digitalnirvana 646 Report post Posted May 23, 2011 Agree with CM and Dkaile that Toshiba is very good rugged product though underrated in India, in UK Toshiba is quite popular after HP, so is Fujitsu in low cost category.
Sadik 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2011 Hi Everyone again. I am looking to buy another Laptop. What I have in mind are these specs AMD Processor, preferably better than Athlon Dual Core, but that will do. 14'' Screen 3GB DDR3 RAM I am looking at a budget if below 25K. Can someone suggest a good model. Last time thanks to Rajan Mehta, I bought this great Toshiba L640 which is sadly no longer available in market in Kolkata. rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted June 3, 2011 Hi Sadik, This time Intel Core i3 & i5 prices have gone down substantially and at a sweet/similar spot to AMD.... So makes sense to go for it... Take your pick from any of the following... Toshiba C660 INTEL CORE I3 PROCESSOR Rs 23,390 http://cgi.ebay.in/w...#ht_6713wt_1249 Asus A43E Rs 25,990 http://cgi.ebay.in/w...5#ht_4831wt_938 Lenovo Z460- Intel Core i3-390M Rs 26,990 http://cgi.ebay.in/w...8#ht_5575wt_965 Acer Aspire 5742 Notebook With 500GB HDD 2GB RAM Rs 27,990 http://cgi.ebay.in/w...#ht_4404wt_1139
Sadik 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2011 Hi Rajan bhai Thanks again for the great references. However the thing is this laptop is for my wife. Now she insists she will not buy a laptop with screen size more than 14 inch. So all 15.6 inch laptops are out. I thought AMD would come at a lower cost hence the AMD preference. Also 3 GB so that performance is good. Now these two look good. But both have 2 GB RAM. http://cgi.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180674754835#ht_4831wt_938 http://cgi.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300562452568#ht_5575wt_965 I also found these two, but can't locate them on ebay. http://www.gadgetsguru.in/compaq-presario-cq41-221au-price-specification-buy-india-10108.aspx http://www.flipkart.com/computers/laptops/samsung/itmcyswyewppxqeb?pid=comcwaucnfpuxfuy Are there any others I am missing? Thanks again...
rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted June 3, 2011 Benefit of having a 15.6" Screen is that you may get a better keyboard & In some models, you also get separate number key pad which helps greatly while working with spreadsheets. And there really isn't a huge difference with weight, size between a 14" & 15.6". More of a mental block. Can understand if the choice is between 15.6" & a 10" netbook. Try your luck in explaining her the LOGIC. A daunting task with any lady, more so if she's your own.. Also don't eliminate 2GB models outright because one slot will be avilable for adding more RAM. By doing so you may restrict your choice in a better VFM model.. And do you have a BUDGET in mind OR money no bar becuase it's for the lady luck!!! Will provide further input when things are clear... First off, love the smilies! Well I guess I can try to convince her about the 15.6 inch thing. The budget is 25K. Any idea how much a 1GB DDR3 RAM costs, because I can then purchase a 2GB model and ADD ram if things remain within budget!
rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted June 3, 2011 Two good choices... 1. Toshiba Satellite C Series C660-P5012 at Rs 20,320 http://www.flipkart....ff-d3f890c5b78d 2. Toshiba C660 INTEL CORE I3 PROCESSOR at Rs 23,390 http://cgi.ebay.in/w...#ht_6713wt_1249 Both are mostly similar except the processor... Essentially you will be paying around Rs 3,000 more for that which frankly does not make sense unless of course there is an app specific more power requirement. 1st one has been bought by Dhirajbhai and he is pretty happy about it's performance running Win 7 Ultimate even on stock 2GB Ram. For normal usage 1st one should suffice. Can add 2 GB DDR3 RAM which will cost approx Rs. 1,200 to make it 4GB in either of the above.
