Fly CG588 is a dual SIM (GSM+CDMA) device priced at Rs 4,795. It is pre loaded with Fly Buzz! An app which helps users stay connected on multiple popular platforms including Facebook, Twitter, etc., at speeds of up to 153 Kbps. Prem Kumar, chief executive officer, Meridian Telecom, India, said, "The dual SIM capabilities of the phone, offering both CDMA and GSM operation, is not just a strong USP in metropolitan cities, but is also highly appreciated in tier two and tier three towns." Sunil Batra, president, CDMA operations, TTSL, said, "The phone has an ergonomic QWERTY keyboard and makes for easy navigation, communication and internet access." Fly CG588 is bundled with offers for both voice and data usage. With a first recharge of Rs 104, customers get 1 GB of free data usage, 250 local on net minutes, 250 local off net minutes and 250 SMSs worth Rs 1,500. So, why invest on a device which will not be used? The users at big cities only can have the option of EVDO. But in not-so big cities and innumerable small towns, 1X is the only option. BSNL has coverage around 200 cities/towns. Not all operators coverage is mutually inclusive. In India, there are 39732 postal codes (PIN codes). If we consider on an average 3 PINs in a locality, that gives a whopping 13244 towns/cities. India is a very big country, and its population is even bigger. EVDO coverage is not only negligible, statistically it is beyond reach of most of the mobile user masses both geographically and on monetary count. EVDO on mobile will remain a thing of the rich people for next few years. The crores of mobile users who save money to buy mobile handsets and recharge coupons will not be able to use EVDO/3G in near future. BSNL's EVDO is not for mobile phones. kesav 127 Report post Posted October 23, 2010 (edited) I feel and hope within next 2 years, all the CDMA BTSes in the country to be breathing EVDO Rev. A. So coverage-wise, it is not a worry at all. Regarding the cost of EVDO handset, day by day it's becoming cheaper, it has already reached below Rs. 5000 mark. One and only way we can peneretrate broadband in India is through broadband in mobile. For that purpose, 3G(EVDO or HSDPA or both) enabled handsets are must. In the present context, any handset above Rs. 3000 must have EVDO or HSDPA as the case may be. BSNL's EVDO is not for mobile phones. It's a an old story. sougatadc 358 Report post Posted October 23, 2010 Strongly promoting! BSNL officers in most of the places have not even heard about EVDO on mobiles. It will be like their 3G venture. After spending crores of rupees on 3G network, BSNL has little more than 7 lakh subscribers all over the country after almost 2 yrs' of its launch and it is less than what MTNL has in two circles.
