Seagate's GoFlex Satellite HDD streams content over the air

Seagate's GoFlex Satellite is part storage device, part wireless media streamer, and it manages to wear both hats with little compromise on either end. For all intents and purposes, this is a standard 500GB GoFlex HDD with a bit of extra girth, an AC input, an 802.11b/g/n WiFi module and a built-in web server. The reason for those extras? A simple depression of the on / off button starts the streamer up, and it's ready for a connection in around 30 to 40 seconds. Once fired up you can stream data to just about anything -- even iOS devices.

The unit is shipped with a GoFlex USB 3.0 adapter and a car charger. Installation is a cinch; just fire up a media sync application that resides on the drive (for OS X users, anyway), and you're ready to drag and drop files as if it's any 'ole HDD. No media management software or anything of the sort, thankfully. The purpose of having your media onboard is to stream videos, photos, documents and music to your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or any other tablet, phone or laptop with WiFi. You heard right -- while there's only a dedicated app for the iOS family, any WiFi-enabled device with a web browser can tap into this.

Dell XPS 15z, the thinnest 15-inch laptop in the world, expected in India soon

Dell has launched the XPS 15z, supposedly the thinnest 15-inch laptop on the planet – measuring 0.97-inches at its thickest point. The all-aluminium and magnesium alloy XPS 15z has only been launched in U.S. so far, but is expected in India soon. Starting from $999 on the Dell US site, it should be around Rs 50,000 when in lands in India, a whole lot lower than its slightly more powerful aesthetic inspiration – the 15-inch MacBook Pro. The laptop is first in line of the rugged slim 'z' series of Inspiron and XPS laptops.

Shipping with Windows 7 Home Premium on board, the Dell XPS 15z can be purchased with an optional 15.6-inch full HD (1920x1080) monitor instead of its regular 1366x768 one. Configuration options include an Intel i5 2410M 2.3 GHz or i7 2620M 2.7 GHz dual core processor, 6 to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 750GB of HDD space, and 1GB or 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 525M graphics. Battery life is rated at more than 8 hours, with its standard 8-cell battery pack.

Other features include a gesture optimized multi-touchpad, Intel Wi-Di, Bluetooth 3.0, a backlit spill-resistant keyboard, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 9-in-1 card reader, HDMI 1.4 and Mini DisplayPort, a DVD writer, an integrated 1.3MP webcam, coupled with dual-array digital microphones and stereo speakers. Nvidia’s Kal-El line of mobile processors, or Tegra 3, is expected to launch later this year, promising a quad-core CPU and 12-core GPU for tablets and mobile phones. With such massive processing power on its side, it is not surprise that Nvidia expects the Tegra 3 processor to outperform Tegra 2 by 5 times! To be precise, they expect it do outperform Intel’s not-so-ancient Core2Duo desktop processor.

While we expect a lot more details from Nvidia at Computex, for now, the green giant has released a performance demonstration video showing the Kal-El Tegra 3 processor handling real-time dynamic lighting effects, something that no other chipset in the market, even the iPad 2’s graphics, can offer.

The demo shows you what the Tegra 3 can manage with a quad-core CPU and 12-core GPU, and, a portion of it even shows you how it would render with just the two cores and GPU of the Tegra 2 – a stark difference that will make you reconsider purchasing a Tegra 2 bearing Android Honeycomb tablet, or any other tablet for that matter before Tegra 3 releases.

Of course, for now, no real graphically-intensive games are even available for the Android platform – Nvidia is quick to point out that many are on their way.

For flight passengers who battle with the feeling of being penned into aircraft cabins with little natural daylight, aviation designers may have found the perfect solution...a plane that is transparent.

The futuristic concept for travel in 40 years' time was yesterday unveiled in London by Airbus.The planes of 2050 could, the company says, involve aircraft with 'intelligent' cabin wall membranes and interactive games.

First, business and economy cabins are replaced by zones for relaxation in the front, work in the back, and a fully-stocked bar for socialising.

Passengers will be able to see everything to the sides and in front of them. So blindfolds might be handy come take-off and landing time.

The aircraft's walls change according to light conditions. There are holographic pop-up gaming displays and in-flight entertainment powered by the heat of passengers' bodies.

The technology could mean travellers might even be able to read bedtime stories to their children back home.

Most of the basic technology such as moulding seats and 'head-up displays' already exist, but how Airbus plan to make the plant-based, transparent 'skin' of the plane remains a mystery.

The concept cabin would be a bionic structure that 'mimics' the efficiency of bird bone, claim Airbus.

It would provide strength where needed, and also allows for an 'intelligent' cabin wall membrane which controls air temperature and can become transparent to give passengers open, panoramic views.

Airbus believes that mid-century passengers might be able to enjoy a game of virtual golf or take part in interactive conferences, while the cabin 'identifies and responds' to travellers’ needs.

The cabin of the future follows last year’s unveiling of the Airbus concept plane, packed with technologies to reduce fuel burn, emissions, waste and noise.

In the cabin concept, the 'vitalising zone' helps passengers relax, with vitamin and antioxidant-enriched air, mood lighting, aromatherapy and acupressure treatments.

