Phantom Flex camera slows down time, drops jaws with incredible 2,564fps slowmo footage

Ever wanted to see flowing water slowed down to the point of transforming into a series of airborne droplets? This video has that. And more. A chap by the name of Tom Guilmette got to work with a Vision Research Phantom Flex camera recently, and, being the true geek that he is, he put together a video composition of staggering slow-motion footage. When pushed to its limit, the Phantom is capable of filling every second of 1080p recording with 2,800 frames, though Tom mercifully ran it at a lower 2,564fps speed. That's still sufficient temporal resolution to let you track the wave of an impact's vibration as it travels up a BlackBerry's body -- oh yeah, it's as awesome as it sounds.

SteriShoe - Smelly Feet No More

Now Take Off Your Shoes With Pride

Picture this: you’re at your girlfriend’s house, meeting her parents for the first time. You’ve had a long day at work, and you’re hoping that they don’t ask you to take off your shoes. Why? Because your feet stink to high hell! Well, now there’s a solution to this problem. I just read that there’s a new foot smell-buster in town, and it’s called SteriShoe. It uses ultraviolet light to sterilise the bad bacteria that causes the stench from your smelly feet and has been developed by Shoe Care Innovations. This wondrous new gadget will definitely be a blessing in disguise for those with stinky feet.

img_300552_sterishoe_450x360.jpg

SteriShoe is basically a gadget that is placed inside the shoe and can kill bacteria which may cause athletes foot and other such diseases. Apparently, SteriShoe can kill 99.9% of bacteria in just 45 minutes. The use of ultraviolet seems to be a pretty good idea as it is also used in various other applications such as water treatment and dental surgeries.

SteriShoe is currently available in the UK at SteriShoe’s website at the price of £80 a pair. I hope this product comes to India soon, so I can gift it to some of my friends. They really need it!

World's First Water Powered Radio

Product Website http://www.waterpowerradio.com/

H20 announces eco-friendly shower powered radio

H20%20radio%20(small)-thumb-250x374-97117.jpg

Here's an interesting eco-friendly gadget - the world's first water-pressured radio.

Designed for use in the shower, the H2O Shower Powered Radio is powered solely through water, without the need for disposable batteries.

The FM radio is powered solely through the motion of water flowing through a small H2O™ micro turbine; driving a generator that creates energy to power the radio. An integral battery recharges as the shower runs.

The radio is both economically and environmentally friendly, harvesting energy that would otherwise, literally, go straight down the drain.

It simply connects to the shower hose and is compatible with 99 per cent of all showers.

Microsoft Kinect 'fastest-selling device on record'

Microsoft has sold more than 10 million Kinect sensor systems since launch on 4 November, and - according to Guinness World Records - is the fastest-selling consumer electronics device on record.

The sales figures outstrip those of both Apple's iPhone and iPad when launched, Guinness said.

Kinect is an infrared camera add-on for Microsoft's Xbox 360 games console that allows it to track body movements.

More than 10 million games have been sold worldwide to date, it added.

Gaz Davies, editor of Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer's Edition, said: "We can confirm that no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector."

Guinness World Records said that Microsoft sold eight million devices between 4 November last year and 3 January at an average rate of 133,333 a day.

Could recognize few products which are already there - surface glass, flexible LCD which can be rolled up and glass interface. Now need some sort of ecosystem vendor to integrate all these. Apple or MS?

A NEW washing machine that cleans clothes in just 12 MINUTES is set to be a chore-fire hit.

The "super rapid" program on the Russell Hobbs machine makes it nearly EIGHT times faster than the average 90-minute wash cycle.

It could save users two years and four months-worth of doing the washing over a lifetime.

A massive 212,415 gallons of water - enough to fill 17 swimming pools - will no longer be needed.

And household energy consumption could be cut by 30 per cent.

The £247 machines use a twin jet system that "injects" dirty washing with a water and detergent mix, speeding up the cleaning process. They can cope with a normal family wash and the program is unsuitable only for heavily soiled clothes such as greasy mechanic's overalls.

Three versions are going on sale at Asda.

And the store chain's Nicky Cox said: "This incredible range, currently the speediest in the land, will help families save time, energy and money."

No India version though.

