amol0010 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2004 I am sick and tired of the very crappy connections provided by the ISP's in india under the fallacious title of broadband. Take for example sify- it provides a pathetic 32 kbps speed for a hefty 1000 rs. This is really insane. This should stop now. Broadband is minmum 256 kbps connection. No ISP in india provices that. Reliance claims to change the meaning of broadband in india. I heard this a couple of years ago and i havent seen anything being put into action so far. So is this only a hype and not a reality ? From what i have seen from the ISPs so far in india, i would cynically say that even reliance will put up download limits like other ISPs, which truely robs the customer the joy of real broadband. Even african countries have better ISPs than india. India shining my butt.
raccoon 53 Report post Posted September 16, 2004 Forget broadband, even regular dial-ups leave a lot to be desired. I had a horrid experience with VSNL and had to put up with them for a year. The main problem is awfully slow connections ...and quite expensive too! Now I have BSNL ...speeds are bit better and is cheaper than VSNL but there are other problems - ghastly customer service and connection problems, etc! Had Dishnet before that and that was nothing to rave about either. Many ISP which came out couple of years ago (like BPL, etc) have simply closed shop! So not much choice either... The Indian ISP scenario like its mobile counterpart leaves a whole lot to be desired.
zeus 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2004 I fink its not a hype. the reason is that apart from net , its also gonna offer tv n that requires bandwidth . The same box is to be used for net , so atleast we are looking at around the 1mbps range .. which is enuff to kick most of these so called broadband isp's out of business

wastedtime 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2005 Well guys i just want to know why we cannot have good net speeds in India , I am using Sify broadband where they claim to give me a 96Kbps connection with no download limits but sify always caps off my speed after a fixed amout of time , they are charging me Rs 995 for this connection which i feel is a total rip-off. I had recently been to singapore where my cousins had a 1.5mbps connection with no data transfer limits and it was extremely consistent. all they paid was about Rs 1600. Well can ne one tell me why we cannot have such connections even though everyone seems to be talking about india emerging as a global IT market etc etc.
rEdshiFt 1 Report post Posted January 8, 2005 good question buddy... why indeed? the more basic a question gets, the more tougher is the answer gonna be...so said someguy. i donno "the" answer... im gonna be eagerly watchin this thread... i would luv to know "why"... its gonna be one dirty mix of reasons from non-existant policies to bad bureacracy to not-yet-started-infrastructure to even non-existant demands ! whatever....i think i'll stay away from broadband till the market-to-come hots up and the d/l caps go. linuxguy 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2005 (edited) here is the answer: Our Indians companies are F****** RETARDS! Today, for some reason I had a look at yahoo broadband services in the US. They provide a 1.5Mbit DSL connection at $26.95pm with no hidden charges. Installation and DSL modem are free with the package. And obviously, unlimited downloads are implied. $26.95pm translates into 1,183.51 INR according to todays conversion rates . IMAGINE THESE RATES IN THE US! I mean the cost of living is VERY VERY high compared to India. So if the same connection would be available in India for the same price then I would grab it with both hands! As for the major bandwidth owners in India: 1. VSNL 2. Reliance 3. Tata These guys buy their bandwidth from God knows where! I dont know about VSNL and Reliance, but I know these guys have a LOT of bandwidth and they are just not releasing it for the common user! As for Tata, they have just pocketed 11,000TBits(yes thats 11,000 TERA BITS!!!) of UNLIT bandwidth. Unlit means they have 11000TBits of bandwidth REMAINING to be used. While they have a lot of bandwidth in use as of now. You may ask where the hell is all this bandwidth going? The answer is Call Centres!! Yes, they use VOIP for cheap communications. Right now these guys are like cell phone companies in the mid 90s when they used to charge like Rs.25/min for out going calls and Rs.22 or something for incoming calls. They are earning huge profits right now. But this sector needs some serious competition. We need to have more players. Give us more bandwidth and more speed!!! We need DEDICATED BROADBAND companies which use DSL, ADSL, WiFi, Cable etc... technologies. Right now we are seeing telecom companies giving us internet. But that is NOT right. These companies are mostly GSM and CDMA, incase of RIL or TATA. The technologies used are bull****. I recently did a bandwidth check on my 64Kbps connection and the bandwidth report commented that my bandwidth was poor and it was slower than the slowest modem connection in the US.... Oh, and did you know that now 256Kbps connections are no longer available in the US? They get only 384Kbps or 512Kbps as the minimum speed And did you know that China has doubled its bandwidth in the last 1.5 years? It has built so much IT infrastructure in that 1.5year which is equivalent to the IT infrastructure it built from 1990 to 2002. rEdshiFt 1 Report post Posted January 10, 2005 Right now these guys are like cell phone companies in the mid 90s when they used to charge like Rs.25/min for out going calls and Rs.22 or something for incoming calls. thats worth remembering.... i'll jus lay low...no broadband for me now...under the current circums, i might even settle for the 28 kbps airtel/gprs 600 monthly scheme !!...its got no d/l limit. some broadband. deepu 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2005 RedShift.... With that sort of speed, you will not be able to download even 5GB in a month... that is even if you use 24/7 Certainly not worth using
rEdshiFt 1 Report post Posted January 10, 2005 I know dude.... but its not like we have many options..... personally, i would prefer unlimited transfer to speed (considering the "fastest" available options and its charges CURRENTLY)

deepu 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2005 Reliance BroadBand does look good, but even they have a download limit of 10 GB... Well can cross that easily if you are a heavy downloader..... Otherwise its OK..
linuxguy 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2005 deepu, 10GB download limit it MUCH better than BSNL's 1GB and MTNL's 250MB
rEdshiFt 1 Report post Posted January 11, 2005 I would happily settle for 10 gb/month from RIL BB....except, we dont have the service started yet in my town - coimbatore
wastedtime 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2005 (edited) Its true Guys BROADBAND inIndia still seems to be a distant dream to me.