In the 'interactive zone' there are virtual pop-up projections taking passengers to whichever social scene they want to be in, from holographic gaming to virtual changing rooms for active shoppers.

It aims to meet individual needs ranging from a simple to a complete luxury service, but all allowing you to continue life as if on the ground'.

Airbus engineering executive vice-president Charles Champion said: 'Our research shows that passengers of 2050 will expect a seamless travel experience while also caring for the environment.

'The concept cabin is designed with that in mind, and shows that the journey can be as much a voyage of discovery as the destination.'

We have already seen attempts to develop an electric car (e.g. Reva), but this is the first electric car which looks like a real car. Nissan claims the top speed of car is 90 mph and it has a maximum range of 100 miles with fully charged batteries. It is excellent for city rides. It is currently subsidized by US Federal Govt (7500$).

Nissan is giving a charger (or inverter) which can be easily plugged into any 110v or 240v plug. The charging time varies accordingly. Nissan is also coming up with fast charging stations across cities in US. These charging stations can charge the battery to 80% level in just 25 minutes. It is truly zero emission car. However, its biggest limitation is range. There are alternative electric car available in market like Chevy Volt, which have either a electricity generator running on petrol or diesel. These hybrid cars have extended range.

It is debatable if it is a real alternative to tackle energy crisis. But, it seems the electric drives is flavor of season for all the manufactures. GM has already launched Chevy Volt. Volkswagen, Ford and other manufactures are catching with their upcoming models in 2012. This concept is going to stay around for now.

We hope to see one of these cars in India by 2013. BTW, Govt. of India has declared a subsidy of upto Rs 1 lakhs for four wheeler electric driven vehicles.

What is the light field?

The light field is a core concept in imaging science, representing fundamentally more powerful data than in regular photographs. The light field fully defines how a scene appears. It is the amount of light traveling in every direction through every point in space – it’s all the light rays in a scene. Conventional cameras cannot record the light field.

How does a light field camera capture the light rays?

Recording light fields requires an innovative, entirely new kind of sensor called a light field sensor. The light field sensor captures the color, intensity and vector direction of the rays of light. This directional information is completely lost with traditional camera sensors, which simply add up all the light rays and record them as a single amount of light.

How do light field cameras make use of the additional information?

By substituting powerful software for many of the internal parts of regular cameras, light field processing introduces new capabilities that were never before possible. Sophisticated algorithms use the full light field to unleash new ways to make and view pictures.

OmniTouch Projection Interface Makes The World Your Touchscreen (video)

Sometimes you just want to make notes on your forearm. Put that permanent marker down though, because PhD student Chris Harrison et al at Microsoft Research have created a new system that allows touchscreen interaction on hairy and uneven surfaces. It uses a short-range depth camera instead of the infrared sensor we've seen on similar devices, which allows it to gauge the viewing angle and other characteristics of surfaces being used -- and it can even handle pinch-to-zoom. There's a video, if you fancy a bit of wall-based digital finger painting.

Norwegian developers have created one of the world's smallest computers on a USB stick.

The device, dubbed "Cotton Candy", allows users to turn any screen on a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone into a terminal that accesses the USB's operating system, cloud services and apps.

The USB - weighing 21 grams, about the weight of a bag of fairy floss - would also work with television sets, set-top boxes and games consoles, the company, FXI Technologies, said.

"We've turned things upside down, eliminating the screen and delivering the power of a PC and the web to any screen," FXI Technologies's founder and chief executive Borgar Ljosland said.

The tiny device, which uses Google's Android operating system and is expected to retail for about $US200 in the middle of next year, has been touted as a way for the search engine giant to get Android on a wider range of electronic devices beyond the smartphone and tablet.

"From TVs to car stereo head units to refrigerators and lighting fixtures, it seems no piece of consumer electronics is out of Android's reach," Wired magazine wrote.

"And, ultimately, getting Android on as many devices as possible gets Google's search bar and services on to multitudinous screens beyond the desktop environment. This potentially means more ads served, and more revenue for the search company's core business."

The specs, as supplied by FXI Technologies:

ARM® Cortex-A9 (1.2GHz) CPU, an ARM Mali-400 MP (Quad-core) GPU, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, HDMI output and the Android operating system.

The USB decodes MPEG-4, H.264 and other video formats and display HD graphics on any HDMI equipped screen.

Acer Unveils the Thinnest Ultrabook, a 15" Ultrabook, a 1080p Tablet and AcerCloud

It technically doesn't start for another day, but CES is in full swing in Las Vegas. As part of the fun, Acer is bringing us the thinnest Ultrabook yet: The Aspire S5. This 13.3" class laptop measures just 15 mm at its thickest point and weighs in at under 3 lbs. Specs get thin from there, the Intel Core processor, SSD and sealed battery are a given; what we don't know is the size of the battery nor the price or release date, though Q2 2012 is promised. What draws our eye more than the thinness lies beneath what's being called a "MagicFlip I/O" port panel. In an homage to the original MacBook Air, Acer is including a concealed panel for connectivity beneath the display hinge. Where the original MBA, though, made do with a single USB port, the Aspire S5 features HDMI, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt, a first for a non-Apple laptop. Rated at 20 Gbps, the Thunderbolt port could be driven by Intel's Eagle Ridge chip, or it could be a newer Cactus Ridgepart we'd been waiting to encounter. We'll be sure to report in when we get our hands on one.

