Mobile Number Portability service from November 25

Recommended Posts

:previous:

This is what exactly I'm expecting out of the cartel(Airtel, Vodafone & Idea).

They're feeling fire under belly that too with DOCOMO 3G launch.

:Contento::Contento::Contento::Contento:

The reasons given out by them as quoted in the article is quite flimsy and totally ridiculous.

Hope DoT is not so insane to accpet these idiotic reasons.

Read this topic to know how same cartel is working against BSNL roll-out as reported to Prime Minister by its unions.

Sire, It has been a well known fact that there will be no number portability outside your telecom circle.

Excellent find!!!!!! If the above article is true then it is good riddance to roaming charges!!!!!!!!! :) But I am sure the operators would fight tooth and nail against this policy. After all it is going to affect their bread and butter badly

Very good find my dear friend.

Everyone here in Rimweb are aware about only intra-circle MNP.

COAI director general Rajan S Mathews said, “All the intra-circles will be competed by 30 November. Inter-circle for Haryana will also be completed. So the next phase is inter-circle, that is circle-to-circle.. that will commence on 1 December.”

This is really very interesting news and let us pray it to be true.

If TRAI has mandated that operators cannot charge more than Rs. 19 and if operators are charging for SMS to 1900, then it clearly means they are violating rules. Anyway, I guess we can cry foul only after it is officially implemented.

It took 3 days for BSNL to send me the code for portability of my postpaid number. Today I received the code. This shows BSNL is ready at out place (West Bengal).

Mostly those codes are valid for ONE day only... So check with the date it was sent.. May be the code may not be valid, when you received..

Charging Rs. 10 for SMS is their last loot because they will not get the chance to loot the customer once they shift to other operator :rofl_200:

Yes, I don't believe them. They sent only the code, no date, nothing else. I was just checking whether it is there or not. At the time of real porting, I'll go the BSNL office and do it there on their system. I'll not take chance. Whenever I'll be allowed to port, I'll not wait.

Over 60% Users Unhappy with their Mobile Operator

In a survey conducted by Techtree, a majority of the audience wishes to switch their service provider once number portability is implemented

With delays after delays of number portability for cell phone users in India, at this stage we're given a date of November 25 for its commencement in the state of Haryana. As usual, we wanted to give a platform to Techtree readers to get vocal about their disappointment. So, we thought of conducting a poll to see how many people actually would want to switch after it eventually (and hopefully) does get implemented. A staggering 63 percent folks said Yes. This goes to show a large mass of people who are currently dissatisfied with their current cell phone operator for reasons we assume could range from poor network reception to unfavorable rate plans to poor customer service (maybe even all three). The only reason they wait for MNP is so that they don't have to change their number.

113383_opinionpollresult.jpg

On a positive note, 34 percent voters said they're happy with their mobile operator and would not want to switch to another. A minor 3 percent ultra-frustrated folk said that they're tired of waiting for MNP and would rather give up their existing number and switch to another operator anyway. So, is changing numbers such a big deal? For some, its just about sending a bulk SMS informing everybody in their phone-book and getting it over with. But for the majority of voters, it doesn't seem to be that simple a deal.

Techtree reader Rahul from Mumbai pointed out an interesting angle. He says that he falls in a separate category and feels others could also be in a similar dilemma. Rahul said, "I am fed up with my current operater, but the others are equally bad so i am not sure about changing."

Will someone who has ported successfully give the full sequence of operations.

Let us say you want to port from A to B.

Then I guess you will have to do the paperwork with B and get a SIM (or is that only required in the CDMA > GSM case, and a RUIM the other way round). Then probably the sms for the port and then somehow get the code into the new chap. Please elaborate in detail. Many of us will be most grateful. What happens to i. the plans, and ii. the deposit (some of us with old connections had paid significant deposit amounts).

Unless you are desperate to dump your service provider prudence says that wait for a month or two for the system to stabilise, before using it.

I agree in totality.

If you like the number but are not satisfied by the servie provider then and then only the changing system will be beneficial..

After porting nothing much else can be done till now... as MNP has not been fully implemented even till today..

@ all - the grass aint that green on the other side either... you will realise that when you port to the new service provider...

Telcordia Tech secures FIPB nod to manage mobile number portability

New Delhi: The foreign investment promotion board (FIPB) has finally approved US-based Telcordia Technologies proposal to function as one of the two clearing houses for managing number portability in the country. Interestingly, the development comes at a time when US President Barrack Obama is on a visit to India. The approval to Telcordia also comes at a time when mobile number portability (MNP) is set to be implemented across the country in a phased manner from November 25.

The home ministry has put forward security conditions on Telcordia, and these are similar to those which telecom vendors importing software and hardware equipment have to follow. Accordingly, Telcordia would have to deposit its software and hardware code in a government-controlled escrow account.

The companys case had seen delay because of security reasons, since the company operates in Pakistan as well. Earlier, the US national security advisor had met home minister P Chidambaram and apprised him that Telcordias operations in Pakistan are in the nature of providing vendor services, which are quite different from what the company plans to do in India.

Telcordias proposal has secured a clearance two years after the first deliberation on the proposal took place and the FIPB had rejected the case in September. However, in the meeting held last week, the proposal finally got cleared, with the home ministry putting forward the security conditions.

The country has been split into two zones for managing MNP. Syniverse Technologies India and MNP Interconnection, a joint venture between US-based Telcordia Technologies and Deepak Talwar Consultants, would act as the clearing houses in the respective zones to manage porting activities.

The home ministry had attached a rider that none of the staff of the US-based telecom firm who have worked in Pakistan at any point of time, can be employed in Indian operations. It had also said that the CEO of the Indian arm, a 74:26 JV between Telcordia Technologies and Deepak Talwar Consultants, will have to be an Indian. Indian regulations do not allow more than 74% foreign holdings in any firm that offers communications and related services.

It's one of the positive news which I've ever posted or read in always dark(filled with cynical and pessimistic posts) MNP thread.

It's really a great news for east and south India who will come under Telcordia.
