomeSurf which is sub 9K. I want to know how to use wireless broadband modems (Photon+, NetConnect, MTS Blaze or BSNL EVDO) on these droid tablets. Can anybody suggest where the drivers of these devices are available? sougatadc 358 Report post Posted October 7, 2010 ^^^ This is a built-in HSDPA (GSM 3G) device. EVDO is CDMA based. What will the numerous subscribers of EVDO based wireless BB from Reliance, Tata, MTS or BSNL do? Avoid this Dell tablet? There are drivers for Windows, Linux or Mac. No way? commonman 228 Report post Posted October 7, 2010 (edited) ^^^ The only feasible option for the moment would seem to be a wifi router compatible with USB data cards Else get a tablet device thats EVDO based. Edited October 7, 2010 by commonman

sougatadc 358 Report post Posted October 8, 2010 (edited) ^^^ The only feasible option for the moment would seem to be a wifi router compatible with USB data cards Else get a tablet device thats EVDO based. Why don't they provide drivers for android. BSNL, Reliance, MTS or Tata should provide drivers for android immediately. Now the heated competition is on the tablet segment. There will be a major launch from Microsoft (of window 95 fame ) shortly. There are cheap tablets galore. After Binatone HomeSurf, it is Zine ePad @ Rs7999/-. Check the attached advt on today's TI.