Sadik 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2011 Those two look like fantastic options. I think we will go for Toshiba Satellite C Series C660-P5012 and add a 2 GB RAM to it. That should make for a very good Laptop performance wise too. I will be going to the market tomorrow to see if someone can improve the Flipkart rate of Rs 20,

Venkatagiri 53 Report post Posted June 4, 2011 Hi Everyone again. I am looking to buy another Laptop. What I have in mind are these specs AMD Processor, preferably better than Athlon Dual Core, but that will do. 14'' Screen 3GB DDR3 RAM I am looking at a budget if below 25K. Here is what I found for you Sadik, Compaq Presario CQ42-451TU Intel® Pentium® P6200 2 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 (1 x 2 GB) Supports up to 8 GB DDR3 memory (Phew) 320 GB SATA (5400 rpm) DVD RW 14.0" High-Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display 1 VGA port 1 HDMI port 1 stereo headphone-out 1 microphone-in 3 USB 2.0 ports 1 RJ45 ethernet port 5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader for Secure Digital cards, MultiMedia cards, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro or xD Picture cards Webcam Altec Lansing Speakers Weight 2.20 kg MRP Rs21860 + Taxes Link: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/in/en/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-3329742-89318-89318-4346196-5040879.html
Sadik 0 Report post Posted June 4, 2011 Thanks a lot Venkat for the suggestion! That machine also looks fantastic... but I am afraid it's a little late! I bought today Toshiba C660-P5012 ! Again Thanks very much to Rajan bhai. It's now the second great machine I have bought on your advice! So, the Toshiba shop here charged 19500+5%Vat+1500 Rs for 2 GB extra RAM (ya RAM me thoda jyada kharcha kar diya, i should have bargained it's price) So they charged me a total to 21800 Rs. That's for an excellent Toshiba machine with 4GB now! I just finished installing all the programs for the Mrs. and the laptop is really fast. It seems faster than my AMD Athlon II Dual Core L640 M04010, but that may be because this one is new and mine has been going on for many months now.

sgiitk 32 Report post Posted June 5, 2011 Watch out for Acer batteries. I have an Acer 3810T and the second battery ha just died on me (2 years). My son has the same and is currently on his fourth battery. A colleague has had a couple pack up as well. Acer said that the early batteries (pre Sept 2009) had problems, but after that it seems to be still there.
csmart 472 Report post Posted June 10, 2011 one of my friends is getting a laptop for him and myself from US. i need to help in finalising the specs. i thought of following: - Intel iCore 5 (2nd Generation preferred) - 500 GB HDD - Min 3GB RAM - max 14" LCD (if budget permits then LED) - 1GB Graphic card - Brand: Any (but no Compaq) - Budget: Rs 35000/- (+/- 10%) - Good battery life pls provide link to your suggestions. i need good battery life. Check this on best buy... this is not 2nd generation core.
rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted June 10, 2011 ^ ^ ^ Why bother for US.. Get this one right here in india.. Exceeds most of your specs, fits your budget.. sgiitk 32 Report post Posted June 10, 2011 (edited) I would not look to the US. Warranty is invalid in India. I am not aware of many laptops which did not need attention in Year 1 itself. The only recent one I can recall is a Toshiba! Edited June 10, 2011 by sgiitk
csmart 472 Report post Posted June 10, 2011 i dont agree with you doctor. international warranty is available for the most brands and in the past i've purchased many from different countries and never had problem with any warranty. Toshiba is no doubt good but others are also there. laptops are like any other electronics and if you are unlucky can go bad any time..
sgiitk 32 Report post Posted June 10, 2011 (edited) @csmart; So did we think. My daughter had a Compaq. Went to the UK, had a breakdown. The reply was that since that particular model is not for sale in the UK take it back to India. I told her to reveal that she is a lawyer, and threaten them. She was doing a LLM in criminal justice. She got a reply pronto to take the unit to a facility right on the campus. The laptop was fixed in three days flat with change of the motherboard (which they got from Germany). This was just before Xmas. There are more holes in the so called International Warranty than in Swiss cheese. Have you ever read the 15-20 pages of it? I was talking to an CEO of a listed co. He happened to check the terms and declined the warranty extensions in the US. replaced the Acer battery (See post 92) with a third party battery - 4400mAH against 5600mAh. Has a one year warranty. Half the price. Let me see how long this lasts. Edited June 13, 2011 by sgiitk
csmart 472 Report post Posted June 11, 2011 what you say may be correct in some part. i got my toshiba from singapore and replaced its DVD drive in India. I just showed them email and they replaced it.