Kohler's Numi $6,400 high-tech toilet does most of the dirty work for you

Engadget

numi-toilet-kohler-1302979261.jpg

We've seen some pretty fancy cans in our time, but perhaps none as tricked out as Kohler's latest $6,400 john. The Numi does just about everything for you, aside from the stuff that, well, only you can do. Looking something akin to a fancy pop-top waste bin, Numi comes complete with a self-opening and closing lid so you never have to touch the toilet seat; a self-cleaning bidet with adjustable controls for temperature and water pressure; heating elements to keep your toes and tush toasty; an illuminated panel for nighttime rendezvous; a built-in speaker system that connects to a remote docking station to ensure only you know exactly what you're doing in there; and a deodorizing element that s**ks air from the bowl through a charcoal filter. Of course, no connected appliance would be complete without a touchscreen, and the Numi's no exception; it has a touch panel remote that you can use to set to your specifications. Now, that's what we call a porcelain throne.

PicoHD5.1 - fully functioning media player that fits in your pocket

Includes 5.1 audio output, Full HD 1080p Output Source

crystal-acoustics-picohd5-1-tiny-media-player-0.jpg?20110419-163054

When you look at the spec list for the Crystal Acoustics PicoHD5.1 media player you certainly wouldn't believe that it's no bigger than an SD card reader. Or, indeed, smaller than its own remote control.

However, "pico" means small*, and that's exactly what it is. Tiny, in fact.

Indeed, there's just enough space on the device for a few inputs and outputs, including digital audio, HDMI, SD/MMC card slot and an USB port, and it is through this last one that you attach an external source as there's (clearly) no internal storage on board.

The PicoHD5.1 is compatible with all types of USB memory sticks and FAT, FAT32 or NTFS formatted external HDD drives. It can play a myriad of file types, including MKV, DivX, MP3, FLAC, JPG and BMP, and as it is recognises NTFS, files can be above 4GB in size (essential for 1080p MKVs, for example).

Its 5.1 suffix illustrates that, again seemingly in contradiction to its diminutive size, it can play full surround sound audio. But if you want to use it solely with a flatscreen TV, rather than AV amplifier, it is also capable of downmixing Dolby Digital and DTS audio soundtracks to a stereo mix.

The PicoHD5.1 costs £49.99 and is available now.

Google launches the closest thing to a real time machine

Google's new "GigaPan Time Machine" application, which lets you zoom in and out of a time-lapse video without losing resolution.

Google%20Time%20Machine.jpg

"With Time Machine, the cameras capture these image mosaics at regular intervals to create a video with hundreds of millions or even billions of pixels in each frame. The result is a video that viewers have the ability to zoom in on while it's playing and see incredible detail," Google wrote in a blog post (see video demo http://www.youtube.com/embed/Dk9WanUO_gg).

For example, Google links to a video of potted plants growing from seed to full bloom. You can target where you zoom in and out to focus on certain leaves or flowers (you may even be able to spot a catepillar taking a chomp of a leaf). The panorama was created by taking photos every 15 minutes for 26 days, using a Canon PowerShot G10 mounted on an Epic Pro.

The application, created by a team of researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, uses GigaPan photo technology, which involves "stitching" together high-resolution photos to create a panorama. You might have come across it while spying on people at President Obama's inauguration. It was also built using HTML 5, making it optimal to use with Chrome 7.0+, Google wrote. It works on Safari 5.0+ as well.

Check it out at GigaPan's website, where you can also create your own time-lapse videos using stock photos.

LG brings flicker-free Cinema 3D to Computer Monitors, Excel will never be the same

Source

4-26-2011lgcinema3dmonitors1.jpg

LG is bringing its Cinema 3D tech to computers with the new D41P and D42P families of monitors. The 1920 x 1080 displays range in size from 21.5-inches to 25-inches and feature the company's FPR (Film Pattern Retarder) coating that ditches the heavy active shutter glasses used by many other manufacturers for the lighter passive variety. Both monitors also sport a 5ms response time, an HDMI 1.4 port, and a 2D conversion feature -- perfect for whipping up Word docs in eye-popping 3D. Pricing is still up in the air, but the D41P and D42P lines are available in South Korea now and a global rollout will begin in June, with Europe next in line for some flicker-free 3D fun.

Press Release:

LG Opens New Era Of 3D Monitors With Brightest, Most Comfortable 3D Viewing

SEOUL--(Korea Newswire) April 26, 2011 -- LG Electronics (LG) today announced the release of two CIN-EMA 3D Monitors –D41P and D42P – equipped with LG's new Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D technology. With FPR 3D technology, the monitors offer a brighter display, clearer images, and a "Flicker-Free" certified 3D picture that makes 3D viewing more comfortable.