Acer's mainstream Timeline family of laptops are getting thinner and lighter than ever before. Tacking the Ultra modifier to their name is not just a marketing ploy, these 14" and 15" laptops measure just 20 mm thick, promise an 8 hour battery life and even manage to squeeze in an optical drive. The chassis is attractive and roomy enough for a full sized number pad on the 15" model. As with the Aspire S5, details are slim at the moment, we do know that an SSD/HDD storage option will be available and a Q1 2012 ship date is promised.

There is no shortage of online lockers to store files in the cloud. That's not stopping Acer from developing an integrated solution for all of its products. Called AcerCloud, the new service promises seamless access of files stored either on remote devices or in the cloud. This fuses the concept of the 'personal cloud' and cloud storage in general, and mimics offerings like Motorola's MotoCast and DropBox. Services are a different beast than consumer products, and execution is key. Data loss or service interruption can be costly, and it will be interesting to see how Acer performs in this new role. AcerCloud will be featured on all Acer consumer PCs starting in Q2 2012 and the software will be compatible with all Android phones and tablets, with plans for a Windows Phone version at a later date.

Speaking of tablets, Acer teased though they did not formally announce their latest tablet, the Acer Iconia Tab A700. Thoroughly leaked late last year, the new slate is no less surprising for its 1920 x 1080 10.1" display, the first of what we expect to be several such Android tablets. Though nowhere near Retina Display caliber, the 218 ppi pixel density easily bests other Android tablets. Powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 3 quad-core SoC, clocked at 1.3 GHz, and running Android 4.0, the tablet should give stark competition to Asus Transformer Prime. We'll have to wait to sometime in Q2 2012 to see who comes out on top.

CES 2012: Lenovo's Yoga Ultrabook is aptly named

At last year's Consumer Electronics Show virtually every name brand computer company offered a tablet. That's pretty much the story at this year's event. But now much of the focus is on the ultrabook computers that started hitting stores less than four months ago. Chip giant Intel, the ultraforce behind ultrabooks, says more than 75 ultrabook designs are in the pipeline for 2012, on top of the 15 models already in the market.

Among those that stood out to me among the 25 to 30 ultrabooks shown at CES — and models are here from Acer, Asus, HP, LG, Toshiba and Samsung — is the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga.

On the one hand Yoga is a 3.1-pound Windows 8 ultrabook with a high-definition 13.3-inch display. But it has a 360-degree dual hinge "flip and fold" design that lets you convert the machine into a tablet, and is the reason for its apt name.

Yoga has four different usage modes: You can rest it flat like any notebook. You can carry it in your hand like any tablet. You can prop it up as a stand. Or you can fold it so that it is in a tent position, useful, say, if you're reading or watching a video.

In tablet mode Yoga felt a little odd to me because of the exposed keyboard on the bottom. You need not worry though about making something go haywire on the screen should you press those keys accidentally, since they're deactivated in that mode, and I suspect you would get used to it fairly quickly.

Yoga is expected out during the second half of the year at a starting price of $1,199.

A new technology that could save your phone from getting water damaged could be included the next wave of smartphones about to be made by Samsung and Apple.

Called HZO, the technology creates a nano-scale film barrier which has special water repelling properties once applied to the inside of electronic gadgets.

Done during the manufacturing process rather than by you once you've bought your phone, this isn't a clumsy case or a sealant but a way of protecting gadgets from getting wet.

To help show off the capabilities of the technology, the company has already applied the tech to a number of different devices like the iPhone, as well as other phones from Samsung and Motorola. At this year's CES in Las Vegas Pocket-lint witnessed what looked like an ordinary iPhone being repeatedly dunked into a fish tank full of water.

The company is hoping to sign big deals with all leading manufacturers. A spokesman for the company told Pocket-lint that it is in the process of signing up a major smartphone partner and a headphones maker in the very near future.

The plan for headphones is that they wouldn't be damaged by sweat when running or water when swimming.

"We showed the Samsung Chairman the technology with a Samsung Galaxy S that we had coated with HZO and he couldn't believe his eyes," a representative of the company told us. "Samsung is really excited by the tech."

The company has told us that they are also talking to Apple as well, hoping to be able to let Apple make the iPhone 5 waterproof.

"We expect HZO to be in next season's phones," HZO told Pocket-lint rather confidently.

Who stopped you from doing the honours?

Coming to your question, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Nexus both use Pentile Display Technology, So similar in that aspect. Other difference is PPI (pixel density in pixels per inch). Note has 285 and Galaxy Nexus 316. So theoretically it can be said that Nexus will be better in readability. Practically with a PPI of only 256 on EVO 3D, i have absolutely no issue in readability and it's crystal clear.

However Pentile Technology is different from conventional LCD. It offers better power saving but may result in (now proven to be more of a perception than hard reality) grainy screens.
