gaurangbhartia 19 Report post Posted November 5, 2010 (edited) Hello Every1, I was just reading in a topic, that people wanted a Poll for best OS. Here is a Comparison between : Ubuntu & Windows 7 http://www.tuxradar.com/node/33 However, we cannot judge the OS solely on performance. We also have to give into practical considerations such as Programs/Software available, GUI experiance etc. I will try to update the post with a comparison if it is feasable on certain practical topics... Till then ... Just vote for your favorite OS and post the reason so other people can know ... Edited November 6, 2010 by gaurangbhartia

gaurangbhartia 19 Report post Posted November 5, 2010 My vote for XP. Reason : All the legacy app and programing apps work seemlessly. Other than that, I would have voted for Ubuntu.

KumaarShah 143 Report post Posted November 5, 2010 My vote goes to W7 - the boot time is considerably faster than with XP. I have never tried out the geeky Linux series.... Not that I am not inclined to do it, but I do not have the patience and the time and energy for trying out vague things....
sougatadc 358 Report post Posted November 5, 2010 (edited) Win7. Its fast and not nagging like XP. Doesn't require installation of many drivers. Search option is also very good. I haven't used Ubuntu. I'm required to use RedHat in my office, but I don't find it as user friendly as Windows. Plug-n-play is difficult (because of driver scarcity). Honest 836 Report post Posted November 5, 2010 My vote goes for XP. Although I liked Windows 7 also, but some of my much needed applications doesn't work on Windows 7. Thats why I like XP for its Stability and Compatibility.

Harshal 11 Report post Posted November 6, 2010 Win 7, just because both my laptops came preloaded with licensed versions. I am still to explore the Ubuntu fully. Had breifely installed it for a while on an XP PC. But there were obvious issues with certain software such as the accounting software that would not work with it. So had to revert back to XP. But have since moved on to GnuCash. For personal use point of view I don't think there is any other software that is a showstopper to prevent me going to Ubuntu. Come to think of it, Windows Live Mesh may be one of it. I am quite used to it now. But I guess there are Ubuntu alternatives as well. Just need to figure out if cross syncing of data is possible - between Ubuntu and Windows PC - with use of a online storage. If so, I'll try out Ubuntu on a spare laptop. viper_in_blood 4 Report post Posted November 6, 2010 my vote will go with xp coz windows 7 has a harrowing problem of getting locked up as soon as i install a cracked version,, secondly some of the software compatiblity still lies with xp better than windows 7. As for unbuntu i tried my hands on it once.....removed it the very next hr..as i was awestruck up with my gud old windows xp.

rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted November 8, 2010 Windows XP is my choice. I use Windows 7 as well as Ubuntu. WIndows 7 is quite reliable, fast and generally much safer than Windows XP. Still i don't like the file explorer interface of Windows 7. Ubuntu has now matured to a stage where you actually don't require much knowledge of linux to start using it. Is is mostly plug & Play with all standard hardware and best part is it is free. Live CD Option is the best when you want to use it for just browsing. No need to install. Just put in the Live CD and it is ready to go. Moreover no need to install anti virus and firewalls. It just works beautifully without it.
thilak.kmb 19 Report post Posted November 9, 2010 I voted for Ubuntu because of its speed and convenience. Day in and day out we use XP at the office but that is different. In all my systems (3dt & one lt)I have atleast two OS and by default they go to linux. I have tried almost all the linux distros at one time or the other. I had to reinstall XP alteast three times due to wrong methods used while installing linux. But finally when you learn it is sweet. Most of us vote between XP and W7. That means other OSes are not tried. The world is very big with many choices.

ani_meher 42 Report post Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) Win7 for sure. I never went for Vista, didn't think it was worth an upgrade from XP. Even XP I was using with old windows theme only. Windows 7 is a real upgrade, with everything working smoothly. I tried Linux many times in past, but each time the learning curve failed me. SOme thing or the other just wouldn't work. EDIT: The last time Linux failed me was this. I was working on a pretty old PC with very less RAM, and wanted to play some movies on it. By default, movies just won't play, or even VLC played them very jerkily. In XP, I went to System properties and increased Cache size, and voila, all the movies were played effortlessly. I was using puppy linux too, as dual boot. No matter what, I just couldn't find the cache RAM to increase, and hence the movies never played smoothly This is just one example. That was the time that I stopped playing with Linux, and focused more on getting work done! Edited November 10, 2010 by ani_meher