"Although 3D is one of the hottest items in technology today, some consumers are holding back from purchasing 3D products because of concerns over performance and price," said Si-hwan Park, Vice President of the Monitor Division, LG Home Entertainment Company. "With CINEMA 3D Monitors, we've addressed all these concerns. The advanced picture quality, more comfortable glasses and competitive pricing makes it very hard to keep put-ting off 3D."

The monitors' "Flicker-Free" certification, shared with LG's CINEMA 3D TVs, was awarded by TÜV and Intertek, two of Europe's top safety certification agencies. The certi-fication recognizes that LG's CINEMA 3D Monitors have largely eradicated onscreen flicker, which had occasionally caused dizziness and nausea among viewers watching conventional 3D displays. With CINEMA 3D Monitors, viewers are now able to watch 3D content for longer periods in greater comfort.

Thanks to LG's FPR technology, LG CINEMA 3D Monitors also provide clearer, brighter 3D images and lower crosstalk, meaning less eyestrain. In contrast with conventional 3D glasses, LG CINEMA 3D glasses are lightweight and entirely free of electrical parts, so and the glasses are lighter – thus more comfortable – and they never need to be recharged.

LG CINEMA 3D Monitors also boast great compatibility. The monitors work with all graphic cards and are compatible with popular home PC operating systems. They support HDMI 1.4 for easy hook-up with other 3D devices, making it possible to play 3D content without a PC. Also, a 2D to 3D conversion function converts regular content into top-quality 3D on the fly, so viewers will never be short of 3D content to enjoy.

In addition, a recent detailed survey conducted in five markets by Research Company TNS found that 77 percent of respondents expressed a preference for FPR type 3D monitor based on image quality, comfort and convenience of glasses. The survey involved blind testing after the product demonstration of almost 230 consumers across both Shutter Glass (SG) type and FPR type 3D monitor with respondents viewing a series of 3D video clips on each screen.

The LG Cinema 3D Monitor will be launched in Korea today and will be rolled out globally early June starting in Europe.

Samsung intros foldable AMOLED displays that don't crease

Samsung had showed off its flexible displays at CES 2011, but now, Samsung’s Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) has revealed something better – flexible, foldable screens that will never show a visible crease along the fold line. To prove this, researchers performed a test that folded/unfolded the display 100,000 times, with no apparent effect observable to the human eye, apart from a negligible 6% decrease in brightness along the junction.

Using nothing fancier than regular and readily-available hyper-elastic silicone rubber, Samsung’s prototype foldable display also had a glass cover along with it, which would act like the touchscreen, and a protective layer. If you were wondering just how much the display could be folded, the official closing radius is just a millimetre – with the two ends almost touching.

Many companies, big and small, have shown off their flexible displays, most of which can bend, extend, or be rolled. However, foldable screens were usually avoided because of the inherent creasing problem, one that now appears to have had a very simple solution.

Speaking about how the whole set up works, HongShik Shim, one of the lead researchers from the team at SAIT, said: “All the materials in a foldable window unit (glasses and silicone rubber) must have almost the same optical properties and attach to each other strongly without any optical property change.”

Lockitron - Keyless entry for your house

Lockitron takes security to a whole new level. It takes the world to a place without keys. Lockitron by Apigy aims to replace physical keys entirely by letting you control your door lock with your phone. The Lockitron web app and hardware package are as of today available for general users, for a one-time fees of $295 to $500.

The technology uses a plug server and an Ethernet cable tied to a lock. Your phone controls the lock by talking to the server using an internet connection. It also features NFC option (Near Field Communication) that makes it even more desirable once NFC is finally floated. The main advantage is not the absence of traditional keys but the data being encrypted and stored on the cloud. This makes it all the more tempting to the geeks as you can mail the keys around to your friends and do not need to worry about being waited for at the door.

Co-Founder Paul Gerhardt says, “I wanted to be able to email a key or text a key to somebody else, the technology was there, it just needed a good experience on top of it.”

Apigy doesn’t want to be seen as a security company but has a lot on its mind other than locks. “At the end of the day we just want to make sure that there’s one less thing in your pocket,” Gerhardt said.
